Not a very interesting or insightful one though.

No it's not jon it's an unnecesary observation that you're only making too incite racial discussion.

Moka, Tuesday, 7 December 2010 18:44 (thirteen years ago) link

But thats about as arbitrary and stupid as saying, "I'm sbing anyone who complains about not enough rap on these lists".

Yes, that's exactly my intent, you're on to me.

My point was just that Rolling Stone's lists are usually populated by old white guys and I was pleasantly surprised to see this year's top ten much less so. Totally a valid point.

Ehmm no it's not, sbing about different music opinions is not valid, sbing about trolling is. What kind of answer are you honestly expecting with your comment? Are you inferring RS takes race into consideration when making votes for their best of the year?

Moka, Tuesday, 7 December 2010 18:49 (thirteen years ago) link

Whatever dude. I'm not sure you understand what trolling is.

at first glance that rolling stone singles list looks like something someone on ilm could come up with. maybe without the tom petty and the stones. and jakob dylan.

sad that peter wolf didn't make the singles list.

According to wikipedia:

A troll is someone who posts inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room, or blog, with the primary intent of provoking other users into a desired emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.

Hey! your comment qualifies!

Moka, Tuesday, 7 December 2010 18:53 (thirteen years ago) link

Hey! No it doesn't! But hey, you SBed me so hopefully enough other people agree with you that I'll be out of your hair with my inflammatory comments.

one pretty obvious guy in the obvious (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 18:57 (thirteen years ago) link

His comment here about Rolling Stone is not "off-topic"

curmudgeon, Tuesday, 7 December 2010 20:08 (thirteen years ago) link

Or inflammatory or extraneous given the history of that magazine.

curmudgeon, Tuesday, 7 December 2010 20:09 (thirteen years ago) link

claiming that if the damn quietus list came out with waka on it would be met with "wow, unexpected! good look!" instead of "smh at you damn multicultis" is strictly bs

― banshun, Tuesday, December 7, 2010

Those darn multicultis. Because of them this thread is just dominated by ballots of critics forced to vote due to political correctness for Waka, Gucci, Currency and for dancehall, Congolese rumba, reggaeton and old African-American soul singers. Poor Salem and Arcade Fire, done in by multicultis.

fwiw ilxor's (i think it was him?) argument upthread doesnt wash for me really. or its just a really misleading way of phrasing it

i was just responding to how doran described his own taste \oO/ but then id take waka & roots over freddie gibbs so

who knew that RS was really into random ass nicki minaj songs

gimme schefter (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 20:57 (thirteen years ago) link

iirc, Rolling Stone leaves five slots open on their list, to be filled in by putting an intern's iPod on shuffle and slotting in the first 2010 song that comes up

one pretty obvious guy in the obvious (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 21:01 (thirteen years ago) link

that nicki minaj song was reviewed by pfork btw

lol, cuz pitchfork never reviews random songs that no one cares about

gimme schefter (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 21:10 (thirteen years ago) link

never said that, there does appear to be some consensus around that track tho

from FACT's list

At some point last winter what existed of the original record was semi-abandoned, Darkstar ceased being a production duo and – by adding a full-time vocalist, James Buttery – became a fully fledged band; dance music made way for melancholy, experimental synth-pop.

what is "experimental" about darkstar?

also, 0_o at darkstar being no. 5 on their (often interesting) year-end list.

I wrote a few blurbs for the MySpace Top 50. I certainly am not gonna cosign all their selections, but this is definitely the best looking year end list I've ever seen:

haha it took me scrolling down a few entries to realize they did special graphics for each album and that every album on the list didn't have coincidentally similar aesthetics.

<333 whiney's blurbs for the myspace list, which still has some looool moments (circa survive & b.o.b. in the top ten) but is altogether a nice change of pace

Rhapsody Best 50 tracks of the year:

http://blog.rhapsody.com/2010/12/boytracks2010.html

Rhapsody Best albums, #31 to 50 (more to come obviously):

http://blog.rhapsody.com/2010/12/boyalbums2010.html

(My picks had some bearing on both the singles and albums lists, but not a lot. And none at all on albums 31 to 50, I guess.)

Actually looks like you can now click through at that Rhapsody album link to get to #s 1 through 30. (Fwiw, the two I wrote blurbs about when they came out are not ones I like much.)

xhuxk, Tuesday, 7 December 2010 23:09 (thirteen years ago) link

So both Rolling Stone and Spin have Jamey Johnson at #5. Sorry, had to point that out.

pretty wild that this Kanye record is the first record since, like, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot to really getting the indie sites to agree that the major labels sometimes make records better than we do

that arcade fire record = zzzzzzzzz
