Hawkwind were pretty Krautrocky to begin with, no?

Kevin John Bozelka, Thursday, 10 July 2008 23:27 (fifteen years ago) link

Yup.

Alex in SF, Thursday, 10 July 2008 23:29 (fifteen years ago) link

Nate Carson, Saturday, 12 July 2008 02:17 (fifteen years ago) link

One of the best in this vein: Holy Fuck.

inhibitionist, Saturday, 12 July 2008 22:07 (fifteen years ago) link

Holy Fuck seconded, their second LP, LP, is awesome.

stephen, Saturday, 12 July 2008 22:32 (fifteen years ago) link

holy fuck... they're that tedious indie-math band where the two guys play tables, right? i mean, the tables have pedals all over them, but still... tables.

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Saturday, 12 July 2008 22:48 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah, GOTT PUNCH, but tedious is the last word I'd use to describe 'em. I don't know what you mean by "indie-math," but it sounds inaccurate.

inhibitionist, Sunday, 13 July 2008 03:55 (fifteen years ago) link

holy fuck definitely rock the motorik-kraut moves, hawkwind not so much. seen them live twice and they are very good.

oscar, Sunday, 13 July 2008 04:03 (fifteen years ago) link

i love oneida.

latebloomer, Sunday, 13 July 2008 05:39 (fifteen years ago) link

Holy Fuck seconded, their second LP, LP, is awesome.

stephen, you've just been red-flagged.

Drugs A. Money, Sunday, 13 July 2008 14:02 (fifteen years ago) link

I've spent the last month totally immersed in Audionom, which is very much on the the Kraut end of things, Joy Division touches in places, but also do 13 minute songs called Boogierock. I can believe this band hasn't gotten more attention. Retrospektiv might end up on my best-of-the-Decade list.

bendy, Sunday, 13 July 2008 14:24 (fifteen years ago) link

did anyone mention "silver tongued sisyphus" by cloudland canyon? i guess i just did.

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Sunday, 13 July 2008 14:53 (fifteen years ago) link

i thought that audionom cd was alright, actually, but one of the few in recent memory where i wanted more vocal tracks.

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Sunday, 13 July 2008 14:53 (fifteen years ago) link

stephen, you've just been red-flagged.

O RLY

stephen, Sunday, 13 July 2008 16:29 (fifteen years ago) link

Holy Fuck is certainly not what I'm looking for, but a couple of the recs in this thread have been pretty cool so far.

Reatards Unite, Sunday, 13 July 2008 17:19 (fifteen years ago) link

Titan

Herman G. Neuname, Sunday, 13 July 2008 18:16 (fifteen years ago) link

good call on titan. raining sun of light etc is pretty much what question poster's asking for

kamerad, Sunday, 13 July 2008 18:38 (fifteen years ago) link

the cdrs even more so!

Herman G. Neuname, Sunday, 13 July 2008 18:39 (fifteen years ago) link

I can't believe Hawkwind were called Krautrock on this thread. That strains my brain.

But wait...*gasp!* Stephen has been red flagged! OH NOESZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bimble, Friday, 18 July 2008 07:45 (fifteen years ago) link

You could have heard me proclaiming the Hawkwind=the UK Neu! hypothesis in pubs all over north London in 1998, and also that Loop were their natural heirs.

Jamie T Smith, Friday, 18 July 2008 08:21 (fifteen years ago) link

Hawkwind = krautpubrock. Surely?

inhibitionist, Friday, 18 July 2008 08:40 (fifteen years ago) link

Krautpunkstonedrock

Bimble, Friday, 18 July 2008 09:22 (fifteen years ago) link

Also, Jamie T. is clearly trying to hog the spotlight here, and succeeding.

Bimble, Friday, 18 July 2008 09:23 (fifteen years ago) link

Wooden Shjips were really quite boring when I saw the live.

I know they're not stoner rock or fashionable among people with big beards, but The Early Years fulfilled this brief for me quite happily. (though they've gone down the Harmonia electronic route lately.)

Masonic Boom, Friday, 18 July 2008 11:39 (fifteen years ago) link

Dave Brock wrote the sleevenote for the UK issue of the 1st NEU! album.

Prml Scrm cover Hawkwind on the b-side of their newest single. I bet they think they are the natural inheritors of Hawkwind's mantle too.

Raw Patrick, Friday, 18 July 2008 11:42 (fifteen years ago) link

The Psychic Paramount does this exceptionally well. as you'd expect from the Laddio Bolocko lineage.

Mr. Hal Jam, Friday, 18 July 2008 14:23 (fifteen years ago) link

urdog are defunct I think?

I'm holding out hopes for the six finger satellite reunion next month. they were never too hawkwindish but their last couple of albums sported major motorik moves.

Edward III, Friday, 18 July 2008 14:38 (fifteen years ago) link

someone needs to re-release that Cave CD
There is a lot of upcoming Cave (lp on Important and various 7"s). The band has moved on from the Hunt Like Devil phase. More synths and such.
I play with Cave when I get the chance, but I'm an auxiliary member of the band now.

Trip Maker, Friday, 18 July 2008 15:36 (fifteen years ago) link

Thanks for the info, Trip Maker, I'll keep my eyes out. I was really sucked in by what i heard from Hunt Like Devil. I don't think I've ever been so frustrated trying to hunt down a release. There needs to be a Beatport for obscure rock groups.

rockapads, Friday, 18 July 2008 18:14 (fifteen years ago) link

"I can't believe Hawkwind were called Krautrock on this thread. That strains my brain."

You are aware that members of Hawkwind were also in Amon Duul, right? Warrior On The Edge of Time is totally kraut-y.

Alex in SF, Friday, 18 July 2008 18:17 (fifteen years ago) link

Krautwind and Hawkrock.

Bimble, Friday, 18 July 2008 18:54 (fifteen years ago) link

Um, hello, Opa Loka? if that isn't Krautrock, I don't know what is.

Masonic Boom, Saturday, 19 July 2008 12:55 (fifteen years ago) link

Looks like Cloudland Canyon was already mentioned. But I find that there seems to be an endless supply of original Krautrock to discover. If you've heard more than a couple hundred albums, then you should be treating us to a listening guide!

Brio, Friday, 14 May 2010 01:56 (thirteen years ago) link

Endless Boogie finally clicked with me a few months ago, big time. Still love Audionom. Dark Meat's latest, Truce Opium is in this vein, and good, but not as good as their less-hypnojamming first record.

bendy, Friday, 14 May 2010 02:07 (thirteen years ago) link

I've been dubious about Endless Boogie but I'm gonna make the plunge.
The Dark Meat I've heard seemed cool.

Brio, Friday, 14 May 2010 14:30 (thirteen years ago) link

Woven Bones, maybe...?

That In Search of Hawkwind album looks intriguing.

EZ Snappin, Saturday, 13 November 2010 12:26 (thirteen years ago) link

Is that the thing that was released as a bunch of split 7"s a while back?

you're not là-bas of me (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Saturday, 13 November 2010 13:39 (thirteen years ago) link

Haven't seen the name Magoo in years.

Sméagol-Eye Cherry (NickB), Saturday, 13 November 2010 14:14 (thirteen years ago) link

i've heard songs from it that were released earlier in EPs. "lord of light" is pretty dope

kamerad, Saturday, 13 November 2010 14:33 (thirteen years ago) link

Mugstar and White Hills run that album.

People who are into White Hills, Moon Duo etc should check out GNOD.

Carl Jung Jeezy (Doran), Saturday, 13 November 2010 14:45 (thirteen years ago) link

Saw Kinski do "Masters of the Universe" with Kawabata on guitar two years back at Terrastock 7. Mind-melting doesn't begin to cover it.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 13 November 2010 15:21 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah that was unbelievable. and kawabata was playing this bizarre pipe-looking guitar-thing that shredded people's hearing

kamerad, Saturday, 13 November 2010 15:48 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah that's the CD comp of the 3 7"s, plus bonuses from Moon Duo, Magoo & one of the Mugstar tracks IIRC

Wandering Boy Poet, Monday, 15 November 2010 13:36 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah I am sorry but I am just imagining Magoo w/o Timbaland rapping the words so "Space is Deep." PICK A BETTER NAME.

you're not là-bas of me (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Tuesday, 16 November 2010 02:26 (thirteen years ago) link

You know Magoo the band predate Timbaland & Magoo by about 3 years right?

Wandering Boy Poet, Tuesday, 16 November 2010 12:48 (thirteen years ago) link

And Mr. Magoo proceeds them by decades. It's all relative.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 16 November 2010 14:37 (thirteen years ago) link

Hadn't heard Mugstar before, the samples on iTunes sound great! I need to track their stuff down.

"I am a fairly respected poster." (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 16 November 2010 15:52 (thirteen years ago) link

You know Magoo the band predate Timbaland & Magoo by about 3 years right?

CLEARLY I DON'T. SORRY!

you're not là-bas of me (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Wednesday, 17 November 2010 06:21 (thirteen years ago) link

currently listening to purling hiss st/lp = gtr dude from birds of maya, epic shit. not so much kraut, but loads of hawkwind, endlessnessism. what i always wanted endless boogie to sound like.

what i always wanted endless boogie to sound like.

otm, also what i always wanted wooden shjips to sound like. Purling Hiss is my guitar discovery of '10.

Badmotorfinger Debate Club (MFB), Thursday, 16 December 2010 01:12 (thirteen years ago) link

Are F/i modern enough to list here? Surely, they need to be mentioned in this thread.

Lick me where I pee (van smack), Thursday, 16 December 2010 02:28 (thirteen years ago) link

That tribute is pretty good. I don't have all 15 of those tracks, though.
Can't remember what blog I got it from. I'd really like to hear Fly Ashtray doing Spirit of the Age!
I think I've only got like 8 or 10 of those tracks.

Trip Maker, Thursday, 16 December 2010 16:06 (thirteen years ago) link

This tribute is also pretty good:

I def. had some passing thoughts about this thread some time in the last week, and thinking f/I was the answer...maybe Monster Magnet's Tab also, just bcz it reminds me so much of f/I...

Purling Hiss played here in Brooklyn last night. Very cool live. They didn't headline so it was only about ~40 minutes, but I was impressed. Nothing revolutionary here, but if you dig this kind of music they are extremely skilled exponents of it.

Badmotorfinger Debate Club (MFB), Saturday, 18 December 2010 20:33 (thirteen years ago) link

Australia's Blank Realm is doing some things along those lines now. With a Suicide filter interposed. Album is Deja What? A song to start with might be "Full Moon Door."
