18 Emeralds - Does it look like I'm here?

This is one I've seen pop up in too many lists for me to not investigate it at the least. I guess I just like the name/title.

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Tuesday, 14 December 2010 15:35 (thirteen years ago) link

i should have bought that kevin drumm box when i had the chance

skrrr boi (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 14 December 2010 15:36 (thirteen years ago) link

44 Prins Thomas - s/t

Kinda surprised to see this. I thought it was generally panned by reviewers.

sofatruck, Tuesday, 14 December 2010 15:38 (thirteen years ago) link

Actress album pretty overrated. 'Always Human' does bang tho.

modrić in paradise (blueski), Tuesday, 14 December 2010 15:38 (thirteen years ago) link

That Richard Skelton album is really beautiful, great to see it on that list.

O Permaban (NickB), Tuesday, 14 December 2010 15:40 (thirteen years ago) link

15 Big Boi - Sir Lucious Left Foot

how is this a 'wire record'

lotta diamonds ... but prolly more display names (deej), Tuesday, 14 December 2010 15:41 (thirteen years ago) link

Who cares? It's a great album.

"Kiss Players♥" (DJP), Tuesday, 14 December 2010 15:42 (thirteen years ago) link

how is a record full of totally bonkers, monstrously layered electronic textures a 'wire record'

skrrr boi (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 14 December 2010 15:44 (thirteen years ago) link

I always love the way you can read every issue of the Wire and still not recognise a bunch of the year-end top 50 (Phew? Pedestrian Deposit?). Big Boi seems the most unexpected move on that list, even Joanna Newsom kinda makes sense since they gave her a full-page review.

seandalai, Tuesday, 14 December 2010 15:44 (thirteen years ago) link

Haven't seen Sabbath Assembly or Jailbreak on any other lists and I like both of 'em so that's something

ITV2: Jimlectric Beglinoo (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 14 December 2010 15:45 (thirteen years ago) link

I think 'a Wire record' is just anything they reviewed in 2010, and they have a rap section (and cover a bunch outside of that) so there you are

ITV2: Jimlectric Beglinoo (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 14 December 2010 15:47 (thirteen years ago) link

My fiancee LOVES "Rill Rill" and can't be bothered with anything else on the album.

Zsa Zsa Gay Bar (jaymc), Tuesday, 14 December 2010 15:48 (thirteen years ago) link

i quite like Tell 'Em but nothing else (maybe Crown On The Ground)

how is this an accurate description of the big boi record?

lotta diamonds ... but prolly more display names (deej), Tuesday, 14 December 2010 15:53 (thirteen years ago) link

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rYtwBDZ8c_o

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h_1ivdW8Yj4

sounds 'out-there' enough to be a wire record but even so, wire's rap coverage has never really been about finding the weird and obscure, just what they find dope. hell, noz is their head rap writer.

also did big boi record a video for every song?

irish xmas caek, get that marzipan inta ya (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 14 December 2010 15:55 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, its a great album, but I wouldn't describe is as "bonkers" or "monstrously layered" at all.

one pretty obvious guy in the obvious (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 14 December 2010 15:55 (thirteen years ago) link

monstrously layered otm imo. in fact maybe sometimes it seems too busy?

how is this an accurate description of the big boi record?

i think it's an accurate description of an integral part of the big boi record, but feel free to have one of your petulant tantrums when someone appreciates a rap record for something besides the EXACT reason you like it

skrrr boi (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 14 December 2010 15:56 (thirteen years ago) link

it doesnt sound very 'out there' at all to me \oO/ shutterbugg is a banger but its hardly outside the median for rap records in terms of being 'next level' or w/e ... drumma boi has had weirder tracks this year. & 'general patton' might as well be a better-mastered jedi mind tricks beat

the fucking e-40 record had more weird beats than the big boi

lotta diamonds ... but prolly more display names (deej), Tuesday, 14 December 2010 15:58 (thirteen years ago) link

lots of xps...

Obv the Wire does have a hip-hop column and it's probably the column that engages with the "mainstream" more than any other, but I didn't notice Big Boi break out of that area into any other areas of the magazine in the way that past Wire kind-of-hiphop favourites like Anti-Pop Consortium/Def Jux did.

seandalai, Tuesday, 14 December 2010 15:58 (thirteen years ago) link

It's cool they liked the album, it was just a bit of a surprise is all.

"Why is the Wire talking about the lush, seismic electronic textures that are similar to the shit that's on Emeralds records when they're clearly missing discussing the debt Big Boi's flow owes to the bay area"

skrrr boi (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 14 December 2010 15:59 (thirteen years ago) link

ok i am sorry for not remembering every thing drumma boi made, just the one on the second biggest rap record of the year. also lol 'but it sounds like jedi mind tricks!' for so many reasons

irish xmas caek, get that marzipan inta ya (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 14 December 2010 15:59 (thirteen years ago) link

imo residual outkast love, which made up 50% of the record's praise in general crit circles, is what drove this so high, its a good record but hardly definitive of our era in rap, nor is it some kind of sonic harbringer of new sounds or in any kind of avant vanguard of any kind. its just some dope songs & some iffy songs & less chemistry than outkast ever had together

big boi has "less chemistry" with... big boi?

i really dont care whether something is "definitive of our era". if its good, its good.

am i just not allowed to disagree or make any points at all any more? im entirely not zinging, or being confrontational, just think its a silly choice for a wire list .... kind of wack imo

you are allowed to but recently you have been on some "my opinions are right and if you think different you are rong and dishonest and should die" type ish and its fucking annoying

irish xmas caek, get that marzipan inta ya (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 14 December 2010 16:06 (thirteen years ago) link

Guys, Wire isn't always about finding "sonic harbringer of new sounds" and avant vanguard. Notice Joanna Newsom at #4 on the list.

sofatruck, Tuesday, 14 December 2010 16:06 (thirteen years ago) link

i dunno, i think Big Boi makes total sense. but then again, I'm A) Wire's target audience and B) in love with the Big Boi record, so i dunno

lotta diamonds ... but prolly more display names (deej), Tuesday, 14 December 2010 16:07 (thirteen years ago) link

regardless of whether the big boi album is an avant-garde wonder or not - what does this have to do with whether the wire should hive it props? should the wire stick rigidly to an orthodoxy partially being imposed from outside? why shouldn't it reward whatever it feels like? not every publication does criticism-by-consensus-hivemind like p4k, for which i am v grateful

lex diamonds (lex pretend), Tuesday, 14 December 2010 16:07 (thirteen years ago) link

*give it props

lex diamonds (lex pretend), Tuesday, 14 December 2010 16:08 (thirteen years ago) link

well the ironic thing about that is that Big Boi has appeared on a ton of these lists

How do you break down "this is here by hivemind fiat" from "this is here because a bunch of people actually liked it"?

"Kiss Players♥" (DJP), Tuesday, 14 December 2010 16:09 (thirteen years ago) link

lol i love that you don't disagree with my main point of thinking people who disagree with you as being rong and dishonest. the should die thing was hyperbole.
