still wonder about why the PTV-parody of the 'Ultraprophets of the Psychick Revolution' cover? (which PTV3 itself parodied/sampled in the 'Hell Is Invisible... Heaven Is Her/e' band photos). always struck me as a weird/obscure thing to goof on, maybe Boston was overrun with Psychic Youth or Sleep Chamber pissed them off or somethin

great songwriting and surprisingly great guitar and production. Wouldn't have expected it based on his earlier and later stuff.

Actually, lots of Springfield's later stuff had all these things -- especially the two albums he put out in the '00s, which are probably the two best I've ever heard by him. And I can't think of a single other veteran artist I'd say that about.

I should have been more clear: I like his earlier and later stuff too, but wouldn't have expected CBH to sound the way it does based on most of his other albums.

Maybe it's out there, but there ought to be a book/feature on the longevity of the 60's Aussies: Bee Gees, but also Springfield and Steve Kipner (and probably others I'm not thinking of). They kind of kept on going and adapting much longer than a lot of the UK folk.

I've seen Beefheart mentioned by almost every art-school-rock type who ever existed. According to the book Party Out Of Bounds The B-52's liked Martha and the Vandellas, Yma Sumac and Pygmy music. (I can hear all 3!)

Pylon's guitarist and bassist envisioned the music being repetitious and mechanical like Kraftwerk, but then the drummer and Vanessa joined and that took things in a different direction. I think Gang of 4 became a pretty obvious influence after Pylon gigged with them.

I saw Human Sexual Response in a tiny club in the early 80s and they were godhead. I still love both LPs, but they don't really capture the live experience.

Went to a big estate sale today. The guy was a big music/broadway/movie buff and his house was absolutely filled to the brim with his collection. One room was just lps, 45s and stereo equipment, including three working jukeboxes. The records weren't super cheap, but among the bargains I did take home were:

I think I payed 60p for Irmin Scmidt's Filmusik 3lp set without a cover way way back. There was some great stuff in that shop, sounds Familiar on Wood st Walthamstow. I bought hundreds in there and would normally go through every rack right to the back. some great great stuff found in the Miscellaneous section, especially Greek film music (that I didn't get to replace once lost until finding bits of it on Demonoid last year).

The best under-$1 purchase ever has to be that guy in New York who paid 75 cents at a yard sale for an item he found buried in a box of LPs - a 1966 acetate of an early version of The Velvet Underground and Nico, the only one known to still exist! It included three songs that were entirely different recordings than the official release, and the rest were alternate mixes - all previously believed to be lost. After making an archival recording of it, he auctioned it off on eBay - for over $25,000!

$2, total, at an Austin garage sale today for 40 78-RPM records -- mostly looks like square dance music on local Texas labels like Blue Star and Longhorn, but one is Red Foley "Milk Bucket Boogie"/"Salty Dog Rag" on Decca; another (sadly slightly chipped -- the only one I've seen that is) is unfortunately named Western Swing guy Adolph Hofner and the San Antonians "Cotton Eyed Joe"/"Put Your Little Foot" on Columbia. There's also a "Cotton Pickin' Polka" by Lester Woytek, and at least one other version of "Cotton Eyed Joe." There seem to be a few each by the Sundowners and by Red Warrick, whoever they are. Also included in the box were file dividers for all the records, and -- weirder -- lots and lots of lyric (square dance call) sheets and/or dance instructions for individual songs, some of which look like they were officially issued by the record companies with the records, but others of which are either typed out or written out longhand. Also, an 80-page pamphlet/mini-book called It's Fun To Square Dance: Six Easy Lessons By Louie Ratliff, one Elks Club card, and two cards apparently allowing dancers free "goofs". All for $2.

Now all I need is to get a 78 needle.
