this is a reasonably interesting list imo

like...66.serge gainsbourg < you're under arrest >1987
is a pretty unusual serge album to choose

I think it's great really. This is exactly what I looked to the NME for when I was 13 - 18. And despite the fact it's loads easier to find out and hear new music now, there really are a lot of albums on here that you're not going to stumble across, especially if you don't venture out from indieville that often. Kudos to them.

I really like Guy Garvey a lot but his suggestion of BRMC's third album just appalls me however. Are they really the ones deserving of the props from his record collection? I can't see it somehow.

I mean, it's got Shit and Shine, Pete Rock, Sun Ra, The Buff Medways, Nico and LFO on it... it fucking rules right?

Glad I'm not the only person to think this. Bit of a Serge stan but never clicked with this one at all.

That said, a surprisingly good list from the NME but I'm a little lost as to who exactly it's aimed at (aside from 18yr olds, maybe). For every leftfield choice there are just as much "well-known-in-its-genre" canonical entries, e.g Da Capo, Odessey, The Infamous, etc.

yeah, there's some good stuff on here. not a massive fan of clor, but they probably were a bit ahead of the curve, to be fair.

although their use of toy keyboards and the singers weedy voice would unfortunately put me in mind of john shuttleworth.

i had the clor album in popular c2005 compression format mp3 and thought it 'unremarkable'

Tbf the list isn't ranked

Remember kind of liking the Clor album at the time but for some reason it gets blurred in my mind with the first Hot Chip release. I suppose it's the aforementioned toy keyboards and weedy voices, I guess.

I prefer the Clor album to any of the Hot Chip ones... not that really means that much. The Clor album (and any by Hot Chip) is a great EP.

Think I still have a promo cd of the Clor album.

Oddessey & Oracle, Da Capo, Zuckerzeit, several others I can't recall are all great suggestions for18 year olds. BRMC is not. Wish there was more jazz, kraut, and some Os Mutantes / tropicalia.

two years pass...

this break up is still a crap decision.

i have been listening to this album a lot recently and such listenings have massively reaffirmed why this album was one of my faves of 2005, if not the decade ..

Thanks for the reminder, I will dig this record out again, do you know Baringtone? (singer's newest thing)

three months pass...

turns out that luke smith from clor produced ternion by 'we have band' (last years album).

i picked this up today as a random £3 fopp special.

mainly due to the extra 26 minute remix album that supposed takes the league unlimited orchestra as its influence, and checking the credits revealed this nugget.
