nice right hook

khan looks big for a 5'10 dude fighting at 140

salvia divanorum (nakhchivan), Sunday, 12 December 2010 04:13 (thirteen years ago) link

Aye I think he puts about 50 lbs on between weigh-in and fight :)

I remember thinking the same about Scott Harrison then I read an interview with Wayne McCullugh saying he could see Harrison growing during the fight.

Insane Clown 2 Electric Juggalo (onimo), Sunday, 12 December 2010 04:17 (thirteen years ago) link

McCullough, even. I think.

Insane Clown 2 Electric Juggalo (onimo), Sunday, 12 December 2010 04:17 (thirteen years ago) link

Maidana tiring now, being picked off. Can't see Khan losing it.

Insane Clown 2 Electric Juggalo (onimo), Sunday, 12 December 2010 04:18 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah

chance of a ko as maidana forced to risk even as fatigue kicks in

but i wouldn't have guessed at the end of the first that he'd still be there in the tenth

salvia divanorum (nakhchivan), Sunday, 12 December 2010 04:20 (thirteen years ago) link

uh :)

Insane Clown 2 Electric Juggalo (onimo), Sunday, 12 December 2010 04:20 (thirteen years ago) link

Dunno how Khan's still standing here tbh - not as chinny as I thought.

Insane Clown 2 Electric Juggalo (onimo), Sunday, 12 December 2010 04:22 (thirteen years ago) link

mad respect for maidana

great fight

salvia divanorum (nakhchivan), Sunday, 12 December 2010 04:23 (thirteen years ago) link

lol @ Khan in the corner - the face of a man who's just taken a fucking kicking.

Next round's going to be awes - Maidana's arms are hanging off and Khan's out on his feet.

Insane Clown 2 Electric Juggalo (onimo), Sunday, 12 December 2010 04:23 (thirteen years ago) link

adrenaline might keep maidana going now

salvia divanorum (nakhchivan), Sunday, 12 December 2010 04:24 (thirteen years ago) link

Clever, if boring, round from Khan there. Took the sting out of it.

One to go and I still think Maidana needs a knockout.

Insane Clown 2 Electric Juggalo (onimo), Sunday, 12 December 2010 04:26 (thirteen years ago) link

oh fuck forgot this was on/at my parents' bit and their internet is essentially 56k though named 10mb or some shit.

rappa ternt sagna (jim in glasgow), Sunday, 12 December 2010 04:27 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah has to be ko from maidana

salvia divanorum (nakhchivan), Sunday, 12 December 2010 04:27 (thirteen years ago) link

i'd give him about 2/7 chance of getting it

salvia divanorum (nakhchivan), Sunday, 12 December 2010 04:28 (thirteen years ago) link

Khan running away or holding in close :(

Insane Clown 2 Electric Juggalo (onimo), Sunday, 12 December 2010 04:30 (thirteen years ago) link

even the few minutes i caught were more than i expected from khan - who i think is a total wank.

rappa ternt sagna (jim in glasgow), Sunday, 12 December 2010 04:31 (thirteen years ago) link

khan about as beat up a winner as you'll see

salvia divanorum (nakhchivan), Sunday, 12 December 2010 04:31 (thirteen years ago) link

Ah well. Great fight and I suppose Khan was smart in the end - he's not going to endear himself to an American audience by running away for the last three rounds of a title fight.

Probably Khan by at least three rounds despite Maidana having all the late momentum.

I'm all for a rematch no matter how it's scored.

Insane Clown 2 Electric Juggalo (onimo), Sunday, 12 December 2010 04:33 (thirteen years ago) link

tbh i was really impressed with khan from seeing just the end. i hate him but he totally took maidana full gunning him.

rappa ternt sagna (jim in glasgow), Sunday, 12 December 2010 04:38 (thirteen years ago) link

Score Cards 114-111 114-111 113-112.

Early knockdown + deducted point made all the difference. As did Khan somehow staying on his feet in the 10th.

In other news Matt Skelton has been jailed for five months for giving a false name when caught speeding.

yeah, newfound respect for khan

salvia divanorum (nakhchivan), Sunday, 12 December 2010 04:40 (thirteen years ago) link

fight of the year, and kudos to the judges for not favoring the house fighter in either HBO bout. I had Khan by a point, but was iffy on one of the rounds I gave Maidana.

Matt Armstrong, Sunday, 12 December 2010 04:41 (thirteen years ago) link

Both fighters are must see TV and should be rewarded with big money fights.

Matt Armstrong, Sunday, 12 December 2010 04:41 (thirteen years ago) link

while Kahn showed a great deal of heart, he still is extremely hittable and his chin ain't iron by any stretch.

Matt Armstrong, Sunday, 12 December 2010 04:43 (thirteen years ago) link

Khan's the man! Amir proves he's the real deal after surviving one of the most awesome boxing rounds of recent history The most cynical city in the civilised world was on the edge of its seat, holding its breath as a great British boxer came through hell to claw victory from a fight of epic gallantry.

congrats to daily mail for finding a way to overdo it

salvia divanorum (nakhchivan), Monday, 13 December 2010 00:48 (thirteen years ago) link

Do the british tabs coddle Haye as well, or have they finally had enough?

Matt Armstrong, Monday, 13 December 2010 00:58 (thirteen years ago) link

had enough until two weeks before his next pushover fight, or until he gets a klitschko in which case the jingoism will be crazy

salvia divanorum (nakhchivan), Monday, 13 December 2010 01:04 (thirteen years ago) link

I'd take either Klitschko to knock him out in short time.

So tired of "top" fighters never fighting. Haye has fought at heavyweight four times (three if you ignore Audrey) since his last cruiserweight fight against Maccarinelli in March 2008. At a push he'll fight another twice before retiring next November. Mayweather's had six fights in five years.

Maybe I'm misremembering but when I were a lad it seemed like there were big title fights on all the time.

three weeks pass...

Former British boxing champion Gary Mason has died in a cycling crash in south London.

:(

Found at last night. Always used Mason as a punchline about terrible heavyweights with size and nothing else but this is really sad, he was a loveable guy.

two months pass...

Martinez vs. Dzinziruk tonight on HBO. The left that Martinez put on Paul Williams is, no exaggeration, one of the best punches you'll ever see (below.) Dzinziruk's undefeated and people talking up the fight say good things about his skills but honestly the stuff I've dug up didn't impress me at all & his record is a bunch of people nowhere near Martinez's league; Martinez has come from good-fighter to great-fighter over the last few years. The only thing working against him is his age, he's 36, but have a look at the Williams fight. The knockout's after the five minute mark and is seriously just a beautiful, terrifying punch.

I appreciate the boxing fandom on ILX but every time this thread gets bumped I admit I always hope it's news on May/Pac. Fight's got to happen but damn it's taking long enough.

he actually took the crown off after he learned Williams wasn't dead, as it was the crown for becoming King of Killing Paul Williams

Dzinziruk probably has the best jab in boxing, interesting to see how Sergio adjusts to that.

Matt Armstrong, Saturday, 12 March 2011 17:56 (thirteen years ago) link

opening bout, Lee vs. McEwan here (which announcers keep pointing out is stylistically Freddie Roach vs. Kronk Gym, which is kinda cool), is good action

I almost started a Freddie Roach appreciation thread a week or so ago. He's my chosen successor to Fred (Mr.) Rogers as my Real American Hero. Somethin about those Freds.

decided to stream cotto/mayorga. I really don't know anything about them, but cotto looks like a clearly superior fighter to me

Sergio. Fucking. Martinez. That's two sensational performances in a row. At 35/36. This dude is so goddamn exciting to watch, that hands-at-waist stalking stance...great night of fights on HBO.

five gone cats from Boston (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Sunday, 13 March 2011 05:04 (thirteen years ago) link

Pirog is the only guy I see having a chance against him at middleweight.

Matt Armstrong, Sunday, 13 March 2011 06:07 (thirteen years ago) link

Kirkland would make for an interesting fight. But Martinez is in his own zone right now. That stance he fights from is just so instantly exciting. None of this cruise-control-until-shit-gets-heavy garbage. Want to write him fan letters to thank him for not fighting like an asshole. But both HBO fights were great tonight! Caught those instead of Cotto-Mayorga, did anybody catch that one?

five gone cats from Boston (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Sunday, 13 March 2011 11:54 (thirteen years ago) link

Watching the Martinez fight just now. The guy is oozing class and confidence. Dzinziruk comes out all "I'm taking this fight to you and closing down the ring" and Martinez is delighted with it.

lol @ Dzinziruk's corner - he's still dizzy from a 5th round knockdown and they're telling him he won the round.
