I really like the photo. I just thought people might find a picture of a couple of plastic toys slightly odd.

Nothing to be embarrassed about treefell, that shot has great lighting, and as AA said, great to practice on too.

Here are a few pictures I took during xmas hols. I only took about 20 photos the entire 17 days I was away visiting family. I intended to take more, but... it's too cold to be outside for long in Edmonton in December and my dog will only pose for so long.

Does anyone have any tips/tricks for dealing with light pollution? Usually the sky in my nighttime photos comes out DARK RED. I have figured out how to kind of sort of maybe fix this in LR/Photoshop but is there a way of dealing with light pollution when taking the actual photo?

Also the light pollution thing, could be white balance, but you can alter that in Lr, so i er dunno.

not_goodwin, the buildings comprise Edmonton's Muttart Conservatory. Each pyramid houses a different 'zone' of plants (desert, tropical, temperate, and a changing exhibit). It's a super place.

I did find that adjusting the w/b in LR helped with the light pollution (tbh was too cold to stand around fiddling with it while taking the photos). Though looking through other flickr photos tagged with Muttart Conservatory, I saw a couple nighttime shots that made interesting use of light pollution (here and here)

In post, aside from adjusting white balance, you could try working with the color sliders in LR - drop the red and see how that affects the rest of the image, etc.?

AFAIK, there's no in-camera/exposure solution - that's why astrophotographers basically have to be in the middle of nowhere.

Yup I did the colour sliders thing too, so it looks like I was mostly on track in my own attempts to combat light pollution. Good to know. I think I'm just hesitant to use too much photoshop/LR so I always assume I'm overdoing it. I don't know. Anyway, thanks for the suggestions various people.

This is me also, I want my shots to look as close to what I've seen as possible, the most I ever do to a shot is sharpen and saturate a little.

I really need to make an effort to get out more with the camera, had a bit of a dry spell since before Christmas.

Mike, that's a gorgeous shot, nothing to be embarrassed about.
To be honest, I've learn't a lot from your stream, having a nosey at peoples Exif data is quite helpful.

I knew that I got this one right after I hit the shutter! Been feeling bold lately.

Also I continue to be in looooove with the Olympus 35 RC. It's a great little camera, and the 42mm focal length is pretty ideal most of the time.

But I played with a Petri Color 35 today and was a little jealous... aperture and shutter speed on separate dials on the top of the camera! Focus on a 3rd dial! You can use the whole thing with just your right hand.

Aw the XA2 is one of my favorites. Sometimes I think I'd like an XA, but then I figure if I'm gonna use a point and shoot I might as well use the one that doesn't demand focusing.

it is funny to imagine that something really awful has happened to the woman in that photo above, and the reaction from you all is "the 42mm focal length is pretty ideal" and "great street grab!" and "would love to see that large on a wall"... i mean, obviously we hope nothing bad has happened, but it's kind of entertaining to read the last few posts as if they were written by cold misanthropic androids.

Oh I think that was actually more of a grimace in the sunlight than anything else (the look she made was really brief) but yeah, if you take pictures of strangers then you never know what they're doing or thinking. And if you've decided to take pictures of strangers then you're probably also inclined to take pictures of them when they're making unusual gestures, expressions, or just seem to be doing weird/different things or standing in a strange way or holding something unusual, etc. And then when all is said and done you end up with a photograph and are then ready to talk about "photographic" things, like the focal length of the lens, or whether or not you think a picture is "successful." Any narrative you imagine at that point is really going to be something of your own invention.

Like it's significant that a picture is of something that actually *happened* in a real place, but in the end it's still just a picture without time or context. It usually doesn't tell a story, but just shows the way things looked for an instant once from a certain perspective, inside a rectangle.

And I really do stand by the 42mm (or 40mm) focal length!

I wasn't criticising the voyeurism of street photography or anything like that! I just meant it was actually funny (for me) to pretend the woman was suffering, and then to read the comments in that context. When you squint, the comments could be read as if written by amoral technicians, enthusiastically dissecting the capture of human misery, or something. I understand full well that this was not the case! But, as I said, it was funny, and easy, to pretend it was.

I enjoy this thread, and there is a lot of great stuff in it!

an old one - but i saw people getting nailed with a water cannon on the news the other day in almost the same spot this shot was taken.
