i've really gotta sell my ffxiii and get something that isn't terrible

Mordy, Saturday, 5 February 2011 19:02 (thirteen years ago) link

imagine you went to see a magician. he gets on stage and he pulls a handkerchief out of his sleeve. it is one of those long strings of handkerchiefs, multi-coloured, that keeps on coming. the colours are so beautiful and the material seems to shimmer. it's breathtaking and fun to watch this long chain of fabric keep flowing from inside his sleeve. and it keeps coming. and coming. a few hours pass and some people start to leave. you are pretty sure that this is going somewhere, though, and you know that he is gonna have some other tricks. still the handkerchief keeps coming. 10 hours gone and he's still going. more people have left. this is cool, but something happens, right? 15 hours... 20 hours... the room is almost empty and finally you tear your eyes away from the endless flow of colours and with regret you get up and leave. you hear later that the trick went on for 45 hours, just that same on trick, and that some people even stayed all the way to the end.

if i had had time to write a blurb on FFXIII that would've been it.

I'm kinda astonished about that; I've not played a Final Fantasy since maybe 2? (never had a Sony anything so I missed out in between) But they really made a game where you just mash a button for 50 hrs? Like, you don't assemble a team of whatevers & walk around a world killing things as you see fit? Like it's just one big qte? I don't get the complaints.

Doctor Casino: Great find. I think I ran into a sequence-wrecking glitch but it's still playable. Boy does it have great control/timing. There are things I would quibble about and I had to turn off the special effects because the graphics don't work right on my machine, but it's a damn nice slice of freeware.

Nhex: Another great PC freeware Metroidvania type. Somewhat ugly, but charming graphics that evoke the SNES/Amiga era of platformers with a huge open world. Wish I went with a better character build so I could've beaten it!

played mi2 in 1991 otherwise i'm sure it would've been my fave game of 2010

Mordy, Saturday, 5 February 2011 23:20 (thirteen years ago) link

Same, except it was 1995. Probably my favourite game ever and the Special Edition was a lovely excuse to replay it.

desktop dungeons is great.

الله basedأكبر (forksclovetofu), Sunday, 6 February 2011 02:18 (thirteen years ago) link

i loved the "commentary track" on mi2se and i wish there was more of it. one bad change: they changed the monkey inventory image, so it no longer looks like a monkey wrench at all. not that anyone ever figured that puzzle out by themselves.

a nan, a bal, an anal ― (abanana), Sunday, 6 February 2011 03:26 (thirteen years ago) link

I think I voted Monkey Island 2 special edition even though I've only played the original.

homeless romantic (CaptainLorax), Sunday, 6 February 2011 04:36 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm fairly sure that I got that puzzle first time round! Never worked out the how many fingers code though, and had managed to forget it and found myself hopelessly stuck by it again. Also forget where the laundry ticket was and got infuriated by that all over again.

if, Sunday, 6 February 2011 12:01 (thirteen years ago) link

I really wanted to play Monkey Island 2 but just didn't get around to it. I'm sure if I had it would've gone on my list, though.

Oh, I forgot about Osmos. I'd still say it was clever and fun - the whole scaling thing really worked for me, and, to give it credit, the whole ambient thing really did help my hangover. Haven't played it a whole lot at all since that hangover tho.

#106: Sleep is Death – PC – 5 pts – 1 vote – Only two bucks (minimum)!
Official Game Site and Download Hub

http://pc.gamezone.com/images/sized/images/screenshots/SleepIsDeathfeature-630x218.jpg

Gamasutra Analysis

Forksclovetofu: It's a two-player only game where people take thirty second turns scripting, scoring and animating an 8-bit environment that they each play through together. My vote for Sleep Is Death is nearly a meta-recommendation; I wasn’t able to devote the time and energy it required you to put into it, but the concept and the quantum leap forward that it made even as a proof of concept deserves acknowledgement. If this had come out when I was in high school and had lots of free time, I basically would’ve eat/sleep/breathed this; as it is, I probably played it four times and backed slowly away. I blame myself, not the game.

Mordy: This was really easy to set up; I made an interrogation room, a visitor's room for a prison, a house, a prisoner in striped pajamas and a hanging interrogation style lightbulb. Everything else I needed came with the game. I'm already working on something for my wife where I made an avatar that looks like her.

Hundreds of Resource Packs

الله basedأكبر (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 9 February 2011 16:36 (thirteen years ago) link

I played this a few times but I don't think I ended up voting for it. It was enjoyable but it was also a lot of work. When you get home in the evening you don't want to start creating objects and slaving over textures to make them look right. Also, there were way more people who wanted to play with your worlds than vice-versa, and it's much more satisfying being the player than the creator. xp
