he calls drake the "king of hashtag rappers" and means it as a compliment

o let's not do it and say we did (The Reverend), Monday, 13 December 2010 10:27 (thirteen years ago) link

oh, well to be fair he did say that diggy simmons sounded better on the beat

ad hom alone (J0rdan S.), Monday, 13 December 2010 10:27 (thirteen years ago) link

i like the ramadanman track but so far nothing else i haven't heard already that sounds interesting to me

o let's not do it and say we did (The Reverend), Monday, 13 December 2010 10:31 (thirteen years ago) link

it's weird tho -- i liked the beat at first, though now i find it pretty repulsive, but in any event it doesn't strike me as the type of beat like "miss me" or something where you can just totally vibe to the thing while ignoring the rapping -- it seems more, purposefully, like a backdrop beat that's really meant to emphasize the lyrics

ad hom alone (J0rdan S.), Monday, 13 December 2010 10:31 (thirteen years ago) link

talking about "over" obv

ad hom alone (J0rdan S.), Monday, 13 December 2010 10:31 (thirteen years ago) link

damn, i always forget how good that alicia joint is

o let's not do it and say we did (The Reverend), Monday, 13 December 2010 10:32 (thirteen years ago) link

"over" beat is dope in a heatmade in '04 kinda way but that just makes me wish i could hear some roc dudes in their prime spit gully shit on it

o let's not do it and say we did (The Reverend), Monday, 13 December 2010 10:33 (thirteen years ago) link

also i thought his point about t-pain was bizarre & didn't really make sense in the context of what he said about drake? like, i guess the idea of rap/r&b being "slash & burn" or w/e was sorta right, but it seems off to me to say that drake has avoided the fate of being cast off due to self-parody because he put out a "cogent" debut album by using the example of t-pain, who was actually a really coherent album artist

also i fail to see the connection b/w putting out a "cogent" album & not randomly losing favor w/in the industry & public

ad hom alone (J0rdan S.), Monday, 13 December 2010 10:37 (thirteen years ago) link

the alicia joint is def very good -- would actually like to see drake put more time into writing r&b for other artists

ad hom alone (J0rdan S.), Monday, 13 December 2010 10:39 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah otm. also t-pain was never really taken as a rapper like drake usually is, just as a dude who raps sometimes like lil jon or pharrell or something xp

o let's not do it and say we did (The Reverend), Monday, 13 December 2010 10:40 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah, the example of lil wayne wouldn't fit for brandon's thesis because wayne hasn't fallen off, but he's clearly the direct lineage for drake's sing/rap thing, and more importantly, being ubiquitous all over other ppl's singles in both fashions

as for singles, t-pain raps on "kiss kiss" & "shawty get loose" but most of his rapping was on like random remixes that only nerds heard

ad hom alone (J0rdan S.), Monday, 13 December 2010 10:47 (thirteen years ago) link

i guess there are a few others that he raps on ("go girl" etc) but i think he's still classified more like ne-yo, the-dream or akon than wayne or kanye

ad hom alone (J0rdan S.), Monday, 13 December 2010 10:48 (thirteen years ago) link

They did this last year but Vice's albums of the year chart is usually as funny as their tips of the year spoof.

Carl Jung Jeezy (Doran), Monday, 13 December 2010 14:35 (thirteen years ago) link

Would be funnier if it were more accurate I think. Also they've actually reused, almost word for word, some of the jokes from last year.

Matt DC, Monday, 13 December 2010 15:06 (thirteen years ago) link

http://www.viceland.com/music/2009/12/the-vice-albums-of-the-year/

They've re-used word for word more than just the jokes afaict. But that is the joke right?

O Permaban (NickB), Monday, 13 December 2010 15:11 (thirteen years ago) link

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Monday, 13 December 2010 15:17 (thirteen years ago) link

I think that's partly the joke. They reused their tips one word for word.

Funny

9. A rapper moving hip-hop into ‘uncharted territories’. i.e.: Has the same neon cyberdog aesthetic as a Joel Schumacher Batman film.

Soon going to have to do a list of my top 101 albums of the year, many of which are unsurprisingly not here. LOL do people still read blogs?

curmudgeon, Monday, 13 December 2010 17:29 (thirteen years ago) link

the "over" writeup is shameless & embarassing but so is everything they've ever written about drake. this list is pretty hot so far, though. i always appreciate their eoy trax lists most in years when i wasn't really paying attention to p4k goings on during the year

First list to feature Autechre if Ctrl+F is to be believed.

I mean, the first guy has Thomas Koner, Kevin Drumm and Keith Fullerton Williams which are pretty cool so the other ones should be interesting. As for the second one, I can't fucking stand Joanna Newsom but she has plenty of never-heard-of japanese stuff that looks rad. Kinda like reading volcanictongue or The Wire EOY lists.

21. Four Tet - There Is Love in You

this is about as high as four tet's been all year; a fucking shame, as it's his best album, and one of my top 5 or so of the year :(

This is a pretty funny thread though, with everyone bitching and bitching about how boring and similar these lists are, but when presented with one that really looks completely different from the rest (the Classic Rock), its all, "lol that is an awful list full of awful music". No pleasing you guys at all, is there? "Different" lists only count if they have the records you like?

Same. Might not be as groundbreaking as many others, but it's one of the few that I never got tired of after months and months of replays.

random thoughts on pfork traxxx list:

don't get the big deal w/r/t "round and round" -- i mean it's okay, but.....?

worst song on the LCD album at #3 = looool

can't believe "fuck you" is stuck at #26, that is CRIMINAL

think "CMYK" is the better james blake track..

worst sleigh bells song at #14, there's a reason the album is awesome but none of the other songs sound like fucking "rill rill"

oh, and wasn't "exhibit c" from '09?

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Tuesday, 14 December 2010 06:40 (thirteen years ago) link

p4k list has a lot right on it!

but i'm shocked about the placement of "i can change"

ok (Tape Store), Tuesday, 14 December 2010 06:55 (thirteen years ago) link

and "rill rill" is beautiful (my no. 1 last year!)

worst sleigh bells song at #14, there's a reason the album is awesome but none of the other songs sound like fucking "rill rill"

If this is true maybe I might actually give that album a chance.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 14 December 2010 07:00 (thirteen years ago) link

I didn't think that SB album would stick with me as well as it has

re: I can change, do you think there's a better track on the album, Tape Store?

Dan S, Tuesday, 14 December 2010 07:02 (thirteen years ago) link

i don't think i would label any song from that album a "standout," but at least I see how p4k could (stupidly) think "'All I Want' = our '"Heroes"'!!!

that entire lcd album is boring

IMO this is the best P4k EOY Track list in years. The last two or three had some real garbage, but this one seems pretty OTM for their audience and taste.
