off topic, there's an ad for Malaysia Airline on here where they have just got some producer and singer to record a terrible clone of 'Pure Shores' because this is cheaper than using the real 'Pure SHores' - i wish there was a law against this cos i just find it really annoying - also happened with Deee-Lite's 'Groove Is In The Heart' on a car ad last year

I tend to use "dated" when I feel something was relevent at its release but I've missed the boat so to speak, like Massive Attack or something, I'm sure people who were there really like them but to me they just feel redundant. It's not really a logical thing.

I don't think the soundtrack is dated, I just think there's a few crap songs on it, I think the "this is music for execs" thing is a pathetically easy mould to put an album with "pure shores" which was from a film called "the beach" which had a cool oceanic video in it. I mean use other idle slurs cos that one is so hackneyed.

I thought dated meant that you can tell when it came out just by listening to it.

"dated" heavily implies "irrelevant" and "useless".

does no one else like the film?
there's a few cringe inducing bits, but overall i really like it...

"dated" means we went out once, NOTHING MORE I SWEAR!

I liked the book quite a bit, I didn't see the film. What Chemical Brothers song is on the soundtrack?

It was okay right up to the point where Leo started charging around like a videogame character. I then was too busy wishing I could slap the director to enjoy the rest of the movie.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 13 February 2003 18:56 (twenty-one years ago) link

also the Underworld track on it '8 Ball' is fantastic, but then i would say that...

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 13 February 2003 20:50 (twenty-one years ago) link

the videogame sequence was probably a mistake because it takes things out of context and makes something of a mockery out of what suspense and mood was being built up to that point by Leo going all schizo and the drug barons killing the new arrivals - but conceptually i think a sequence like that could work really well in another instance e.g. a film with an overall surreal feel

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 13 February 2003 20:52 (twenty-one years ago) link

Exactly! It was so out-of-place with the rest of the movie that I lost the desire to take the rest of the film seriously after that.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 13 February 2003 20:54 (twenty-one years ago) link

Dan if we collectively made "manufactured" safe for ILM we can do the same with "dated"!

Haha touche!
