It would almost be disappointing to come across an official version and realise it doesn't have Shantie saying "YEAH!" just before the drop.
Almost.

Belatedly noticed that Funkystepz got profiled (and did a minimix) in Fact's yearly "producers to watch" segment.
The mix has "Warrior" on it! Sounds great, though rather like Naughty Raver's "Sticks & Stones" or Smoove Kriminal's "Stop Dat" now I think on it. Shame they didn't include "Lovers".

while marcus playing batches of 3 sunday roasts at a time (where once he interspersed more judiciously) similarly sets the tone for the current arid landscape du jour, despite a few of those productions individually being of sound merit.
r|t|c were you actually referring to the sunday roast guest mix on this set? Or was Marcus doing this as well? I guess I heard shout outs to sunday roast several times even early on.
Anyone know who's done the (great) female vocal version of "Shitta" marcus plays early on?

Digging Katy B thanks to the singles poll. (And now I find she did a cover of "Good Life!")
― _Rudipherous_, Saturday, 29 January 2011 06:38 (thirteen years ago) link
Not funky really, but this chick Little Izzy seems to be pushing the same 2-step revivalist sound (not "future garage", honest to goodness 2-step) as that Mike Delinquent Project remix of "Traktor". Put out on Frenzy's label (the dude who did "Bounce" which I posted upthread).
Everything on The Rain EP is awesome but I'm particularly fond of the cover of Maxi Priest's "Close To You" (inspired cover choice).
Increasingly curious as to how this sound fits into the current landscape.
― Tim F, Saturday, 29 January 2011 23:28 (thirteen years ago) link
this would have been somewhat foolish of me. no, i meant marcus himself - by my count (oh yes) about a third of each recent set has been soulserious content. (marcus currently also seems to be hashtagging "dubhouse" in their honour.)
care to venture an opinion on these fellows work?
haha this is half great and half deeply tragic casualty of modern rap ;_;
don't know her name yet tho soz.
has anyone managed to snag last week's marcus set btw? site issues for me again.

if my myspace sleuthing is what it was then little izzi appears alas to be less a chick and more an ageing scouse hairdresser-looking bloke. disturbing.
those tunes are really fun anyway! but, given the nature of juno always being a bit of an elephant's graveyard for ukg diehards, until someone plays them it's impossible to estimate how they might fit in (if they even do at all).
though yeah i was listening to a bit of love fm playing a set of chunkier proto-breakbeat era garage (like sunship mix of misteeq 'one night stand') this weekend and mused a little wrt 'traktor' myself. perhaps a particular londonist version of bassline's general overt 2step nostalgia? but still i suspect a devolution rather than evolution of funky tbh.
― r|t|c, Monday, 31 January 2011 21:44 (thirteen years ago) link
Not really into them TBH. Even that jazzy number that Marcus was playing heaps a few months ago, I recognise is a choon on one level but it's all just not fruity enough for me, and I've already been through the process of listening to (german) Luciano sets circa 2008 after he'd already lost most of the flava and am not keen to repeat the process so quickly.
Also as per discussion upthread it just seems like a less interesting version of Dubplate Wonder two years ago.
Because the tracks mostly are (to steal your term) proudly interstitial it's not really a problem until they reach a certain critical mass, i'm not sure if they quite have got to that point yet but certainly the threat of that happening feels like a pall hanging over the music.
given the nature of juno always being a bit of an elephant's graveyard for ukg diehards, until someone plays them it's impossible to estimate how they might fit in (if they even do at all)
Hadn't thought about this before but this is true! All those old producer retrospective packs et. al. I was more interested that the releases are on a label run by a funky dude, which surprised me, but yeah I don't think funky itself is gonna go there, the 2-step beat matrix is actually much further away from funky than it is even from straight 4X4 bassline (and that's not to mention bassline's more obv fondness for the music).
though yeah i was listening to a bit of love fm playing a set of chunkier proto-breakbeat era garage (like sunship mix of misteeq 'one night stand')
If there was some kind of 2-step revival or updating I think it would have to start there rather than the strict 1999 sound - certainly funky is closer to 2001 2-step rhythmically (all the soca beats, use of breakbeats etc), but also because it's fleetingness as a "thing" (and the fact that so many listeners had already vagued out by 2001) means it's not so weighted down by its historical associations.
― Tim F, Monday, 31 January 2011 22:28 (thirteen years ago) link
yeah ok that's what i reckoned you'd think re sundayroast. (my previous moanings went unechoed so i had to force the subject, haha.)
because of that interstitial nature their tracks are obv primarily defined by how interestingly they're used - i totally agree that even that jazzy number ('lofi box' i think?) is no great shakes in itself but as an unexpected melancholy switch it was v enjoyable in context. (perhaps kinda like the blackening banana that isn't fruity in itself but ripens the other fruit in the bowl - only now the whole thing's all rotting since it and many additional bananas since have been carelessly left in there too long.)
and while even that jazzy track is something of an imaginative outlier for them, you could say similar of the big wub-wubs of 'snm' or the vocal sample in 'kid louie': each highly usable moments, but only in nimbler hands than marcus's are right now. (one positive note however is that no one else seems to be playing this stuff afaik.)
could maybe argue that what let the sunday roast material in to preside in the first place was a dispiriting drop off in set-building tracks from elsewhere (thinking like emvee's 'freak meesha', or drew austin's 'break bread'). it's the subtle glittering enthusiasm of these tracks that speaks more to the health of the scene than the shining auteur highlights forlornly bobbing up and down in a swamp.

probably the best soulserious tune in itself is jook 10's 'feeling lonely' from ages ago, would i be right in saying that?

cool! try and holla when u like something though, the 50 people around the world perving on me tim and a handful of other dudes vibe can be a bit oppressive. (I DID SOME OF MY LINKS IN GOO.GL SO I KNOW THIS).
not to presume on ur level of depth but generally speaking for an american totally divorced from the competing local contexts and logics i would think that signal mix a couple of posts upthread might be pretty fun if you haven't already checked it - just all the pure pop singles spectrum steez. would be interested in ur opinions!

Listened to the first few tracks of the Marcus/Rankin set on the way to work:
Screama ft Phe Phe - Never Say Bye - all time classic obvGTE ft Kelsey - Something On Your Mind - this is A++!?? [this old chestnut] - have a feeling this is either Marcus/Bassboy or Madfingers?
Thinking about Sunday Roast vs Dubplate Wonder 2009 (see r|t|c's comparison upthread) - diff. with DW may be how thoroughly (but subtly) he has absorbed that sort of 2-step/r&b groove logic where the groove really wraps itself around the vocals, it makes the percussion and basslines much more thrilling (in the sense of there being something at stake in the choice to place the snare here rather than there) than in SR's straight tribal-into-deep-house "rollers". Whereas Dubplate Wonder is (was? what's dude up to) "deep" in the same way that The Dreem Teem were deep at the end of 2007.
Pretty sure r|t|c identified way upthread the inherent lurking danger of roller-mentality: hat tip to you.

the blurb is kinda pointless, tho :
"Elusive may be a word that is easily chucked about in todays scene but despite being regarded as one of the most feted UK Funky / House production teams in the country they rarely let go of their original material. There's a handful of remixes for underground and major label artists, the masterful Bellion twelve inch for Hyperdub and the odd appearance on pirate radio but that’s pretty much it."
