yeah i'm into this to a point, like i said when he came up in swag last year thru the first rnt comp. i got into him thru noz, predictably enough. this post, in fact. deej is actually in the comments there but since a gucci track was up first i guess there was no way he was gonna make it to the end. anyway i ended up dling a lot of tapes, reading everything i could abt him and actually wrote the original version of his current wikipedia entry for some reason.

i think noz realized he was doing something unique in NY with his relationship to melody, sort of like a less embarrassed, less cynical 50. 50 often sounds like he's too gangster to really try to sing, so he'll just indicate melody enough to get it across or condescend to make it commercial. with max b his woozy relationship with melody is inherent in every track, inherent to who he is & what he's doing on the track. anyway i agree coke wave is a good starting point, & quarantine next. i have a few more but i can't really distinguish them tbh. there was always another tape coming up. on further investigation btw, last year's A Wave Called Yes is a mix of old and 'new', i presumed it was all old because it has shit like "tattoos on her ass" on it plus, u know, he's in jail.

i presumed he was gonna be in jail forever, plus after the first flush of summer i think his mixtapes are just a nice listen, so i'm not really excited abt him as a future talent at this point but i'm enjoying bumping coke wave again, it's sounding gr8.

zvookster, Tuesday, 1 February 2011 13:20 (thirteen years ago) link

This whole tape is great forgettable and fun sing song rap in the way that Kid Cudi’s publicist would probably throw around those words, except for real. (It’s probably not new either in the sense that Max might have dropped six tapes since.) Here Max and one of his weed carriers from straight out the Roy Rogers Fixins Bar float around on this ethereal track. It’s like something the Block Beataz would whip up had they grown up on the Heatmakers instead of Mannie Fresh.

noz on "all my life" & Quarantine from the above link

have we talked about the choppa down video yet??? it's so ridiculous

i've got the "best of the wave" mixtape - it's some dope thugged out melodic music but i don't have too much to say about it really. 50 is the obvious reference point for me. what's the crossover with this tape and the others you've mentioned btw?

coke wave is a classic

man its sooo funny how these guys sing their own hooks, reminds me of like hillbilly music or drunk ppl or dogs howling in the night -- & like when he harmonizes w/ his own adlibs singing falsetto soo lol. really charming though. wavy is my current favourite bitches all love us biggavella macaroni with the cheesy... easy

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UD1QmYQu39M

my concurrent musical discovery/obsession is this australian punk band uv race who, idk, as little as they have in common in any way, get by on a lot of the same charms; blurring the lines b/w intentional sloppiness & musical defiency backed up w/ lots of personality & actual talent

lol & also cool that zvookster wrote his wikipedia page

pete rock did a song w/ max b & it bangs.

heres what it said when pete rock talked about it in vibe:
NY's Finest--Pete Rock (2008)
“I got introduced to Jim Jones through someone who was working with him. I called him up and said, ‘Hey, I’m going to come through your session with some beats.’ We did a song called ‘G’s Up,’ which was on Jim Jones’ first solo album. Then from that came the song ‘We Roll’ from New York’s Finest. This was before Max B got locked up. Jim told me that Max actually convinced him to jump on that song because he didn’t understand how to come in on the beat. Max was kind of helping him out [laughs]. But it came out excellent.

wait you never heard Max B before 2009? like 2-3 years after "Baby Girl" and "You Gotta Love It"? weird.

some dude, Wednesday, 2 February 2011 03:52 (thirteen years ago) link

id heard OF him of course, and i heard him on some other shit since, he was on that jay diss track or w/e, but it was the first solo song of his i heard yeah.

*kl0p* (deej), Wednesday, 2 February 2011 03:53 (thirteen years ago) link

or at least, that i heard & registered as 'worth hearing'

*kl0p* (deej), Wednesday, 2 February 2011 03:54 (thirteen years ago) link

this is kind of irrelevant but i actually first heard it cuz dudes at dirtyglovesbastard had highlighted it, which is where noz first heard it too i believe

*kl0p* (deej), Wednesday, 2 February 2011 03:54 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah "You Gotta Love It" was the Jay diss. but like "Baby Girl" was the Jim Jones semi-hit he was actually on, i thought that's what we were talking about upthread!

some dude, Wednesday, 2 February 2011 03:56 (thirteen years ago) link

ive heard it since then!

*kl0p* (deej), Wednesday, 2 February 2011 03:57 (thirteen years ago) link

i basically was ignoring a lot of that stuff in favor of kinda gritty back to basics ny rap records back then -- styles & prodigy & nyg'z and blaq poet etc

max might be the kind of artist who doesnt transcend american ilxors

― *kl0p* (deej), Monday, January 31, 2011

seeing as i was the only person who responded with any enthusiasm to your confession that u were feeling the rnt comp, imma say no on that

nothing 2 do w/ gucci. cmon, thats pretty weak concern trolling

― *kl0p* (deej), Tuesday, February 1, 2011

oh yeah it was noz's other max b post where u had hurt feelings re gucci, sorry for reducing u to a stereotype.

as a grown man who was once repeatedly reduced to furiously typing "shut the fuck up, you're irish" in an internet rap argument, u shld learn to 1) take a joke once in a while 2) think "i actually got off kinda lightly there, thank goodness i only get clowned every now and then and am not a total joke figure on here"

dude i 'took a joke' about gucci plenty of times on here -- i havent even talked about dude in earnest for months, how is it not at zinging al for ebony eyez levels? & the fact that there is a cbraps post where i was discussing gucci = why would u have to make shit up anyway? shitty posting is shitty posting

*kl0p* (deej), Wednesday, 2 February 2011 05:39 (thirteen years ago) link

& saying ppl outside the states might not be into it wasnt some kind of diss \Oo/ i just see how like yelawolf or the alabama dudes would appeal more, max might appeal less -- r/t/c (uk btw) has observed this on the board himself w/r/t gucci
