Your archetypal bro:

(surprise, surprise! he's from the Inland Empire!)

As you can see, NOT a preppy. He's got:

-Stupid tattoos
-Baggy shorts
-Clothing and accessories from some flavor-of-the-month lifestyle-apparel company (in this case, his own)
-Not pictured: crooked baseball caps, black knee-high socks, black bandana

Your archetypal bro-ho(es):

-No concept of dignity and/or feminism
-Wannabe low-budget pornstar style
-Lousy taste in guys (note crooked hat, Hurley shirt, soul-patch)

Your archetypal bro's ride:

-Overcompensation combined with conspicuous consumerism/obnoxiousness

I know more than a few bros, having gone to high school with them and working with a few in the past. They are very competitive, always trying to outdo each other wrt fashion and trucks. They are not really the fraternity type, as they either get construction jobs out of high school or go to community colleges (if their parents will pay for them to not work). They were nu-metal's target demo, but they also some enjoy some hip-hop and new-school punk like Pennywise, Bad Religion, and AFI (which is funny, because they are homophobic). You could tell when AFI hit big with them because they all started dying their hair and wearing black. Snowboarding, motocross, and off-roading in their trucks are the preferred activities apart from drinking and fighting. The girls are often tanning-bed orange and have fake breasts.

Also, they terms "bro" and "bro-ho" were originally perjoratives, but they've come to embrace the term.

I think around 98'-00' marks the point when I could no longer be sure whether a white dude calling me 'bro' was being a patronizing dickhead or actually just talked that way(not that they're mutually exclusive). I worked temp with some well-to-do 'bros', who were pretty distinct from preppies, mostly undergraduates from Orange County and Redondo/Manhattan Beach areas, slumming with summer jobs at the behest of their rich asshole dads from what I gathered. Good guys, mostly, but competitive as hell and wont to erupt into a collective bout of snotty 'boiler room'-derived meanness if women or politics came up. For instance: they were pretty well-traveled but would confine their tales to their epic hash scores and nude beach visits, etc.

these sound very much like preppies.

My roommate, who is a former frat guy, uses the term "meaty" to describe scenes that are really "bro"-y. I've heard his friends use this term too - e.g. "that sports bar is a little TOO meaty, even for me."

Has anyone else heard this?

ok I don't have much experience with either, but I thought preppies wouldn't play down their education. or work temp!

http://www.cnn.com/2012/05/07/tech/web/brogrammers/index.html?hpt=hp_c1

At one of the world's biggest gatherings of Web culture, a 28-year-old executive talks about landing a tech job by sending a CEO "bikini shots" from a "nudie calendar" he created.

On campus at Stanford University, a hot startup attracts recruits with a poster asking if they want to 'bro down and crush some code.'"

And the world's largest Internet registration company entices Web entrepreneurs with a Super Bowl ad in which two female celebrities paint its logo onto the body of an apparently naked model.

Forget what you think you know about the benignly geeky computer programmer who lives for the thrill of finding a single misplaced semicolon in thousands of lines of code.

And welcome to the world of the "brogrammer."
