This is one I've seen pop up in too many lists for me to not investigate it at the least. I guess I just like the name/title.

Kinda surprised to see this. I thought it was generally panned by reviewers.

Actress album pretty overrated. 'Always Human' does bang tho.

That Richard Skelton album is really beautiful, great to see it on that list.

I always love the way you can read every issue of the Wire and still not recognise a bunch of the year-end top 50 (Phew? Pedestrian Deposit?). Big Boi seems the most unexpected move on that list, even Joanna Newsom kinda makes sense since they gave her a full-page review.

Haven't seen Sabbath Assembly or Jailbreak on any other lists and I like both of 'em so that's something

I think 'a Wire record' is just anything they reviewed in 2010, and they have a rap section (and cover a bunch outside of that) so there you are

My fiancee LOVES "Rill Rill" and can't be bothered with anything else on the album.

i quite like Tell 'Em but nothing else (maybe Crown On The Ground)

sounds 'out-there' enough to be a wire record but even so, wire's rap coverage has never really been about finding the weird and obscure, just what they find dope. hell, noz is their head rap writer.

Yeah, its a great album, but I wouldn't describe is as "bonkers" or "monstrously layered" at all.

it doesnt sound very 'out there' at all to me \oO/ shutterbugg is a banger but its hardly outside the median for rap records in terms of being 'next level' or w/e ... drumma boi has had weirder tracks this year. & 'general patton' might as well be a better-mastered jedi mind tricks beat

Obv the Wire does have a hip-hop column and it's probably the column that engages with the "mainstream" more than any other, but I didn't notice Big Boi break out of that area into any other areas of the magazine in the way that past Wire kind-of-hiphop favourites like Anti-Pop Consortium/Def Jux did.

It's cool they liked the album, it was just a bit of a surprise is all.

imo residual outkast love, which made up 50% of the record's praise in general crit circles, is what drove this so high, its a good record but hardly definitive of our era in rap, nor is it some kind of sonic harbringer of new sounds or in any kind of avant vanguard of any kind. its just some dope songs & some iffy songs & less chemistry than outkast ever had together
