wow... turns out ilxor was completely otm on the top 10.

good thing i didnt predict rankings, i'd have put waka & girl unit was down in the 8/9/10 slots

wasn't blown away by 'hard in da paint' on first hearing, but there's something impressive about a whole cd with an energy level that high

had not heard this! not as good as waka but its neat

I've had more arguments about Night Slugs and the whole "global bass" aesthetic than I'd like to have about anything and I'm still kind of lukewarm on the aesthetic but even *I* think 'Wut' is fucking brilliant. First time I heard it was in a rather drab and moody set and then I heard this mixed in with Justin Timberlake's My Love and it just sounded like this shining light.

NB don't listen on Youtube, you won't get the bass and most of the impact.

Really don't get the everybody jumping in the boat for Wut, but it's not an offensive track at all. think i might prefer "Showstopper" honestly.

i hope shipz was being ironic with his "too similar to p&j" comment, what with girl unit and waka flocka flame being our 1 and 2!

u&k viewing: crowd video of "wut" being dropped at november night slugs. that is what it does to a dancefloor.

the other tracks on the ep, which are almost as amazing - "showstoppa", "every time".

yup. though maybe i'd feel differently if i was out clubbing all the time or something?

yeah I also think it's a good song but it leaves me a tad lukewarm about it being the supreme track of 2010. I guess it found a way of sneaking into lots of lists without it being necessarily the top pick.

Wut is a hip-hop beat AND a shimmery indie electronica instrumental AND a huge dancefloor anthem. It's number one because it unites different groups of listeners in a way that Mindreader doesn't.

I don't really get "wut" tbh, it's cool and everything but I don't see what the big deal is... maybe if I was more familiar with the scene

i agree w/ jagger and whoever else about the aggro but basically dull character of wacka flocka. "hard in da paint" is a standout, and i voted for it (low on my ballot), but its placement here, like that of all top 3 entries seems a bit strange to me. dude doesn't really seem to have anything to offer other than energy and cred.

in a way, each of the top 3 songs is an almost cartoonish reduction of a key ILM contributer niche: dance pop, goon rap, and indie rock. they're songs that exemplify their genres for the faithful, not songs that unify the world under a populist umbrella. all seem like the sort of thing that should place in the 20s somewhere, maybe the low teens.

This term refers to artists like 'The Strokes' who even tho are not signed to an independent label get sympathy from listeners who exclusively listen to real independent artists.

Incidentally I'm rather behind now but Lightwight Jammin' is an absolute banger.

indie aesthetics & values (highly conceptual sense of history, self-consciously high-brown, 'difficult,' 'retaining our pop sensibilities,' anglophilic tendencies, dance music that doesnt rely on af-am or latin rhythms, focus on textures over rhythms, some/any/none of these) shifted from rock to idm

Problem with a lot of these popular indie albums was that people nominated four or five different songs off each of them. If Mirrorage had been the only song in the running it would probably have been top 30.

i think 'dance pop' is an inaccurate way to describe 'wut' & wut's dominance prob has something to do w/ its indie overlap
