Man I used to love Archers of Loaf so much. I need to replace my old cassettes, not sure I even know where they are anymore. I used to get made fun of relentlessly in my design studio class because I had an Archers of Loaf sticker on my parallel bar and people wrongly assumed I was a big America On Line supporter because of the 'AOL' logo.

ugh me too

Last time I saw the full line-up was like late 90's NYC and it was completely amazing. I think that At the Drive-In opened that show but I could be making that up because it seems sort of odd.

ENBB, Monday, 17 January 2011 17:36 (thirteen years ago) link

nah that would actually make total sense to me, at the drive in started on flipside, def a lot of peeps that loved archers liked the early ATDI stuff

dj plain ole m@tt (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 17 January 2011 17:38 (thirteen years ago) link

OK then maybe I'm not making that up. Iirc the other band that night was Knapsack which is a name I haven't thought of in a very long time until just now. wow.

ENBB, Monday, 17 January 2011 17:39 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, they toured a bit with ATDI. I specifically showed up late to one show to avoid them.

Dr. (Johnny Fever), Monday, 17 January 2011 17:47 (thirteen years ago) link

I saw them with Helium in Columbus and it was SO RAD. I have seen Crooked Fingers a bunch of times through the years too.

Just curious -- has anyone heard the film score he did for Ball of Wax? (full disclosure: i am involved with this, so i am just curious if anyone knows it exists -- also it is really good even if it does have a very early 00s feeling to it)

ergonomically chromium plated fish slice (La Lechera), Monday, 17 January 2011 20:06 (thirteen years ago) link

never heard of it, but loved his barry black project that he had when archers were still going, that was very film music sounding stuff

dj plain ole m@tt (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 17 January 2011 20:09 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah, that's partially what inspired getting the sdtk together. i can probably upload it somewhere if no one can find it. it was released under EB's name, so i think it may have fallen through the cracks for a lot of ppl

barry black, crooked fingers, blablabla

here is one of the songs -- the record was called SHORT CAREERS

i have a rip of that soundtrack, yeah. he also did a record called 'to the races' under his own name

mookieproof, Monday, 17 January 2011 21:17 (thirteen years ago) link

i saw them as the opening act for weezer (blue album era) and i HATED weezer at the time (they've grown on me a teeny bit) so we all peaced out after AOL was done.

they sound great, esp bachmann's voice. iirc his voice got worse and worse as the band went on (i tuned out after vee-vee)

i love you but i have chosen snarkness (Steve Shasta), Monday, 17 January 2011 21:27 (thirteen years ago) link

song sounds totally different, but his voice does interesting things toward the end and you totally forget that it's just him and a guitar. great post-show noise at the end of the clip too.

12/09 btw

ergonomically chromium plated fish slice (La Lechera), Tuesday, 18 January 2011 16:03 (thirteen years ago) link

until this thread was revised, i had completely forgotten that i saw AOL in Leeds in the 90s (at the Pub With No Name aka Duchess of York, of course)
the reason i went was actually for the support act, small 23, who i was vibed up on at the time (need to see if that album still hold up), but i seem to recall enjoying the AOL set as well.

EB has been being great for a looooong time. i really love crooked fingers and other stuff he's done over the years. even when he's kinda off ("call to love" is corny) he's great. sure, there were some mawkish lyrics here and there, but dude can write a song, and he always performs with heart. that's not easy to maintain for this long. he also tries out a lot of different directions and never gets too comfortable there. really every album has its own character.

dude is great

ergonomically chromium plated fish slice (La Lechera), Tuesday, 18 January 2011 16:22 (thirteen years ago) link

also great covers
i saw crooked fingers play "age of consent" at some show, and then there's this

and when you were mine by prince!

Only seen crooked fingers once but EB coming out to the audience and singing that on his own was pretty much the highlight for me.

OK this isn't even a question then. Let's do it. I was wrong about July though the shows are June 25th and June 26th. The 25th is a Saturday show in Williamsburg. Let's do that one. Tickets on sale this Friday. This is happening. I'm gonna email you later today to coordinate.

I liked em and I guess I would go if I hadnt seen em in the '90s, but this doesn't seem necessary.

da croupier, Tuesday, 12 April 2011 14:49 (thirteen years ago) link

I saw them at Tramps in like 1997 or so and prob at least one other time but I'm still going to drive 5 hours for this. I guess I just like them that much.

ENBB, Tuesday, 12 April 2011 14:49 (thirteen years ago) link

but this doesn't seem necessary

For you or for them? Because they'd probably like to have the money.

That's why they call me (Johnny Fever), Tuesday, 12 April 2011 14:50 (thirteen years ago) link

I saw them 3 times in the 90s, which is why it won't break my heart if I miss seeing the reunion show (though I'd very much like to see it). tbh, I'd be far more interested in a new song or ten.

That's why they call me (Johnny Fever), Tuesday, 12 April 2011 14:51 (thirteen years ago) link

what's necessary about rock? it's just gonna be fun to see a band i like again!

I guess a messy Sebadoh show about 4 years ago ruined this sorta shit for me

your generation appalls me (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 12 April 2011 16:21 (thirteen years ago) link

they're coming over to the uk to play ATP in december

reallysmoothmusic (Jamie_ATP), Tuesday, 12 April 2011 16:29 (thirteen years ago) link

I distinctly remember EB saying that he wasn't interested in reunion tours, that he has been making music all these years and fuiud but I guess lots of u d and now he might as well help ppl relive their 20s.

I saw Archers in 95 or so and CF/EB a bunch of times since then, but I feel like he's family* at this point and I got no problem seeing the old band again. I'm not delirious about it but glad they're finally getting a slice of 90s pie.

*slight exaggeration, but more true of EB than, say, Lou Barlow.

yeah but c'mon dogg, sebadoh was never exactly hot shit live (at least the one time i saw them)....archers kicked out the jams live

a fort minor forest (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 12 April 2011 18:48 (thirteen years ago) link

Agreed that it's a crap comparison but I gotta say that Sebadoh were great when I saw them at about that time.

Not feeling this as much as I'd hoped tbh, don't feel like it gets interesting until the back half and even then it kinda makes me want to listen to the old stuff.
