Roxy: That (or a similar) was a method that many vaudeville mnemonists used for their acts.

Roxy, that still sounds like synesthesia to me. It comes in many different variations. My understanding is that the following are fairly good signs you have color grapheme synesthesia:1. the color isnt an association made by a past event.eg you didnt have colored ABCs on your wall as a kid etc2. the colors are generic ie they are always the same for each grapheme3. the synesthetic perception is stronger than the initial perception eg like how you use the color to remember a name rather than just remembering the name4. someone in your family probably has some form of synethesia.
also this line from your post is very common for developmental synesthetes because they were born with it, and often have family members with it, it doesnt occur to them that most people dont:
...certain words take on mental hues bc of the letter/color combo, also if a particular word (or more often, name) is associated with a color it's usually because of the starting letter. its kind of a helpful mnemonic, and i think everyone does it to some degree.
Pretty sure most people dont do that ^^^
i think i have a mild form of ordinal linguistic personification synesthesia (where you assign personality to letter, numbers, time etc.) the story goes: One day many years ago I was complaining to a friend that i hate even numbers because they are so arrogant and preferred odd numbers because they had a humble vibe about them. she replied that i was very wrong and that it was the odd numbers that were arrogant and 'shiny' and even numbers that were humble. We argued about this for years and when we asked others to mediate they acted like we had a few hundred screws loose. Anyway, when I finally found out about synesthesia i was understandably 'oooooooooh well okay'.
You should do some googling on time space synesthesia. mind blowing stuff.

haha i can totally see odd numbers as arrogant. so many evens just seem round and personable by comparison.
i had a similar conversation about a school friend named George Brown, and whether his name should be pictured as green and brown or rusty red.
― dark link (roxymuzak), Thursday, 27 January 2011 02:48 (thirteen years ago) link
oh no way odd numbers are totally better. evens are all goody-goody
― mookieproof, Thursday, 27 January 2011 02:50 (thirteen years ago) link
i don't have any type of synthesthesia or anything, but I have an aversion to odd numbers. like if I have an odd number of windows open in IE, and it shows me the # and it's like a 7 or a 9, I always find one to close so that it is even. just a compulsion of mine.
― teen laqueefah (San Te), Thursday, 27 January 2011 02:51 (thirteen years ago) link
hilarious. i have always preferred evens. esp 4 and 8.

also have a weird ritual in which I knock on my bed post in two sets of 37 before going to sleep.
It's bizarre, I never did this until I turned 22, have no idea where the ritual came from, I think it was something I dreamed one night and began doing and I have probably done it every night for 8 years.
― teen laqueefah (San Te), Thursday, 27 January 2011 02:52 (thirteen years ago) link
Now that I think of it I sort of think as odd numbers as point and even numbers as flat but like doens't everyone sort of maybe do that in a sense?

I thought I had OCD when was 19 and even took Luvox for it but I (and my shrink at the time ) suspected I have more of an obsessive personality than actual OCD. my mom has some crazy weird behavior issues tho, like talking to herself, which she passed on to me
― teen laqueefah (San Te), Thursday, 27 January 2011 02:58 (thirteen years ago) link
Don't want to derail so I'll keep this brief: I've been diagnosed OCD twice so I don't wonder about it anymore. Also recently I heard & read some stuff about Asperger that described me so closely it sort of scared the shit out of me (not sure what to do about that tbh).

Yeah I talk to myself out loud freely when I'm alone.
When I'm in public, I think to myself furiously and sometimes realise I'm kind of almost-whsipering and i have to really watch out I dont end up one of those muttering nutters.

I try to do all my talking outloud to myself in the car on the way home from work or in bed at night. Most of the time it's just me talking out dialog for story ideas, but sometimes it's conversations with people I would never talk to or arguments that I would never dare have, stuff like that where I can say it out loud and feel like I've handled it rather than stuffed it away. Though I caught myself talking out loud in the bathroom once at work, thought I was whispering and said something out loud and was like 'oooh fuck hope no-one knows it was me' and scurried away as fast as I could.

oh god i talk to myself a lot. sometimes i'm just singing to myself, which is one thing, but i do it a lot if like, i'm remembering a really funny anecdote or joke and i'll be walking down the street grinning to myself and muttering and i must look just batty. it's particularly bad if i've got headphones on and i'm ~in ones own world~

I am one of those random mumbler nutters. It feels like I think of words and it slips out of my brain and into my mouth unintentionally. It's only been happening for the last two years and yes, I am worried about it.
― Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Thursday, 27 January 2011 03:52 (thirteen years ago) link
lol with the lyrics, I do it with rap lyrics a lot. ie today I kept rapping the Method Man verse from Tupac's "I Got My Mind made up", the part that goes "better take one and pass, or that's that ass/your vital statistics are lowa nd falling fast", then realized I wasn't doing it inside my head, but out loud in a best buy. fortunately it was pretty empty.

Another C-G synaesthete here. When I first heard about it I didn't realise it was what I "have" (also think this is a weird choice of word) because it's not like I hallucinate or visually see that colour. I usually describe it as like looking at a black & white photo of something you know the colour of. Although that's not exactly right. The colour is totally intrinsic to the letter and will never change - although there are one or two letters I'm almost ambivalent about having a colour (B in particular - the colour is very weak). I do find it quite satisfying when words are printed in their 'correct' colours though, and I think there is some effect of it when you do a modified stroop test.
