dunno if there could be a exact definition at this point, but years ago i would've said music that evokes feelings of nostalgia - such as Piper at the Gates of Dawn

KC & the sunshine banned (outdoor_miner), Sunday, 23 January 2011 17:10 (thirteen years ago) link

music designed to evoke the lsd experience or music that provides a soundtrack to the lsd experience.

but, it must be said, psychedelic music is ALL music you hear when you are on lsd.

V. Instructions For Use During A Psychedelic Session

First Bardo Instructions

O (name of voyager)
The time has come for you to seek new levels of reality.
Your ego and the (name) game are about to cease.
Your are about to be set face to face with the Clear Light
Your are about to experience it in its reality.
In the ego-free state, wherein all things are like the void and cloudless sky,
And the naked spotless intellect is like a transparent vacuum;
At this moment, know yourself and abide in that state.

O (name of voyager),
That which is called ego-death is coming to you.
Remember:
This is now the hour of death and rebirth;
Take advantage of this temporary death to obtain the perfect state -
Enlightenment.
Concentrate on the unity of all living beings.
Hold onto the Clear Light.
Use it to attain understanding and love.

If you cannot maintain the bliss of illumination and if you are slipping back
into contact with the external world,
Remember:
The hallucinations which you may now experience,
The visions and insights,
Will teach you much about yourself and the world.

The Psychedelic Experience

it's a bunch of distinct but related things: a pop style that emerged in the mid-late sixties, exemplified by bands like early pink floyd & the moody blues, procul harum, the beatles' magical mystery tour and sgt. pepper's, the nuggets collections, revivalists like the dukes of stratosphear, etc. and it could be the expansive cosmic jamming that early psychedelia evolved into (see pink floyd, again). and it could be any music that evokes, documents or intends to accompany psychedelic drug experience. and it could be anything that descends or borrows from any of the above. big tent.

How are these box sets:

Real Life Permanent Dreams

Mojo Presents: Acid Drops Spacedust & Flying Saucers: Psychedelic Confectionery from the UK Underground 1965-1969

Are they worth the money they're going for?

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Monday, 24 January 2011 18:45 (thirteen years ago) link

Hey Ger! I would try Rhino's Nuggets II box before any of those. A lot of dross but the best tracks are freakier than anything on the first box.

Kevin John Bozelka, Monday, 24 January 2011 19:22 (thirteen years ago) link

I've had the first two Nuggets boxes for ages but I'm only now starting to really get into them. I dig Nuggets II more than the first one, likely thanks to stuff like the Dukes Of Stratosphere and Naz Nomad, old punks recasting or covering their favorite garage/psych tunes. So now I'm trying to figure out my next step and box sets always tickle my fancy.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Monday, 24 January 2011 19:31 (thirteen years ago) link

No, no, that's Children of Nuggets (which I suppose would be Nuggets III). This is Nuggets II. Some overlap with the comps you listed above.

Kevin John Bozelka, Monday, 24 January 2011 19:46 (thirteen years ago) link

i have that mojo box. it's cool. but the 4 CDs don't fit right in the box and always end up rattling around inside. that box, the harry smith box, and my heavy the world box are the only CD boxes on my record shelves.

i was just showing that mojo box to ilx's herb albert the other night!

scott seward, Monday, 24 January 2011 19:52 (thirteen years ago) link

KJB, I didn't realize the "Children Of Nuggets" had Dukes on them. I've got Nuggets II!

Scott, is the Mojo box a logical next step from Nuggets II? Pity it seems to be going for $100+.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Monday, 24 January 2011 20:37 (thirteen years ago) link

the Rubble boxes are waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better than the mojo thing. and a very logical next step from the two main nuggets boxes. 2 Rubble boxes equals 20 discs for about 150 bucks total used.

http://www.amazon.com/Rubble-Collection-Volumes-1-10/dp/B000VT2OLI/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1295901588&sr=1-1

scott seward, Monday, 24 January 2011 20:41 (thirteen years ago) link

okay maybe i spoke too soon. doesn't look like amazon has the 2nd box for sale. on ebay you can get both boxes for, like, 200 bucks total. kinda pricey, but also kinda worth their weight in gold. new i think they were 80 bucks each? something like that.

scott seward, Monday, 24 January 2011 20:47 (thirteen years ago) link

is there a single rubbles volume you'd recommend? just start at the beginning? i'm not sure if i am ready to go nuts with the whole thing.

tylerw, Monday, 24 January 2011 20:50 (thirteen years ago) link

everyone probably has a favorite. for me its whatever one i happen to be listening to at the time. sorry! that's not much help. just start with any volume that has a wimple winch track on it.

scott seward, Monday, 24 January 2011 21:06 (thirteen years ago) link

cool -- i sorta go through garage rock phases where I gorge on the stuff and then grow weary. kinda gorging right now.

tylerw, Monday, 24 January 2011 21:07 (thirteen years ago) link

Tyler - that's basically the same for me. And I get picky about comps, I do alot of research and try to get the ones that are universally regarded as awesome with minimal filler. So my next garage rock comp is likely "Uptight Tonight" and my next psych is looking like "Acid Dreams Testament".

I'm kinda glad those boxes I linked to aren't highly praised, I didn't want to spend that much!

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Monday, 24 January 2011 21:36 (thirteen years ago) link

the material is probably old news to garage rock aficionados, but the recent where the action is LA nuggets thing is pretty much all killer no filler.

tylerw, Monday, 24 January 2011 21:39 (thirteen years ago) link

I've got that on order from the library. I borrowed the SF box and felt it was half great stuff and half Grateful Dead hippy wankery which totally harshes my mellow!

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Monday, 24 January 2011 21:45 (thirteen years ago) link

less wank on the LA one

tylerw, Monday, 24 January 2011 21:46 (thirteen years ago) link

one year passes...

Bump, in light of discussion about how or if Paul's Boutique might be psychedelic.

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 14 May 2012 09:16 (eleven years ago) link

I think the argument for paul's boutique as a psychedelic record could be made on the basis of its sheer density (of information/sound) as well as its use of the studio to create 'new' sounds. i'm not reaalllllly interested in making the argument myself cuz i don't have the record at home to listen to. also i think it's general lack of the trappings of psychedelia is going to make the argument hard for hardline psych purist-types to really accept. but as a descriptor of the sound of the album, sure, psychedelic, why not? it definitely plays with yer brain and makes unexpected moves.

one dis leads to another (ian), Monday, 14 May 2012 16:32 (eleven years ago) link

The video for Shadrach certainly is.

Trip Maker, Monday, 14 May 2012 16:37 (eleven years ago) link

In what way is PB ~not~ psychedelic?

In all the ways I think of psychedelia - that kaleidoscope of sound sensation, the use of music to alter perception, disorient, dazzle and generally melt one's surroundings, shift things sideways - this is perfectly psychedelic. Anyone who thinks it isn't is operating on a pretty restricted definition of psychedelic. But I've been chased off "psychedelic" music for espousing views like this so YMMV.

They have fangs, They have teeth! (White Chocolate Cheesecake), Monday, 14 May 2012 16:47 (eleven years ago) link

WCC otm. it also makes reference to weed, and reflects a generally psychedelicized consciousness. the only ways in which it might not seem psychedelic are that A) it doesn't owe much of anything, sonically, to the established psychedelic rock genre, and B) it isn't terribly abstract. its consciousness is never allowed to really drift.

Rope-A-Dope.... The newest in new..new..new....

Scary Move 4 (dog latin), Monday, 14 May 2012 22:58 (eleven years ago) link

True psychedelic music, for me, tends to be a production aesthetic that combines things things that are both incredibly subtle with things that are ridiculously overplayed (usually aspects of the music you wouldn't normally expect to be subtle/overplayed) to create an unbalanced feel. Hallmarks of psychedelic music for me include: simultaneous extreme use of dry sound and wet sound (reverb/echo/delay/phasing/flanging) and interesting use of the stereo field (instruments and the effects printed onto them panned into places where the ear would not naturally expect them to be, or instruments being autopanned all over the place throughout the course of a track). Back-masking instruments and voices also seems to be a popular psychedelic cliche.

A lot of '60s psychedelic music tends to use exotic instruments and interesting use of tape-loops, although these aren't really necessary to create psychedelic music. For me, the ultimate goal is to create something that feels simultaneously natural and unnatural and creates a sense of confusion, whether it's a mild, subtle confusion or taking it to an extreme.

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Monday, 14 May 2012 23:15 (eleven years ago) link

does it sound like it was made by somebody who was tripping? do tripping ppl like to listen to it?

diamanda ram dass (Edward III), Monday, 14 May 2012 23:22 (eleven years ago) link

well, like a lot of psychedelic music, paul's boutique sounds like it was made by people who'd spent some time tripping (and were deliberately letting that color their art). tripping people do of course like listening to it, but man, those fuckers will listen to the bathroom fan, so...

ohhhhh yeah, that alan watts "this is IT" scott posted upthread, that's an album.

this elevators track, for me personally, is like THE psychedelic jam. idk how it's viewed by everyone in the whole arc of things, but for me it's at the top of the mountain, in my miiiind

arby's, Monday, 14 May 2012 23:26 (eleven years ago) link

Hmm. I've always felt that psychedelic music was meant to make the listener feel like they were tripping without needing to do any hallucinogenics, myself. Sitting in a confined space listening to psychedelic music while tripping sounds like my idea of a real lousy time!

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Monday, 14 May 2012 23:33 (eleven years ago) link

I'm listening to Verve's A Storm In Heaven right now, and 'Beautiful Mind' came on. I would call this particular track (indeed, most of the album) 'psychedelic', because its rhythm section is so god damn subtle, but on top of it are just the most heavily-reverbed and effected vocals and guitar lines. Having said that, I'd say 'Make It 'Til Monday' is probably the most 'psychedelic' moment of the album.

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Monday, 14 May 2012 23:46 (eleven years ago) link
