x-post, tiny bit on the edges.

I'm sure the 22 hour wait for the answer was worth it :)

Sorry, just realised we've been back for months and I'm not showing these things off.

leo tldrstoy (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 10 December 2010 09:21 (thirteen years ago) link

These are great Almanac, are you on flickr, wouldn't mind looking through the rest!

Ah yes sorry: http://www.flickr.com/photos/54844770@N08/sets/72157625147567166/

We took 8,000 but there's only about 130 in the flickr set.

leo tldrstoy (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 10 December 2010 11:14 (thirteen years ago) link

Just 8,000? Could've made an effort :)

Cheers, will have a look.

I'll do a couple more here at some point, when I've found ones that are interesting to other people. Most of them are just sunsets and zebras' arses.

Woah, is that a bendy track or a moving exposure?

btw thanks guys! The bloke in the hat has got impala shit on his tongue. He posed like that and we're still not sure why. The feller in the background was sick of waiting for us and went up a tree, as you do.

The bloke in the hat has got impala shit on his tongue.

I just thought it was another guys head in the background and it was a composition fluke!

Also, polar bear in the desert = global warming fact!

That's the Sowa Pan, a huge giant massive bloody wad of salt in the middle of nowhere except it has polar bears.

Looked at your set today, so many great shots and after i calmed down from getting insanely jealous, i promised myself i'd do this within a year.
How long were you there?

not_goodwin, Friday, 10 December 2010 21:36 (thirteen years ago) link

A month, but about 2/3 of that was on safaris. Sooo worth doing. I can give you loads and loads of advice btw.

leo tldrstoy (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 10 December 2010 21:41 (thirteen years ago) link

Please do, there's a million sites out there, but it'd be better getting info from someone who's actually done it.
Ive added you as a contact on flickr.

not_goodwin, Friday, 10 December 2010 22:21 (thirteen years ago) link

Ace. ilxmail me through this account too, if you like. I'll do you a quick rundown in a few days (going away this weekend) and you can keep flinging questions at me.

what's a moving exposure? anyway, it's a bendy track.

RR, Friday, 10 December 2010 23:57 (thirteen years ago) link

d'oh I meant you were moving the camera while the shutter was open, but you didn't so

leo tldrstoy (Autumn Almanac), Saturday, 11 December 2010 00:01 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm a little embarrassed to include this one, given the subject matter, but I really like the result.
I use toys quite often when I'm trying to come up with new lighting and portraiture ideas.
Also this has been post-processed with a fairly heavy b&w filter in LightRoom.

nice photo treefell.

RR, Sunday, 12 December 2010 18:10 (thirteen years ago) link

Wy embarrassed? Toys are great to work with, especially when you want to try things with human subjects but don't have the patience.

Michael Jones, Monday, 13 December 2010 11:45 (thirteen years ago) link

I did say a little embarrassed.
I really like the photo. I just thought people might find a picture of a couple of plastic toys slightly odd.
Turns out I'm not the only person to do this...

Oh and thanks for the positive feedback regarding the photo.

treefell, Monday, 13 December 2010 15:32 (thirteen years ago) link

Nothing to be embarrassed about treefell, that shot has great lighting, and as AA said, great to practice on too.

Oh gosh. I'm letting the side down here, aren't I? Barely took the 40D out this month, even for Snowpocalypse Part Deux.

Still, I have a new toy - Lensbaby 3G...

I like that, RR.
Should we start a new thread for 2011? It's probably about time for one.

Here are a few pictures I took during xmas hols. I only took about 20 photos the entire 17 days I was away visiting family. I intended to take more, but... it's too cold to be outside for long in Edmonton in December and my dog will only pose for so long.

Does anyone have any tips/tricks for dealing with light pollution? Usually the sky in my nighttime photos comes out DARK RED. I have figured out how to kind of sort of maybe fix this in LR/Photoshop but is there a way of dealing with light pollution when taking the actual photo?

salsa shark lives near Tron.
Great shots, what & where are those btw?

Also the light pollution thing, could be white balance, but you can alter that in Lr, so i er dunno.

agree on the new thread, tis time.

not_goodwin, Wednesday, 12 January 2011 03:12 (thirteen years ago) link

what a moving photo, meisenfek

not_goodwin, the buildings comprise Edmonton's Muttart Conservatory. Each pyramid houses a different 'zone' of plants (desert, tropical, temperate, and a changing exhibit). It's a super place.

I did find that adjusting the w/b in LR helped with the light pollution (tbh was too cold to stand around fiddling with it while taking the photos). Though looking through other flickr photos tagged with Muttart Conservatory, I saw a couple nighttime shots that made interesting use of light pollution (here and here)

salsa shark, Wednesday, 12 January 2011 16:44 (thirteen years ago) link

In post, aside from adjusting white balance, you could try working with the color sliders in LR - drop the red and see how that affects the rest of the image, etc.?

AFAIK, there's no in-camera/exposure solution - that's why astrophotographers basically have to be in the middle of nowhere.
