man, i keep hearing how many beardos (can't hate as i'm prolly one myself) there are over at the djhistory boards, but there are soooooo many harvey worshipping threads there. pretty funny.

THAT'S NOT A BEARD!!! THIS IS A BEARD

DUDE, YR SET LIST IS WRONG. I'M SUPPOSED TO BE LISTENING TO GIORGIO MORODER AND IT'S HOLGER CZUKAY!

flëétwøöd måçk (jaxon), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 05:21 (seventeen years ago) link

the moroder's at cool cosmic speed if i remember correctly

whats funny is everyone on djh hate on harvey jokingly too..if you post his name you will most likely get quashed!

the views on some of his threads are in the ten thousands..

he did play quite an amazing set in detroit! has anyone here heard him play?

Gary Abugan (henry chinaski), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 05:44 (seventeen years ago) link

he plays at our bar every couple of months. actually we're trying to put together a night with him, rub n tug and tim love lee right now. that will be an AMAZING night. i once asked him what a record was and he answered 'i don't fucking care!' with a giant grin on his face... at first i was a bit bothered but then i realized i should take his advice and just get back to dancing.

his "lecture" at the red bull music academy event he took part in is hilarious! you can download it form their site, which i am too drunk to bother looking for right now.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 07:57 (seventeen years ago) link

which bar is that? in LA? let me know if the rub and tug and harv night goes down. sounds great!

Anyone have a tracklist for the compilation of Black Cock edits? Anybody who wants 'em, send me an email.

didn't know there was a compiltion ...but here's the discography

his friend and cohort gerry rooney also is a great dj

Gary Abugan (henry chinaski), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 09:27 (seventeen years ago) link

Got it off somebody on SoulSeek and couldn't find a tracklist anywhere. Something like 11 tracks... maybe someone put em all together.

That would be amazing. Rub-n-Tug easily the best party DJs in NYC right now. They have that special DJ 6th sense that allows them to know what tune the crowd wants to hear next before the crowd does. Every time I've seen them everyone in the room has been dancing like crazy.

Graeme (Graeme), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 15:33 (seventeen years ago) link

gary, it's at the avalon bar in costa mesa, ca. it's in o.c., but seriously, their nights are worth the drive. i know no one goes south, but i would for them. we have the very honorable distinction of being the favorite place for all those guys to play in california.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 15:39 (seventeen years ago) link

hello 1stworldman..i've heard of avalon..i read a funny interview with maurice fulton with the avalon crew..any chance that mix is still around? or any harvey mixes from avalon?

california is amazing i'll have to get down there again!

I asked harvey about moonshadows (?) unfortunately he does'nt play there any more!

did anyone hear his mix for redbull music academy - i think it was called the trainwreck mix.

ciao

i saw harvey play a beach party here in hawaii just three days ago. a half hour before sunset he put on E2-E4. about 25 minutes in i went up to him and asked, "are you going to play this one all the way through?" he smiled huge and replied "of course, man!" it was dark by the time the song's 58th minute rolled around. the mixture of an epic sunset with an epic track orchestrated by such a master selector created something hard to describe. it will probably remain one of my top 5 musical moments for the rest of my life.

grady (grady), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 20:18 (seventeen years ago) link

great story

jinx hijinks (sanskrit), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 20:55 (seventeen years ago) link

What did Harvey do for the 58 minutes? Dance? Fuck around with the EQ? Run home and change clothes?

i put on e2-e4 in appreciation

how often does he play hawaii? and what island? i'm going to maui in august

flëétwøöd måçk (jaxon), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 21:45 (seventeen years ago) link

i mean i ask because one of the other sets of his i downloaded was from a hawaiian radio station and it sounded like he was a regular.

flëétwøöd måçk (jaxon), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 21:47 (seventeen years ago) link

he helped open a gallery/club in honolulu (that's on oahu) a few years back. its a lovely place with a rooftop garden, art on the walls, and great staff/managment in one of honolulu's oldest neighborhoods. i just moved here two months back, but it seems like he gets here three to four times a year- he seems to love surfing almost as much as music. he may play maui from time to time, but i didn't ask, so i can't say.

grady (grady), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 22:07 (seventeen years ago) link

i don't believe your story. they can't fit that much onto one side of a record (or can they?) or was he using CDJs?

flëétwøöd måçk (jaxon), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 22:09 (seventeen years ago) link

it was a cd.

grady (grady), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 22:19 (seventeen years ago) link

who was the first greatest unsung DJ of all times?

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 22:27 (seventeen years ago) link

that's what i want to know. mancuso? levan?

grady (grady), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 22:44 (seventeen years ago) link

they were sung.

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 22:45 (seventeen years ago) link

one could argue that harvey is/was to the same extent, too.

grady (grady), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 22:55 (seventeen years ago) link

and the thread title says "unsung second greatest" not "second greatest unsung." anyway, best sung/unsung dj of all time is an ILM fest i dont want to attend.

grady (grady), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 22:59 (seventeen years ago) link

count me out also.

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 23:01 (seventeen years ago) link

anyway here is the harvey part of this which is short but good. i LOVE that plaid track.

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 23:09 (seventeen years ago) link

he helped open a gallery/club in honolulu (that's on oahu) a few years back. its a lovely place with a rooftop garden, art on the walls, and great staff/managment in one of honolulu's oldest neighborhoods.

the question is: how is hawaii otherwise? i'm interested... cuz that sounds all right.

trees (treesessplode), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 23:55 (seventeen years ago) link

one of honolulu's oldest crack neighborhoods.

Confounded (Confounded), Thursday, 29 June 2006 09:23 (seventeen years ago) link

haha... yeah, its a bit of a dodgy neighborhood, but this article from a year ago kind of tries and lay out how its going through a regentrification/renewal.

otherwise, hawaii is great. for a city of just over a million people, honolulu has quite a lot to offer... and the countryside, beaches, mountains, rainforests and all that are just a few minutes away. its no new york or london, but it suits me fine so far.

also, the club has a website: www.thirtyninehotel.com.

grady (grady), Thursday, 29 June 2006 17:45 (seventeen years ago) link

Thanks for the great E2-E4 story grady..

what else did he play dare i ask? did he play inot the evening at the beach?

My wife and I are planning to goto his hawaiin New Years Party this year , before going back home (to the phillipines) visit.

Gary Abugan (henry chinaski), Friday, 30 June 2006 01:04 (seventeen years ago) link

i can't recall anything else he played- i'm not really the spotter type. i think i recognized a casino vs. japan track.

phil mison was there too, and they kind of tag-teamed saturday nite at the club and sunday afternoon on the beach. i hadn't heard phil before but really i liked his style. i guess he's famous for chill out stuff but he was playing disco bangers and totally working the party saturday nite. really fun stuff.

that picture up there is the actual sunset in question.

gary, you should def. come. the pictures of the last nye party look like it was a good time.

confounded: so you've been to honolulu's chinatown before?

grady (grady), Friday, 30 June 2006 01:20 (seventeen years ago) link

one month passes...
There's a (new?) DJ Harvey mix CD for sale at Turntable Lab now- called "Sonic Disco #1," on a label I've never heard of called King Biscuit. Some Googling makes me think it's a Japanese release, or possibly a bootleg. Picked it up anyway, I'll let people know how it turns out.

Telephonething (Telephonething), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 17:49 (seventeen years ago) link

for anyone in the area (SoCal, orange county in particular), Harvey is playing at our bar. he's incredible live so if you've never seen him you should. it's a sunglasses at night party and it's gonna be 70s chugga chugga badass music all night. email me for rsvp info if you're interested, as it will definitely be full.

yeah, and where. you're being so vague. i have a friend that might go to this. i won't be in LA until the 11th though

jaxon (jaxon), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 19:19 (seventeen years ago) link

i wasn't being vague, i said orange county. but anyhow. it's in costa mesa, 820 w. 19th st, the bar is called Avalon. like i said, email me (or have your friend email or whatever), or if you show up early enough i am sure it will be fine (around 9:30-10). the place is tiny, 80 people max capacity.

and ned, you sure have a full calendar!

i might go to another one, he's playing the next three saturdays.

That Live At Rumors mix sounded lovely sitting in the sunshine with a gin at the weekend, it's maybe a bit more conventionally "dance music" than I would expect from him though
