saw them a couple yrs ago and was blown away. the new one is so good

am0n, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 15:24 (thirteen years ago) link

yes it is

there's more rhythm and less all-out attack than on their other studio one, but it's still ~~intense~~

Jari Litmandem (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 16 February 2011 15:43 (thirteen years ago) link

Psychic Paramount is making my day, thanks!

Trip Maker, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 15:45 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah, this is really good!

btw don't sleep on the origins + primitives collection from a few years back, people. a more mellow, stripped down take on the formula. lots of achim reichel/manuel gottsching delay pedal action. love it!

original bgm, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 19:49 (thirteen years ago) link

have now listened to new eternal tapestry in full twice. like it a lot and I was never impressed by these guys before.

Peaking Lights "936" blew me away on the first listen. Reminds me of a poppier Blues Control. Very Kosmiche. Sun Araw fans might wanna check it out, too.

International Waters, Monday, 21 February 2011 01:40 (thirteen years ago) link

Their earlier stuff is much much better. I did not like the new one at all.

van smack, Monday, 21 February 2011 01:45 (thirteen years ago) link

This is the first one I've heard.

International Waters, Monday, 21 February 2011 01:59 (thirteen years ago) link

I blind bought the new Peaking Lights based on past quality. Kind of worried it will be too poppy/formless/chillwave tribal. Earlier shit was noisy/murky/more menacing.

Badmotorfinger Debate Club (MFB), Tuesday, 22 February 2011 04:41 (thirteen years ago) link

old and new minimalist-drone from pauline oliveros, eliane radigue, yoshi wada, and sun circle:

http://brainwashed.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=8578:pauline-oliveroseliane-radigueyoshi-wadasun-circle-qattention-patternsq&catid=13:albums-and-singles&Itemid=96

the yoshi wada is great, it's like a twenty-minute sustained high note on a bagpipe. oh wait, ten minutes in suddenly something happened. now it's kind of… woobering. woovering.

i'm having the same reaction. wasn't that blown away by them before; this new one though's reminding me of the less synthy aspects of harmonia's deluxe

reggie (qualmsley), Monday, 28 February 2011 14:32 (thirteen years ago) link

Maybe the new Peaking Lights is hitting me like it's chillwave for people who hate chillwave. I'm enjoying the lack of menace, even though some of those basslines are still awful heavy. I dunno, it's been taking me "there" all week, though. It also led me back to Blue Control's "Local Flavor", which sounded great in the car this week during Atlanta's way premature springtime.

International Waters, Monday, 28 February 2011 15:13 (thirteen years ago) link

Psychic Paramount II is relentless. Like I gotta get some air after listening to it straight through. This Heat guitars with a drummer who sounds like he's auditioning for Mahavishnu Orchestra.

Would The Skull Defekts belong to this thread? Their new release Peer Amid has set my world on fire. I am investing in their other albums for starters.

I really really really really really really really really like that Motion Sickness of Time Travel EP, definitely one of my favorite records of the year so far.

The Land Berore Time (jamescobo), Monday, 28 February 2011 22:44 (thirteen years ago) link

also mad props to Brad at Digitalis for literally tracking my lost copy down and bribing some dude in Alabama to send it my way

The Land Berore Time (jamescobo), Monday, 28 February 2011 22:44 (thirteen years ago) link

Blues Control Local Flavor kind of casting a shadow over all related scenes. That's a monster right there. My TT has been broke down for about a month but I just got a new one, literally, tonight and may set it up and dig into some stuff discussed here that I've missed (Motion Sickness of Time Travel, Peaking Lights). Already a pretty great year.

I guess this is the spot to mention that I saw Samara Lubelski/Marcia Bassett duo last week and it was very good, all kinds of noisy/harsh but v. hypnotic. Tom Carter/Marc Orleans new duo played as well, tore the place up. Pete Nolan was supposed to be on drums but canceled, didn't recognize the drummer. First jam was tentative but solid, second one was out of control. I think they have a record coming out eventually on Northern Spy. Pretty psyched for that one possibly.

Badmotorfinger Debate Club (MFB), Tuesday, 1 March 2011 01:39 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah, blues control are definitely a fave of mine. I like that they don't flood the market like a lot of these bands too... but I could use some new blues control already.

I want to hear that Skull Defekts joint. I'm kinda surprised how much stuff comes out on Thrill Jockey(and Kranky) these days that are things I'd be into. If you woulda told me that 10 years ago, I'd have thought you were nuts.

i know you guys were talking about the Psychic Paramount album a while ago but it's so fucking good. like right in my wheelhouse.

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 3 March 2011 22:57 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah it's rad! it's funny, when the "post-rock" thing was big in the late 90s i couldn't really stand most of it -- but you introduce a some psychedelia into the mix and it's like my favorite thing.

tylerw, Thursday, 3 March 2011 23:00 (thirteen years ago) link

Did a search and it looks like last year's Big Blood album, Dead Songs, didn't get a mention in last year's thread (I'm just getting around to hearing it myself) so I'll call your attention to it now. It's their first "proper" full-length after a long series of self-released cdrs and it's magnificent. If you don't know, Big Blood is Caleb and Colleen from Cerberus Shoal (and many related projects) and they kick ass.

Here's a fan made video for "Dead Song" (probably NSFW - boobies are bared):

I saw Woodsman last night. Drumming was absolutely top notch, tho guitar was a lil lackluster. Two dudes and no bass player, and it was just a lot of drone w/ spacey effects.

The taller guitar player was a real nice dude tho.. conversationally, I just asked how much their LPs were going for and he goes $12.50. I wasn't planning on buying one but I go "Bummer, I only $5" (I really only do) and dude hooks me up anyway. It's pretty rad so far, playing it as I type this.

j., Wednesday, 29 June 2011 23:39 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, the new pulse emitter tape is really something. Was listening to an older cd-r and it was pleasant but the difference between that an the newer material is pretty night and day. Excess fat has been trimmed, the tempos have slowed, and it all just feels much less improvised and I couldn't be happier
. Every sound just where it should be.

You're right though, the prices have gone slightly daft too. Last time I saw Bardo Pond here, there was only a handful of folks. Guessing it might be less this time what with the Finnish competition. Have no idea what sort of a following they have in the UK these days though.

Circle is the obvious choice there IMO. Not really a tough decision at all.

Bardo Pons was completely amazing live last time I saw them, unfortunately that was 1999, so I can't speak as to the last ten years.

Speaking of stuff that's really old, here's The Roswell Incident (me and Elvis Telecom, live samples from Mr. Mackro and a couple guests.)

http://theroswellincident.bandcamp.com/

Recorded in 1996. There may be some more forthcoming. Mostly put this up on as a lark.

No, I haven't been around in awhile. I'll see if I can fix that.

This new Locrian record - is the first song supposed to be 8 minutes of fierce hiss or is it just a Spotify glitch?

Lars and the Lulu Girl (NickB), Tuesday, 8 November 2011 11:43 (twelve years ago) link

Must be a Spotify fail. There's a lot of intentional hiss on the other three tracks but not much on the first one. Just lots of guitar, drums and chanting, suitable to conjure the deity of your choice.
