Like I said, I’m white and I deserve khakis and loafers with pennies in them. When I see a white kid from Rye County or Long Island or any other blessed region dressed in FUBU jeans and a doo rag, I think to myself, “That’s a shame. That kid has no identity.”

De La Soul formed in 1988 and quickly created what is now regarded as an indelible classic, the visionary “Three Feet High and Rising.” The legendary album, most notable for its creation of the “in-between-song skit,” was an instant success. Since then “the skit” has become a loathed tradition in rap music because of its failure to convey any thematic meaning on albums. But De La Soul has persevered in a genre where longevity is difficult to maintain.

And a lot of people caught offense to that: "What do you mean you are Hip-Hop?" Obviously, that was not my point of view - that I alone, am Hip-Hop and no one isn't. The point was that while I appreciate and respect the culture, it doesn’t mean I falsely (and lamely) try to emulate it. It has its place. That place just is not in my house or on my body.

I never liked "Get Em High" so it's hard for me to use that as a point of comparison in a good way.

I love the way the "Kid Charlemagne" sample is chopped, but I wish he didn't slather half of it in those ugly synths, it'd sound so much better without them.

I have no idea what point you're trying to make now or if it even has anything to do with the post by that Gavin dude that I was responding to, but he said Kanye was suddenly making big Puffy videos as if he was never part of that scene "until he realized in that typically coked-out megalomaniacal way that he was the biggest pop star ever," and I was just pointing out that Kanye has always been blatantly careerist and aspiring to be part of that sphere. of course he was an unknown peripheral figure in the 90's and didn't actually become a star until about 2004, but I'm pretty sure he would've put on a shiny suit in a second if they'd asked him to.

(lol xpost)

Speaking of, have we had a thread dedicated to "Who Knew"? I don't think so. Maybe this should be it. Damn, that song is beautiful. I love that really tense buildup at the end. Pink's vocal reminds me quite a bit of Kelly Clarkson's on "Never Again." They're right next to each other on my top 50 singles of the year list (as of right now).

The show's what Kanye would expect from a band A-Trak likes. Loud and aggressive and playful, and he knows he's going to have bruises in the morning. He wants them.

He feels alive like he hasn't in what feels like months. The music drills into his brain, his heart echoes the thump of the bass, and he raises his hands above his head, loses himself in it, in the people, the press of bodies around him. Every once in awhile he catches a glimpse of A-Trak, eyes drifting to his from where he holds court at the bar - making sure I'm okay, Kanye thinks - and smiles. He can't disappear because no one escapes the watchful gaze of A-Trak. Kanye feels safe - first time in awhile for that, too.

When it's all over, A-Trak drives him home. They're silent, most of the way. A-Trak is like that a lot, when the cameras are off and they're out of the public eye. He chooses his words carefully, Kanye thinks. Knows the value of quiet. Smart guy.

They sit in Kanye's driveway for several long minutes, and Kanye mostly waits, because he senses there's something to say. He's more perceptive than people give him credit for.

A-Trak's fingers tap on the steering wheel. "Rosie O'Donnell wants to buy one of my bikes."

"Huh." Kanye's not sure what to say.

"She's gay."

"Yeah, I kind of already figured that out." There's a ghost of a smile on Kanye's lips.

"I'm gay, too, you know."

Kanye starts to giggle, because yes, yes, it's true. A-Trak is gay. A-Trak told them that years ago, when the whole thing started out, and he's not at all sure why it's funny, but Rosie's gay, and so is A-Trak, and maybe they'll be grand marshals of some Big Gay Parade somewhere. The giggles turn to full-fledged laughter, and before Kanye realizes what's happening he's laughing so hard he's crying. Then he is crying, great big fat tears streaming down his face and A-Trak's arms around him, A-Trak's voice soft in his ear.

It's been a long time since he's let himself cry.

When he's done, he wipes his face and gets out of the car, nodding at A-Trak, who rolls down his window. "Good to see you're still alive in there," he says, and backs out of the driveway. "By the way, you should check out this record by these French robot dudes, Daft Punk. Everyone at the club loves it."

Kanye stands there for a long time, well after his taillights have disappeared into the distance.
