Infinity Guitars was the one that finally hooked me, but I don't think it's one that falls neatly into the "Lush-in-the-red" category.

Sleigh Bells' performance opening for LCD Soundsystem was one of the most awful things I've ever seen.

i've only heard "tell 'em" by sleigh bells and i absolutely loathed it

Rill Rill is like the only song on that album I DON'T like, I have no idea why everyone rallys round it

That's definitely not a peanut butter and jelly show bill. More like peanut butter and dijonaise. xp

"Crown on the Ground" was on P4k's list last year.

u right
― Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Tuesday, 14 December 2010 15:05 (thirteen years ago) link
definitely some good stuff in the pitchfork list aside from their continued obsession with the "deep" soul-searching LCD tracks. they are extremely good at picking the best tracks on indie rock albums (e.g. "Desire Lines") and then go for the most maudlin bullshit on every new Murphy CD.

I wasn't making suggestions for what should be on the list, I was trying to get Ned to hear Sleigh Bells!

why is "run the heart" produced to make the listener feel like they have tinnitus
― lex diamonds (lex pretend), Tuesday, 14 December 2010 15:06 (thirteen years ago) link
how can you claim to like club music and then ask questions like that
The whole album is like that.
It took me months not to hate it, and now I actually love it.

Dan, since u r here, did you see this from the other day? Whatcha listening to 2010?

i like club music that sounds pristine and totally polished!
― lex diamonds (lex pretend), Tuesday, 14 December 2010 15:07 (thirteen years ago) link
that constant high-pitched tinnitus thing in sleigh bells songs would be AWFUL in a club
― lex diamonds (lex pretend), Tuesday, 14 December 2010 15:08 (thirteen years ago) link
Half the bands I saw in clubs in the 90s played through horrible pa systems that sounded just like that.
― Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Tuesday, 14 December 2010 15:09 (thirteen years ago) link
I did see that, just haven't gotten to it
Lex, that Sleigh Bells album is about bombastic musical extremes; you are essentially genetically predisposed to dislike it.

So "Run the Heart" is definitely better than "Rill Rill" but...it's not the end of the world?
― Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 14 December 2010 15:27 (thirteen years ago) link
"Crown on the Ground" isn't really doing it for me either, then again that sounds like a pretty cruddy low kbps rip. (If it's meant to sound like that then I don't know what to think.)

yeah, i hope none of the people who make this kind of stuff own dogs. that would just be cruel.

I always love the way you can read every issue of the Wire and still not recognise a bunch of the year-end top 50 (Phew? Pedestrian Deposit?). Big Boi seems the most unexpected move on that list, even Joanna Newsom kinda makes sense since they gave her a full-page review.
― seandalai, Tuesday, 14 December 2010 15:44 (thirteen years ago) link
Haven't seen Sabbath Assembly or Jailbreak on any other lists and I like both of 'em so that's something

I think 'a Wire record' is just anything they reviewed in 2010, and they have a rap section (and cover a bunch outside of that) so there you are

sounds 'out-there' enough to be a wire record but even so, wire's rap coverage has never really been about finding the weird and obscure, just what they find dope. hell, noz is their head rap writer.
also did big boi record a video for every song?
― irish xmas caek, get that marzipan inta ya (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 14 December 2010 15:55 (thirteen years ago) link
Yeah, its a great album, but I wouldn't describe is as "bonkers" or "monstrously layered" at all.

monstrously layered otm imo. in fact maybe sometimes it seems too busy?
i think it's an accurate description of an integral part of the big boi record, but feel free to have one of your petulant tantrums when someone appreciates a rap record for something besides the EXACT reason you like it
― skrrr boi (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 14 December 2010 15:56 (thirteen years ago) link
it doesnt sound very 'out there' at all to me \oO/ shutterbugg is a banger but its hardly outside the median for rap records in terms of being 'next level' or w/e ... drumma boi has had weirder tracks this year. & 'general patton' might as well be a better-mastered jedi mind tricks beat

lots of xps...
Obv the Wire does have a hip-hop column and it's probably the column that engages with the "mainstream" more than any other, but I didn't notice Big Boi break out of that area into any other areas of the magazine in the way that past Wire kind-of-hiphop favourites like Anti-Pop Consortium/Def Jux did.
