how is this an accurate description of the big boi record?
i think it's an accurate description of an integral part of the big boi record, but feel free to have one of your petulant tantrums when someone appreciates a rap record for something besides the EXACT reason you like it

it doesnt sound very 'out there' at all to me \oO/ shutterbugg is a banger but its hardly outside the median for rap records in terms of being 'next level' or w/e ... drumma boi has had weirder tracks this year. & 'general patton' might as well be a better-mastered jedi mind tricks beat

lots of xps...
Obv the Wire does have a hip-hop column and it's probably the column that engages with the "mainstream" more than any other, but I didn't notice Big Boi break out of that area into any other areas of the magazine in the way that past Wire kind-of-hiphop favourites like Anti-Pop Consortium/Def Jux did.
― seandalai, Tuesday, 14 December 2010 15:58 (thirteen years ago) link
It's cool they liked the album, it was just a bit of a surprise is all.
"Why is the Wire talking about the lush, seismic electronic textures that are similar to the shit that's on Emeralds records when they're clearly missing discussing the debt Big Boi's flow owes to the bay area"

ok i am sorry for not remembering every thing drumma boi made, just the one on the second biggest rap record of the year. also lol 'but it sounds like jedi mind tricks!' for so many reasons

imo residual outkast love, which made up 50% of the record's praise in general crit circles, is what drove this so high, its a good record but hardly definitive of our era in rap, nor is it some kind of sonic harbringer of new sounds or in any kind of avant vanguard of any kind. its just some dope songs & some iffy songs & less chemistry than outkast ever had together

i really dont care whether something is "definitive of our era". if its good, its good.

Guys, Wire isn't always about finding "sonic harbringer of new sounds" and avant vanguard. Notice Joanna Newsom at #4 on the list.

i dunno, i think Big Boi makes total sense. but then again, I'm A) Wire's target audience and B) in love with the Big Boi record, so i dunno

yall overreact every time i disagree with something, chill the fuck out
regardless of whether the big boi album is an avant-garde wonder or not - what does this have to do with whether the wire should hive it props? should the wire stick rigidly to an orthodoxy partially being imposed from outside? why shouldn't it reward whatever it feels like? not every publication does criticism-by-consensus-hivemind like p4k, for which i am v grateful

well the ironic thing about that is that Big Boi has appeared on a ton of these lists

i was referring to the NYT article which we discussed on some other thread which basically revealed how p4k's ratings etc are done more by consensus, and with an eye on the site's "brand", than purely individual opinion - afaik no other publication actually does that, because it is mental

Yep (to Lex). Lil B "Rain in England" getting a write-up in the main reviews section (not that they liked it) is the kind of pandering to a house aesthetic that the Wire does do (wow! mainstreamish hip-hop guy makes an album that will alienate mainstream hiphop fans!), ranking Big Boi is a refreshingly unexpected move.

Clusterfuck-avoiding xposts. I like it when they choose atypical tracks - not just Rill Rill but Sprawl II. It's the tracks list so it favours standalone songs over ones that are necessarily representative of the album.
I love Rill Rill because it has a whopping great sample from my favourite Funkadelic track. It's also the only Sleigh Bells track I can listen to with the fierce headache I've had all day.
Nice to see some recognition of Prins Thomas - I can see why it disappointed people but it's a good stoner krautrock record.

Well, Pitchfork is basically the textbook definition of "I WANNA BE A TASTEMAKER" so that's not only is that particularly surprising to me, it's completely expected (I didn't see that discussion/article and honestly couldn't care less about it).
