I mean, the friend who told me about it is a reliable guy, but Jon Wurster probably still talks to a few of those dudes all the time.

i wonder . . .

mookieproof, Sunday, 16 January 2011 06:05 (3 years ago) Permalink

can't imagine bachmann would want to offend whatever strange souls actually prefer crooked fingers to archers

da croupier, Sunday, 16 January 2011 13:03 (3 years ago) Permalink

Oh man!

When I saw Crooked Fingers about 5 years ago Matt came out on stage towards the end and they played a couple AoL songs. It was pretty sweet.

Man I used to love Archers of Loaf so much. I need to replace my old cassettes, not sure I even know where they are anymore. I used to get made fun of relentlessly in my design studio class because I had an Archers of Loaf sticker on my parallel bar and people wrongly assumed I was a big America On Line supporter because of the 'AOL' logo.

ugh me too

Last time I saw the full line-up was like late 90's NYC and it was completely amazing. I think that At the Drive-In opened that show but I could be making that up because it seems sort of odd.

ENBB, Monday, 17 January 2011 17:36 (3 years ago) Permalink

nah that would actually make total sense to me, at the drive in started on flipside, def a lot of peeps that loved archers liked the early ATDI stuff

dj plain ole m@tt (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 17 January 2011 17:38 (3 years ago) Permalink

OK then maybe I'm not making that up. Iirc the other band that night was Knapsack which is a name I haven't thought of in a very long time until just now. wow.

ENBB, Monday, 17 January 2011 17:39 (3 years ago) Permalink

Yeah, they toured a bit with ATDI. I specifically showed up late to one show to avoid them.

Dr. (Johnny Fever), Monday, 17 January 2011 17:47 (3 years ago) Permalink

I saw them with Helium in Columbus and it was SO RAD. I have seen Crooked Fingers a bunch of times through the years too.

Just curious -- has anyone heard the film score he did for Ball of Wax? (full disclosure: i am involved with this, so i am just curious if anyone knows it exists -- also it is really good even if it does have a very early 00s feeling to it)

ergonomically chromium plated fish slice (La Lechera), Monday, 17 January 2011 20:06 (3 years ago) Permalink

never heard of it, but loved his barry black project that he had when archers were still going, that was very film music sounding stuff

dj plain ole m@tt (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 17 January 2011 20:09 (3 years ago) Permalink

yeah, that's partially what inspired getting the sdtk together. i can probably upload it somewhere if no one can find it. it was released under EB's name, so i think it may have fallen through the cracks for a lot of ppl

barry black, crooked fingers, blablabla

ergonomically chromium plated fish slice (La Lechera), Monday, 17 January 2011 20:10 (3 years ago) Permalink

here is one of the songs -- the record was called SHORT CAREERS

ergonomically chromium plated fish slice (La Lechera), Monday, 17 January 2011 20:29 (3 years ago) Permalink

i have a rip of that soundtrack, yeah. he also did a record called 'to the races' under his own name

mookieproof, Monday, 17 January 2011 21:17 (3 years ago) Permalink

i saw them as the opening act for weezer (blue album era) and i HATED weezer at the time (they've grown on me a teeny bit) so we all peaced out after AOL was done.

they sound great, esp bachmann's voice. iirc his voice got worse and worse as the band went on (i tuned out after vee-vee)

i love you but i have chosen snarkness (Steve Shasta), Monday, 17 January 2011 21:27 (3 years ago) Permalink

song sounds totally different, but his voice does interesting things toward the end and you totally forget that it's just him and a guitar. great post-show noise at the end of the clip too.

ergonomically chromium plated fish slice (La Lechera), Tuesday, 18 January 2011 16:03 (3 years ago) Permalink

12/09 btw

ergonomically chromium plated fish slice (La Lechera), Tuesday, 18 January 2011 16:03 (3 years ago) Permalink

until this thread was revised, i had completely forgotten that i saw AOL in Leeds in the 90s (at the Pub With No Name aka Duchess of York, of course)
the reason i went was actually for the support act, small 23, who i was vibed up on at the time (need to see if that album still hold up), but i seem to recall enjoying the AOL set as well.

wow that acoustic web in front is great

dj plain ole m@tt (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 18 January 2011 16:10 (3 years ago) Permalink

EB has been being great for a looooong time. i really love crooked fingers and other stuff he's done over the years. even when he's kinda off ("call to love" is corny) he's great. sure, there were some mawkish lyrics here and there, but dude can write a song, and he always performs with heart. that's not easy to maintain for this long. he also tries out a lot of different directions and never gets too comfortable there. really every album has its own character.

dude is great

ergonomically chromium plated fish slice (La Lechera), Tuesday, 18 January 2011 16:22 (3 years ago) Permalink

also great covers
i saw crooked fingers play "age of consent" at some show, and then there's this

ergonomically chromium plated fish slice (La Lechera), Tuesday, 18 January 2011 17:47 (3 years ago) Permalink

and when you were mine by prince!

Only seen crooked fingers once but EB coming out to the audience and singing that on his own was pretty much the highlight for me.

Why doesn't it surprise me that the people at Alias would lose something important like COVER ART? Joke ass label.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 31 May 2012 19:20 (1 year ago) Permalink

I'm about 5% disappointed they didn't play Fashion Bleeds or anything else off WTH at the reunion gig I saw.

the fey monster (ledge), Thursday, 31 May 2012 19:22 (1 year ago) Permalink

Wow, they didn't even do "White Trash Heroes"? Sucks.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 31 May 2012 19:23 (1 year ago) Permalink

I caught two of their farewell 1998 shows and it was played at one and not the other, so I guess I should consider myself lucky.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 31 May 2012 19:23 (1 year ago) Permalink

i think they played dead red eyes last year? not certain

mookieproof, Thursday, 31 May 2012 19:33 (1 year ago) Permalink

i saw 2 gigs in chicago, first night they played dead red eyes, next night nothing off of white trash heroes, really wanted to hear "fashion bleeds"

wack nerd zinging in the dead of night (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 31 May 2012 19:34 (1 year ago) Permalink

They were basically going for all the fast punchy stuff so it would have fitted right in.

All The Nations Airports...that's one of the big momentum killing records. Coming after Vee Vee it sounded so flat

kornrulez6969, Friday, 1 June 2012 03:56 (1 year ago) Permalink

In 1996, yeah. Now I really love it.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 1 June 2012 04:21 (1 year ago) Permalink

always loved killer bees > rental sting

but yeah it's a wholly different thing really

was at the show in toronto last night. in addition to the age group that would have been in college or thereabouts during aol's heyday, there were a ton of young people (like, many looked like teenagers), and they were singing along to the songs! what's the deal! just the effect of the internet or...?

eric bachman seemed amused by the moshing and crowdsurfing and related antics.

Pangborn to be Wilde (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 11 July 2012 16:33 (1 year ago) Permalink

How was it? The last time I saw them live was a while ago. Probably like 2008.

dmr, Wednesday, 11 July 2012 16:48 (1 year ago) Permalink

they were fine, I never paid em much heed before. Preferred them to Man or Atro-Man, who went on just before. (but was most relieved it wasn't 103 degrees anymore)

Pangborn to be Wilde (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 11 July 2012 17:05 (1 year ago) Permalink

haha wow Man or Astro-Man are still around. now them I probably haven't seen play since 1996.

dmr, Wednesday, 11 July 2012 17:10 (1 year ago) Permalink

Archers were ok, but some of the "here's something from album 3" moments were weak, and the "here's something from album 4" moments even more so. They had to stop by 8, and when they went into "White Trash Heroes" with 4 minutes to go...well, it was a chance for the true fans to beat the crowds going home. Waved hi to morbz (who I believe also bailed during "WTH"). Dudes should have played "What Did You Expect?" or "Traffic"

Finally seeing them tonight (couldn't sort it out last year). FUCKIN STOKED

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 11 August 2012 18:38 (1 year ago) Permalink

They were loose and jovial tonight, and played just about every song I wanted to or thought I might hear. Except Wrong! How you gonna make me wait 14 years since I last saw you and then not play Wrong?

I'm kidding. I'll get over it. Just slightly bummed.
