Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 14 January 2011 15:58 (thirteen years ago) link

it pulls your mp3 info including the album cover and then the album cover appears as a record, which spins.

aw it's not doing the spinning album covers for me

okay, so if the record is totally black, it won't load the song. If it's got a picture on it, it's fine. If there's gray on the record, that's the playtime.

From the novel "Spinster Dinner" (forksclovetofu), Friday, 14 January 2011 16:46 (thirteen years ago) link

so, are we supposed to upload mp3s to it ?
if so, then surely this is open to the same kind of troubles as muxtape ?

this doesn't allow direct downloads though does it? it's just streaming? it'd be more comparable to internet radio then, or someone running a shoutcast server, which i don't know the legality of.

ciderpress, Friday, 14 January 2011 16:52 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah.
i realised once i got a room up and running and started playing around.
going to try and figure out which album artwork is going to be fun to watch spinning.

I guess "Listo Medellin" didn't play then since I shut my PC off when I left for work.

Hey, anyone can upload! I did it earlier because no one else was doing it, but now it looks like others have joined.

re: turntable.fm

Can't remember if it was mentioned here or not, but I just posted this in another place and thought I'd reiterate here.

I've played around on turntable.fm a little bit and, while it has some cool aspects, it turns the experience into more of a contest or game than I'm comfortable with. I'd rather just hang with people I know and play tunes instead of voting things up or down. Also, the chat portion of turntable.fm is deemphasized in favor of some totally dumb "virtual club" setting which looks like an 8 year-old's video game. No thanks.

this is all true but I like that it automatically rotates among the room DJs so your tracks are shuffled better

also if you just create a small room and have a few people in there it's just hanging with people you know playing tunes

dmr, Monday, 27 June 2011 22:02 (twelve years ago) link

i.e. you don't have to bother with the voting business

also like that it sends you an email if one of the "DJs" you're "following" logs on

dmr, Monday, 27 June 2011 22:03 (twelve years ago) link

so you can know if any friends are on

dmr, Monday, 27 June 2011 22:03 (twelve years ago) link

Your positives register with me, but I still think the format/layout is really non-conducive to a good time.

Alpaca Lips (Johnny Fever), Monday, 27 June 2011 22:06 (twelve years ago) link

it definitely looks corny. the avatars are like Wii characters.

dmr, Monday, 27 June 2011 22:21 (twelve years ago) link

oh yeah forgot I also like that you can search and play tracks from a database. I can't really upload anything from work so I could only use outloud as a listener

emil.y, Tuesday, 28 June 2011 00:48 (twelve years ago) link

turntable.fm, front page:

We're very sorry, but while we would love to let you in and rock out with us, we need to currently restrict turntable access to only the United States due to licensing constraints.

We are working very hard to try and get you in as soon as possible.

mike t-diva, Tuesday, 28 June 2011 09:00 (twelve years ago) link

That settles it, I guess? I think Outloud has worked really nicely, with few of the problems Listening Room had. It's a pity you have to use you a Twitter/FB account to log in, but you can just create a fake Twitter account like I did. I don't see any need to use another site at the moment.

id like to do something similar on outloud but the 20mb limit is pretty restrictive on duration and/or quality for a lot of this stuff idk
