I have no idea where the hive even is. Only 3 of the 20 I voted for made it.

so who are lindstrom and christabelle?

Al, I'd direct you first to the Q. Jones/M. Jackson homage Baby Can't Stop (which appeared on the 2009 tracks poll, IIRC).

F.I.L.A. is much better than the first two The-Dream songs. The slower, grander style suits him.

acoleuthic, Thursday, 3 February 2011 19:19 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm going to have to go back to Real Life Is No Cool I haven't played it since it came out. Big Boi is Definitely a worthy winner.

Thanks to all who put this list together it's been fun.

Yep, same number of mine made it, and I do have a twinge of regret at not hearing some stuff that could've tweaked my ballot to be a little more Kanye-free (I do like that album, though! I find it quite fascinating).

emil.y, Thursday, 3 February 2011 19:20 (thirteen years ago) link

Out of these albums, I have only heard 9 of them front to back.

heh thanks jaymc but i was just making a joke about how artists that can place so high have basically been disembodied names i keep seeing on New Answers to me for years. it's european dance stuff i guess? i tend not to make it a priority to hear that kind of thing.

Yeah Lindstrom is "cosmic disco" really although this time he's got an actual disco diva in to sing over it all (ie probably one of his friends).

Just realised that High On Fire & Alcest are going to miss out. I thought they were the ILM metal bands for people who don't usually do metal. Wonder if one of those were the metal band @ #100 that johnny mentioned in the other thread?

As it turns out, it was indeed Alcest (who got more than enough votes to make the top 77 but not enough points per vote)...There's quite a lot of metal just outside the countdown, you just needed a couple more people willing to vote for Kylesa or Nachtmystium.

Daithi Lacha Flame (seandalai), Thursday, 3 February 2011 19:32 (thirteen years ago) link

would've voted for "liberation thru hearing" if it were nommed /:

imo Love King is kind of a mess as far as song-to-song consistency, especially compared to his other albums -- i only rate it to the extent that there's a decent number of songs on the album (bonus tracks) included that i can enjoy outside the slog of the album.

hercudeez and nuts affair (some dude), Thursday, 3 February 2011 19:50 (thirteen years ago) link

The-Dream album is drab and boring for two tracks and really good for the rest! WTF!

good work all involved!

hey and speaking of indie...

Indie used to mean "independent" as in independent label, and was quickly adopted by critics and fans to mean a certain brand of alternative rock that didn't fit into punk or post-punk or MOR. But this was back in the stone-age and things have moved on and stuff that uses all those indie tropes is now released on huge labels while plenty of commercial pop comes out on so-called independents. There's no rule, and there shouldn't be a rule because music doesn't conform to the same parameters as it did in 1986. As far as I see it, "indie" has now become lazy, derogatory shorthand for "music made by white people".

― Bernard V. O'Hare (dog latin), Thursday, February 3, 2011 7:14 AM (1 hour ago) Bookmark

like metal and hip hop, indie is a culture. maybe that's another way to spin your closing statement.

imo, indie is best described in terms of its audience. the genre evolves to reflect the shifting interests of the indie audience. this is why emeralds and sun araw seem at least as "indie" to me as they do psyche. they put out records on labels that indie people follow, they get tipped in indie blogs, and they draw an audience that's strongly interested in other sorts of indie-identified music.

i think for example of phantom tollbooth, an instrumental prog band from the late 80s. they were at the time considered an indie band while univers zero were not. why not? well, phantom tollbooth put out records on homestad, not just an independent label, but perhaps the defining american "indie" label of the era. they attracted an audience that were at least as interested in other indie bands like sonic youth and live skull as they were in textbook prog. they were written up in indie-oriented publications and given featured placement in indie-oriented shops. i mean, they were prog, no argument there, but they were also indie. indie overlaps with everything, or at least has the potential to do so.

i'm satisfied with this anthropological definition of the genre, but i can see why others might not be.

Now to spend the rest of the year investigating the vast majority of albums on this poll that I've never heard at all. Looking forward to next year when I will vote for their follow-up (lesser) albums.

Kind of surprised about the low placings for Mount Kimbie and Gonjasufi. Wasn't into them all that much myself, but thought they had more of a following here?

seminal fuiud (NickB), Thursday, 3 February 2011 19:56 (thirteen years ago) link

Consensus was that the Mount Kimbie wasn't that great, I think (I considered voting for it but didn't). Not sure about Gonjasufi.

Gonjasufi did terribly - only got about two votes. People I respect like it but I never got around to hearing it.
