haha look it's Boots Riley from The Coup in his time travel machine, jammin' with Bob.

also of note to this thread, I got a copy of Smokin' O.P.'s at the record show yesterday and during our afterparty put on "Heavy Music" as an invisible jukebox, the guests' closest guess was Ike Turner!

sleeve, Monday, 31 January 2011 22:03 (thirteen years ago) link

anyone have any guesses on the date of that photo? judging from the foxy lady in the foreground, it's gotta be early 70s right?

tylerw, Monday, 31 January 2011 22:08 (thirteen years ago) link

Seems about right judging by the muttonchops on the guy in the back with the crazed look on his face.

The Curse of Dennis Stratton (Bill Magill), Monday, 31 January 2011 22:10 (thirteen years ago) link

unfortunately Smokin OPs has like two good songs on it - the first one and the last one

ex-heroin addict tricycle (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 31 January 2011 22:18 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah I figured that out, but hey it was cheap

sleeve, Monday, 31 January 2011 22:19 (thirteen years ago) link

that photo is great. a seemingly mundane 'moment', but you can't stop wondering what happened before and after...and the look on Bob's face, it's like he's staring into the abyss. Love it.

VegemiteGrrrl, Monday, 31 January 2011 22:54 (thirteen years ago) link

The chick knows what happenin'.

Your cousin, Marvin Cobain (C. Grisso/McCain), Monday, 31 January 2011 22:55 (thirteen years ago) link

add the chick to the list of people who aren't so sure about the songs on Smokin OPs.

fact checking cuz, Monday, 31 January 2011 23:05 (thirteen years ago) link

I can't help it, I keep thinking about the recording scene from the horrible MST3K movie Pod People

VegemiteGrrrl, Monday, 31 January 2011 23:06 (thirteen years ago) link

Hahaha.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 31 January 2011 23:26 (thirteen years ago) link

I think it was just the wood-panelled studio that did it.

But it might explain Bob's expression.

VegemiteGrrrl, Monday, 31 January 2011 23:27 (thirteen years ago) link

She's plugging her ears 'cause she doesn't want to hear the shit that's gonna go down when the studio owner notices that Bob is carrying a drink! Fuggin' downriver punk.

Hideous Lump, Tuesday, 1 February 2011 04:37 (thirteen years ago) link

Judging by her pants, I am going to guess 1973. It is a great photo and weirdly compelling.

Mark, Tuesday, 1 February 2011 04:53 (thirteen years ago) link

"Smokin O.P's" blows. As does "Brand New Morning". and I say this as a massive Seger fan, but realistic enough to recognize when he faltered. And he faltered on those two LPs. Great call by Myonga to bypass 'Brand New Morning' completely on his comp

btw, I guess I just heard rumors that Bob is planning a 2011 concert tour? I totally assumed the previous one would be his last. That voice is real ragged. yet, something tells me I will drag my ass out there to a Chicago show...

Stormy Davis, Tuesday, 1 February 2011 05:45 (thirteen years ago) link

Oh hell yes

VegemiteGrrrl, Tuesday, 1 February 2011 05:49 (thirteen years ago) link

jeez.. wld love see the guy. also, pic above needs to be polled somehow

bear, bear, bear, Tuesday, 1 February 2011 05:51 (thirteen years ago) link

sounds like the actual dates will not be announced until next week ... also, lol, apparently his current drummer is Don Brewer from Grand Funk Railroad -- even better!

Hope he comes out San Fran way!

VegemiteGrrrl, Tuesday, 1 February 2011 06:02 (thirteen years ago) link

Smoking OP's isn't very good but the Bo Diddley cover is plain great.
My boss just went crazy when I told him of Bob and Don Brewer playing together: he's like the biggest Seger/Grand Funk Italian fan ever.

Marco Damiani, Tuesday, 1 February 2011 09:53 (thirteen years ago) link

"also, lol, apparently his current drummer is Don Brewer from Grand Funk Railroad -- even better!"

Jesus, that's a killer pairing. Maybe he'll let Brewer do a drum solo on TUNC

The Curse of Dennis Stratton (Bill Magill), Tuesday, 1 February 2011 15:03 (thirteen years ago) link

He's had Brewer backing him for years. When I saw him in 2007, Brewer was the drummer.

Plus, new album? That could actually be good. There were a bunch of solid songs on Face the Promise.

that's not funny. (unperson), Tuesday, 1 February 2011 15:06 (thirteen years ago) link

So perfect! Well done.

Mark, Saturday, 5 February 2011 05:44 (thirteen years ago) link

wow! would buy for 30 dollars american on vinyl!

scott seward, Saturday, 5 February 2011 05:56 (thirteen years ago) link

anyone know someone at numero group?

scott seward, Saturday, 5 February 2011 05:57 (thirteen years ago) link

It is really good, Am, but I'd actually keep everything the same and put the 'Never Mind..' in a bright pink for better jarring effect. And then Myonga's 45/LP cover montage can be the full-cover inner sleeves

Stormy Davis, Saturday, 5 February 2011 06:09 (thirteen years ago) link

Nah. Works perfectly this way. The red and yellow faded into the background looks vintage like an old LP cardboard cover.

Gorge, Saturday, 5 February 2011 17:15 (thirteen years ago) link

plus it matches the do not carry drinks sign.

scott seward, Saturday, 5 February 2011 17:24 (thirteen years ago) link

I concur. (I've already updated the artwork in my iTunes playlist to include it.)

The great mysteries of this photo continue to reveal themselves:

* What, exactly, is the deal with her hair -- a reverse dye job? Pulled back and piled on top?

* Does the tiny Canadian flag means this was from a show there?

* Who owns the thumb on the left hand side?

* Why is glasses man pulling a face?

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 5 February 2011 17:28 (thirteen years ago) link

I keep thinking that's Rob Tyner behind him.

Son of Sisyphus of Reaganing (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Saturday, 5 February 2011 19:30 (thirteen years ago) link

ahahah, that is perfect, amateurist. i've got one other photo of what i believe is the same night. gimme a sec and i'll scan it.

tylerw, Saturday, 5 February 2011 19:57 (thirteen years ago) link

actually now that i look at it, it might not be the same night. unless bob did a wardrobe change before his set.

maybe a back cover photo?

tylerw, Saturday, 5 February 2011 20:41 (thirteen years ago) link

Ooh, lots of black space for tracklisting. Also great because it looks like he's boxing his own noggin from side to side.

dolphins cavorting in a cathedral (staggerlee), Saturday, 5 February 2011 20:54 (thirteen years ago) link

tylerw, Saturday, 5 February 2011 21:00 (thirteen years ago) link

back cover!

scott seward, Saturday, 5 February 2011 21:05 (thirteen years ago) link

all we really need now is a cheap vinyl pressing plant THAT ASKS NO QUESTIONS.

scott seward, Saturday, 5 February 2011 21:05 (thirteen years ago) link

seriously!!

tylerw, Saturday, 5 February 2011 21:08 (thirteen years ago) link

Switch sides. The live shot is a better front cover. The other shot is great but too unfocused for the cover.

Hideous Lump, Saturday, 5 February 2011 21:10 (thirteen years ago) link

see for some reason i like the counterintuitive first shot being the cover but maybe i'm perverse.

scott seward, Saturday, 5 February 2011 21:11 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah i like the first shot just cuz there's something HAPPENING there, you know? i don't know what's happening, but it is happening.

tylerw, Saturday, 5 February 2011 21:12 (thirteen years ago) link

also the girl is cute

tylerw, Saturday, 5 February 2011 21:12 (thirteen years ago) link

girls and babies and dogs. sell records. that's what william randolph hearst used to say.

scott seward, Saturday, 5 February 2011 21:16 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah the existing front cover is the way to go. I like the mystery there.

Mark, Saturday, 5 February 2011 21:30 (thirteen years ago) link

tylerw, Saturday, 5 February 2011 21:46 (thirteen years ago) link

any of you blog-dwellers ever hear the pep perrine album on hideout? doesn't sell for a ton. curious though.
