Cheers for the DJ Q set r|t|c, bandwidth permits so I will check it out and report back.

yeah, not mega into this stuff if i'm honest. some of smoove kriminal's inorganic-sounding (for want of a better description) stuff is okay ('night breeze', 'big flavour'; his 'blackberry music' remix is v good) but i'm no different to anyone else in much preferring 'stop that!'. smoove also has this one that samples chun li/streetfighter 2 which uncomfortably hits home the impression that a lot of this stuff is closer to 16-bit video game music than it is deep house or anything.

Also this doesn't feel like a "new" thing to me, but something that's been going on among a whole bunch of producers/DJs (weirdly (coincidentally?) focused around deja vu and also ukfunky.com at least while it was updating) for maybe 3 years now?

Agreed re the distinction of the Wonderland 09 mix.

I have the Dubplate/Hard House sets from 25 November and 9 December 2008 as well, will try to upload one soon.

r|t|c! That DJ Q set!! Changing my life!!!

The DJ Q remix of "Woo Riddim"!!!!! Is even better than the original, not to mention <redacted> et. al. which would dearly love to be even a tenth as eerie and moving and ominous as it is so effortlessly.

Tim F, Monday, 17 January 2011 08:42 (thirteen years ago) link

Not that I don't adore "Woo Riddim" but this remix is jawdropping.

Tim F, Monday, 17 January 2011 08:42 (thirteen years ago) link

Also adore the 2-steppy Mike Delinquent Project remix of Wretch 32 that comes on directly afterwards.

Its a quality remix, DJ Q has a quality instro called Oh as well and god knows what else. But I'm feeling that laid back grimy, funky thing. Have you heard the TRC stuff on Butterz? I can't get enough of Oo Aa Ee, Royal T's remix of it and Skipping Rope.

jimitheexploder, Monday, 17 January 2011 10:00 (thirteen years ago) link

OI i take massive umbrage at just calling 'oh' a quality instro, it is a captivating song of jme's alright?

glad ur enjoying the set tim! bursting with life innit.

marcus withdrawal

Tim F, Monday, 17 January 2011 22:03 (thirteen years ago) link

did manage to get the marcus one in the end (was v weird though - browser randomly popped up with the save dialogue like 40 minutes after i tried, and even then it came down painful slow) but whether the set's worth the wait once again rather depends on your level of ramzee and sunday roast withdrawal than it does for marcus per se.

was fiending more for a bit of ill blu action if i'm honest - no luck there as of yet though.

r|t|c, Tuesday, 18 January 2011 11:53 (thirteen years ago) link

oh wait lol duh ill blu are live right now arent they. goin in babyyy.

Can anyone point me to some UK funky mixes (or tracks, I guess) that have either no vocals or just minimal, very fragmented vocals?

what's this ammazing tune around 39.00?

whitney from mtv's the city (tpp), Tuesday, 18 January 2011 18:08 (thirteen years ago) link

don't know the name but that one would be by sunday roast - could well be a refix of 'snm' if not an original.

ill blu admish did not cost a lot, it's true. show was reinvigorating as fuck obv! even though i didn't hear anything super new i always love how they manage to imbue their ramped up muscularity into everything they play, like black coffee 'superman' seeming 'ard all of a sudden or whatever. shox's 'raise the stakes' sounded particularly bluey, as did a new (but no big deal) crazy cousinz tune.

obv this effect is testament to how common threads of productions frame the rest of a set - same applies for funkystepz or roska or whoever really, while marcus playing batches of 3 sunday roasts at a time (where once he interspersed more judiciously) similarly sets the tone for the current arid landscape du jour, despite a few of those productions individually being of sound merit.

incidentally peeps should be aware the dissensus lot are re-upping a bunch of sets right now, including the 20th october marcus which i class as his last good one. go check that out.

r|t|c, Wednesday, 19 January 2011 10:54 (thirteen years ago) link

11th jan ill blu is v good indeed - not so much the usual radio show vibe and probably the closest they've come to a proper tracky head-down mix all the way thru.

here

(when i say "they" i just mean def-1 obv but yknow)

^ rudipherous you may as well give that a go idk? if it doesn't suit your very fragmented vocals needs the only other thing i can suggest is a ban.

It would almost be disappointing to come across an official version and realise it doesn't have Shantie saying "YEAH!" just before the drop.

Almost.

Tim F, Monday, 24 January 2011 23:04 (thirteen years ago) link

Belatedly noticed that Funkystepz got profiled (and did a minimix) in Fact's yearly "producers to watch" segment.

The mix has "Warrior" on it! Sounds great, though rather like Naughty Raver's "Sticks & Stones" or Smoove Kriminal's "Stop Dat" now I think on it. Shame they didn't include "Lovers".

Tim F, Friday, 28 January 2011 13:37 (thirteen years ago) link

while marcus playing batches of 3 sunday roasts at a time (where once he interspersed more judiciously) similarly sets the tone for the current arid landscape du jour, despite a few of those productions individually being of sound merit.

r|t|c were you actually referring to the sunday roast guest mix on this set? Or was Marcus doing this as well? I guess I heard shout outs to sunday roast several times even early on.

Anyone know who's done the (great) female vocal version of "Shitta" marcus plays early on?

Tim F, Saturday, 29 January 2011 03:18 (thirteen years ago) link

Digging Katy B thanks to the singles poll. (And now I find she did a cover of "Good Life!")

_Rudipherous_, Saturday, 29 January 2011 06:38 (thirteen years ago) link

Not funky really, but this chick Little Izzy seems to be pushing the same 2-step revivalist sound (not "future garage", honest to goodness 2-step) as that Mike Delinquent Project remix of "Traktor". Put out on Frenzy's label (the dude who did "Bounce" which I posted upthread).

Everything on The Rain EP is awesome but I'm particularly fond of the cover of Maxi Priest's "Close To You" (inspired cover choice).

Increasingly curious as to how this sound fits into the current landscape.

this would have been somewhat foolish of me. no, i meant marcus himself - by my count (oh yes) about a third of each recent set has been soulserious content. (marcus currently also seems to be hashtagging "dubhouse" in their honour.)

care to venture an opinion on these fellows work?

haha this is half great and half deeply tragic casualty of modern rap ;_;

don't know her name yet tho soz.

has anyone managed to snag last week's marcus set btw? site issues for me again.

r|t|c, Monday, 31 January 2011 21:10 (thirteen years ago) link

if my myspace sleuthing is what it was then little izzi appears alas to be less a chick and more an ageing scouse hairdresser-looking bloke. disturbing.

those tunes are really fun anyway! but, given the nature of juno always being a bit of an elephant's graveyard for ukg diehards, until someone plays them it's impossible to estimate how they might fit in (if they even do at all).

though yeah i was listening to a bit of love fm playing a set of chunkier proto-breakbeat era garage (like sunship mix of misteeq 'one night stand') this weekend and mused a little wrt 'traktor' myself. perhaps a particular londonist version of bassline's general overt 2step nostalgia? but still i suspect a devolution rather than evolution of funky tbh.

r|t|c, Monday, 31 January 2011 21:44 (thirteen years ago) link

Not really into them TBH. Even that jazzy number that Marcus was playing heaps a few months ago, I recognise is a choon on one level but it's all just not fruity enough for me, and I've already been through the process of listening to (german) Luciano sets circa 2008 after he'd already lost most of the flava and am not keen to repeat the process so quickly.

Also as per discussion upthread it just seems like a less interesting version of Dubplate Wonder two years ago.

Because the tracks mostly are (to steal your term) proudly interstitial it's not really a problem until they reach a certain critical mass, i'm not sure if they quite have got to that point yet but certainly the threat of that happening feels like a pall hanging over the music.

given the nature of juno always being a bit of an elephant's graveyard for ukg diehards, until someone plays them it's impossible to estimate how they might fit in (if they even do at all)

Hadn't thought about this before but this is true! All those old producer retrospective packs et. al. I was more interested that the releases are on a label run by a funky dude, which surprised me, but yeah I don't think funky itself is gonna go there, the 2-step beat matrix is actually much further away from funky than it is even from straight 4X4 bassline (and that's not to mention bassline's more obv fondness for the music).

though yeah i was listening to a bit of love fm playing a set of chunkier proto-breakbeat era garage (like sunship mix of misteeq 'one night stand')

If there was some kind of 2-step revival or updating I think it would have to start there rather than the strict 1999 sound - certainly funky is closer to 2001 2-step rhythmically (all the soca beats, use of breakbeats etc), but also because it's fleetingness as a "thing" (and the fact that so many listeners had already vagued out by 2001) means it's not so weighted down by its historical associations.

Tim F, Monday, 31 January 2011 22:28 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah ok that's what i reckoned you'd think re sundayroast. (my previous moanings went unechoed so i had to force the subject, haha.)

because of that interstitial nature their tracks are obv primarily defined by how interestingly they're used - i totally agree that even that jazzy number ('lofi box' i think?) is no great shakes in itself but as an unexpected melancholy switch it was v enjoyable in context. (perhaps kinda like the blackening banana that isn't fruity in itself but ripens the other fruit in the bowl - only now the whole thing's all rotting since it and many additional bananas since have been carelessly left in there too long.)

and while even that jazzy track is something of an imaginative outlier for them, you could say similar of the big wub-wubs of 'snm' or the vocal sample in 'kid louie': each highly usable moments, but only in nimbler hands than marcus's are right now. (one positive note however is that no one else seems to be playing this stuff afaik.)

could maybe argue that what let the sunday roast material in to preside in the first place was a dispiriting drop off in set-building tracks from elsewhere (thinking like emvee's 'freak meesha', or drew austin's 'break bread'). it's the subtle glittering enthusiasm of these tracks that speaks more to the health of the scene than the shining auteur highlights forlornly bobbing up and down in a swamp.

r|t|c, Tuesday, 1 February 2011 13:16 (thirteen years ago) link

probably the best soulserious tune in itself is jook 10's 'feeling lonely' from ages ago, would i be right in saying that?
