(also totally off-topic but would i be right in guessing that that kandi album for the r&b thread a month ago is proving tricky to errm, procure for preview purposes? i can sort that out too.)

Enjoyed Carnao the other night on Deja Vu: http://www.youtube.com/user/carnaoBEATS

no i got my hands on that kandi album, i remember really liking the first track and wanting to give the rest anothe chance but never really got around to it. i think i have to be in the right mindset to put on such a grown-ass record; the craft was there but i think i just wasn't in the mood for that style at that time

err, marcus' on a heavy sunday roast rotation, right? the 'dark undergorund' ep was mostly forgettable, but, dunno, maybe in the context of a dj set it can prove to be more interesting.

that set with shantie & ranking will be my first 2011 marcus set. is the rinse fm site still indecisive?

kinda enjoyed the signal mix. disappointed with 'in control' by screama & farah.

rusty_allen, Tuesday, 8 February 2011 16:16 (thirteen years ago) link

oh i don't know about that, it's kinda cute? farah being able to do a scarily spot-on kid sister impression is a thing i did not know before at any rate.

r|t|c, Tuesday, 8 February 2011 23:18 (thirteen years ago) link

Listened to the first few tracks of the Marcus/Rankin set on the way to work:

Screama ft Phe Phe - Never Say Bye - all time classic obv
GTE ft Kelsey - Something On Your Mind - this is A++!
?? [this old chestnut] - have a feeling this is either Marcus/Bassboy or Madfingers?

Thinking about Sunday Roast vs Dubplate Wonder 2009 (see r|t|c's comparison upthread) - diff. with DW may be how thoroughly (but subtly) he has absorbed that sort of 2-step/r&b groove logic where the groove really wraps itself around the vocals, it makes the percussion and basslines much more thrilling (in the sense of there being something at stake in the choice to place the snare here rather than there) than in SR's straight tribal-into-deep-house "rollers". Whereas Dubplate Wonder is (was? what's dude up to) "deep" in the same way that The Dreem Teem were deep at the end of 2007.

Pretty sure r|t|c identified way upthread the inherent lurking danger of roller-mentality: hat tip to you.

Last night I was in a club where in amongst lots of dubstep and minimal techno and very "serious" tunes the DJ decided to play Addictive's "Domino Effect (DJ Naughty remix)" and it was a very clear highlight of my night - I don't think there's a single bad funky version of that tune.

o0o00h really? (boxedjoy), Thursday, 10 February 2011 23:05 (thirteen years ago) link

Okay excited about checking that Ill Blu set.

I don't think there's a single bad funky version of that tune.

Trying to remember if there are others apart from Naughty, O.B. and Dubplate Wonder? Each of those are excellent, yes.

Tim F, Friday, 11 February 2011 06:53 (thirteen years ago) link

Crazy Cousinz version too, which is also great, if not as great as other Crazy Cousinz productions.

o0o00h really? (boxedjoy), Friday, 11 February 2011 08:51 (thirteen years ago) link

never heard the dubplate wonder remix, iirc. o.b. = personal fav.

that ill blu set looks great. thx.

rusty_allen, Friday, 11 February 2011 16:21 (thirteen years ago) link

Rusty if you haven't heard the dubplate wonder remix you haven't heard his Wonderland 2009 set either! This must be rectified!

http://soundcloud.com/nmbrs/ill-blu-meltdown-ep-3-track-sampler-nmbrs12/s-2B7WQ

the blurb is kinda pointless, tho :

"Elusive may be a word that is easily chucked about in todays scene but despite being regarded as one of the most feted UK Funky / House production teams in the country they rarely let go of their original material. There's a handful of remixes for underground and major label artists, the masterful Bellion twelve inch for Hyperdub and the odd appearance on pirate radio but that’s pretty much it."

rusty_allen, Friday, 11 February 2011 16:30 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah it's kinda... not true?

Tim F, Friday, 11 February 2011 16:37 (thirteen years ago) link

"Chelt" really is such a banger.

Tim F, Friday, 11 February 2011 16:40 (thirteen years ago) link

That Ill Blu mix is so fucking intense. I don't think it's possible to concoct a scarier beat than "Monsta".

Tim F, Sunday, 13 February 2011 21:09 (thirteen years ago) link

Though the other new tunes all give it a red hot go. Interesting use of stuttery "pon de floor" snares on several of them. Only Ill Blu can be this macho and assimilationist and yet remain so vibey, it's actually kinda remarkable.

Tim F, Sunday, 13 February 2011 21:23 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm listening to cooly g's boiler mix and there's a track that caught my attention around 34:00. The lyrics are something like this: "Just like the rain your love fall down. I wanna feel the rain." Can anyone ID it? Thanks.

oh wait wait, appparently that's not the track that i've been looking for. when I asked Cooly via Twitter she said it was a DJ Kismet remix but she didn't tell me the title.

Re: Bhangra Knights - are we far enough away from the early 00s so that bhangra-sampling funky sounds inspired and fresh rather than lazy arse? I think so.

Matt DC, Friday, 18 February 2011 12:12 (thirteen years ago) link

havent marinated on this mix long but also of note:

#12 - finners do we know what this one is? sounds right up ur rarefied alley
#14 - YES DUMPLIN THIS IS THE RUFFNESS
#19 - bloodclaaaaaaaat once again, seriously
#20 - is this some next 'house girls' already?? monster
#23 - liking it, liking it
#24 - YES FUZZY LOGIK U LITTLE BEAUTY
#26 - lol fuck right off what is this madness
#29 - attention tim x2

in conclusion, download this mix it is nifty. apologies for lack of usual diabolical magniloquence.

r|t|c, Friday, 18 February 2011 12:27 (thirteen years ago) link

xp haha glad it wasnt just me that felt some long-dormant vestigial shame rear up at getting excited about that track title. but yeah no i totally agree.

r|t|c, Friday, 18 February 2011 12:33 (thirteen years ago) link

ill blu really are kinda outgrowing the scene now though (in terms of the music itself rather than popularity). can't help thinking of them as a redone without a gaga, a danja without a britney - i'd love to hear them with a vocalist (not a rapper) with enough character to push back against their productions.

i expected more of them for the new princess nyah single (can't remember the title, not worth linking anyway) but frustratingly they only regressed to a sort of budget shondrae/bangladesh.

r|t|c, Friday, 18 February 2011 12:52 (thirteen years ago) link

Really? this sounds good but not especially amazing I reckon. Rarefied, yeah.

#14 - YES DUMPLIN THIS IS THE RUFFNESS

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

#20 - is this some next 'house girls' already?? monster

LOVE this.

#24 - YES FUZZY LOGIK U LITTLE BEAUTY

Classic fruity fuzzy vibes.

#26 - lol fuck right off what is this madness

!!!!! When this tune drops it's the biggest shock ever. Total Banger, but I'm also getting an Eric Morillo kinda vibe...

#29 - attention tim x2

haha do you just assume I like the spacey deep tunes. This is great though, so guilty as charged I guess.

#29 - attention tim x2

most of the singing/music written to the signing on that Reflex mix is just shocking. i like offkey ish, i like in key ish, but the producer/singer really should settle on one before Miss Singer goes all Mariah-esque embellishment...

Petchy interview on The Quietus: http://thequietus.com/articles/05794-militant-euphoria-petchy-interview

Really enjoying Miss Fire at the moment, she's brilliant.

jimitheexploder, Friday, 4 March 2011 23:10 (thirteen years ago) link

Really rare to find a great singer who's also a good enough producer and songwriter both to be able to smash it on instrumental tracks and step back and let other singers take over.

That Petchy piece was very good though I scratched my head at the reference to "so-called UK Funky". Really?

Tim F, Friday, 4 March 2011 23:14 (thirteen years ago) link

Very rare indeed, I hope she gets picked up for some releases soon her tracks deserve wax for sure.

No idea what the "so-called UK Funky" line is about either, it seems pointless, wrong and a out of place. It was prob just a flipant slip though I wouldn't bother reading much into it.
