were these bands worse than the 2nd & 3rd rate britpop bands of the 90s?

Yeah come on, Cast and Shed Seven and Kula Shaker and the like had too many hilarious self-clowning moments. They were shit but I was glad they existed.

Rooster's debut single, "Come Get Some," reached the Top 10 in the UK Singles Chart in November 2004. Live shows saw the band improvising and extending songs; Neale often performed a four-minute-long drum solo during "Drag The Sunrise Down." Rooster were known to incorporate covers, such as, Cream's "Sunshine of Your Love," Free's "All Right Now," Jamiroquai's "Deeper Underground," Blackstreet's "No Diggity" and The Rolling Stone's "Satisfaction" into their live sets.

I bet that cover of No Diggity was... something.

Mark G, Thursday, 17 February 2011 16:28 (thirteen years ago) link

'she's so luvverly' isn't even the worst SFG song, of the two i can remember. that one that got to #1 was even worse.

actually i withdraw this comment. the #1 is just blander. you could probably ignore it, despite the stakeriness.

xp

lol i was going to mention rooster earlier but somehow had em pegged as a bustedwave tween act?

Can't judge tbh. Last random 2nd-tierer i heard was Great Things by Echobelly, about a week ago. Sounded fine, cheered me a little to hear it but I am of that age now yknow. + at least there were some women were in the britpop bands.

there's an American country song about reality TV stars etc. that reminds me of that SFG track but I'm luckily having trouble remembering the title or performer.

Say what you like about 2011's music scene but at least we only have one Mumford & Sons whereas from 2005-2008 at least half of these would be in the charts at any one time.

Powder, though they may be 5th rate. Northern Uproar? Ocean Colour Scene?

THE FRATELLIS - 30/10 - Chelsea Dagger might be the worst thing that any of these bands have put out

OTM. Ubiquity is a strong factor here - everyone stopped caring about The Enemy etc. very quickly, but The Fratelli pollution lingers.

Northern Uproar made a couple of singles, I bought one, can't remember it.

listening to the hoosiers, im thinking, why the fuck did i not form a band? could've been making serious scrilla if i'd spent just half my ilx time on trying to sound like these muppets.

Why i could never go to a big football match in scotland ever again. One of many reasons to avoid Hampden internationals is that they play this after goals and before and after the games.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Thursday, 17 February 2011 16:38 (thirteen years ago) link

Singles from 'Drink Me' were fab, can't remember the album. It's on spotify so will have to check it out in the name of research.

last.fm played "Drink the Elixir" at me just today! I still kinda like it. And still refuse to acknowledge that they had any other songs. (Did they?)

Similarly for Silver Sun and "Lava", except last.fm has never played that at me, I just get drunk enough to youtube it sometimes. (Don't actually watch the video tho, or they'll seem as punchable as everyone on this list.)

Who was the band responsible for that "what's that coming over the hill is it a monster?" song? That is one vile inescapable song almost as bad as that fratellis/dodgy/toploader shit

Algerian Goalkeeper, Thursday, 17 February 2011 16:40 (thirteen years ago) link

Toploader - I can't imagine any of these other bands causing my bile to rise so quickly just at the mention of their name 12 years after their biggest hit.

Les centimètres énigmatiques (snoball), Thursday, 17 February 2011 16:40 (thirteen years ago) link

I think there may need to be a separate thread for 'unusual details from wikipedia' about all these bands. Thus for the Fratellis:

They played their first show on 4 March 2005 in the O'Henry's bar in Glasgow across the road from the famous Horseshoe bar.

...

Mince has joined a heavy metal band called Throne o' Diablo and is regularly performing with them and recording material

Right then. I'm going to make every effort to find redeeming features. If I find one, they're out.

athlete - Genuinely liked the third album, plus one of them gave me an excellent interview.

babyshambles - CONTENDERS
biffy clyro - CONTENDERS

florence and the machine - Good XX remix of "You Got The Love". Hate everything else she's done, and not remotely convinced by her live show. I'm not a big one for actual HATING, but I absolutely HATE this. CONTENDERS.

hard-fi - LOVE "Hard To Beat".
hundred reasons - never heard

joe lean and the jing jang jong - Redeemed by comedy value/so-bad-it's-entertaining-ness, but they are quite possibly the worst band of the 2000s. Then again, good drummer. Could never understand why he stuck with them.

kaiser chiefs - I've seen them live. They entertained, after a fashion. But then again, HATE HATE HATE "Ruby" beyond all reason. CONTENDERS.

kasabian - Quite liked "Empire" and "Fire".

keane - Actually LOVE a couple of their singles.

mumford and sons - I've moved from indifference to HATE in the past few weeks. Not sure how much of it is their fault, as opposed to what they have come to represent, which is largely out of their control.

noah and the whale - Don't mind them in small doses.

pigeon detectives - Accidentally saw them at a festival, didn't hate them. They were last minute stand-ins, playing to the wrong crowd, but they did an OK job in winning people over.

razorlight - There was one song that I didn't mind. Ludicrous front man, obv.

scouting for girls - I once spent an evening "hanging out" with the singer. He was thoroughly pleasant company, so I can't hate.

snow patrol - Grudging respect, up to a point. They shouldn't be on here, though. HELLO, THEY ARE IRISH.

starsailor - Indifference rather than hate.
the courteeners - never heard
the cribs - See Starsailor.
the enemy - never heard

the feeling - Moderately fond. Actually very enjoyable live. Fancied Dan something rotten.

the fratellis - I *like* "Chelsea Dagger"!

the futureheads - Started great, got boring. But they *were* great, for a while.

the hoosiers - I can live with them. My nieces loved them, and so I associate them with happy family gatherings.

the kooks - Awful, but the guitarist has his moments. See also: drummer out of the Jing Jang Jong.

the magic numbers - Car-crash of a live show, just over a year ago. Really took a dislike to Romeo. But the odd serviceable tune, for all that.

the ordinary boys - Quite fun live. Phill Jupitus sang "Boys Will Be Boys". Then BB happened. Almost contenders, but not quite.

the others - Utterly utterly shit, but commercial failures, so they have been punished enough.

the rakes - never heard
the stereophonics - HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE. But I think of them more of a 90s band.
the twang - never heard

the view - Quiet liked the one about jeans.
the wombats - never heard
the zutons - dull dull dull, almost contenders, but others are more deserving.

toploader - Our former next door neighbours' daughter's boyfriend ran the studio where they tried (and failed) to follow up the first album. So we are like brothers, really. It wouldn't be fair.

Contenders: Babyshambles, Biffy Clyro, Florence & the Machine, Kaiser Chiefs.

Voting for... BABYSHAMBLES!

Most of the female-fronted Britpop bands were at least passable though, except Sleeper obviously.

That Automatic song has at least inspired some good football chants, especially one particularly delightful one for Steven Gerrard.

surprised that this shit is played at football matches coz it all seems kind of studenty to me? is this a symptom of 'football's hijack by the middle classes'?

I dunno, one thing that's apparent when you look at this list is the interchangeability of most of the singers.

In one word, yes. But in several words, also the upper working classification of this strain of landfill indie from Britpop on.

^^ & second album was unjustly ignored. The Futureheads: secretly the best of the early-to-mid 00s post-punk revivalists.
