By chance, just came across these - old Kerrang! album of the year lists.
Some properly surprising choices in the 80s.

Even baby boomer Leftsetz didn't like the Elton John and Leon Russell. That must have been owner Jan Wenner's choice.

curmudgeon, Tuesday, 7 December 2010 16:12 (thirteen years ago) link

That's the worst list so far.

Listening through the Fact list and while they can be spot on at times they do like shome shonk as well. That Fantastic Mr Fox tune sound like something someone found down the back of an MP3 blog in 2006.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 7 December 2010 16:14 (thirteen years ago) link

i'm really pleased to see dipset's "salute" getting repped for on the fact list

lex lex lex lex lex on the track BOW (lex pretend), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 16:16 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah that's great, although if they don't rep for Warrior One & Lady Chann's King Riddim then they are spectacularly failing their people.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 7 December 2010 16:19 (thirteen years ago) link

i actually like the rolling stone list better than a lot of the indie-leaning sites!

think that's the first i've seen taylor on a year-end list (yay)

matt have you heard doorly & lady chann's "the one"? even better for my money.

lex lex lex lex lex on the track BOW (lex pretend), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 16:21 (thirteen years ago) link

rolling stone honestly the one i like most so far. (not the same as one i'd like to check out most of)

purblind snowcock splattered (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 16:22 (thirteen years ago) link

ok sorry must have glazed over the top 3, f u rolling stone

purblind snowcock splattered (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 16:23 (thirteen years ago) link

remove the top 5, invert it and its a+

purblind snowcock splattered (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 16:24 (thirteen years ago) link

black keys album isn't a terrible choice for a rock mag to get behind

matt have you heard doorly & lady chann's "the one"? even better for my money.

Didn't really like that one but I'm blaming the producer. She works so much better over house/funky/dancehall crossover than lairy blokestep.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 7 December 2010 16:28 (thirteen years ago) link

"the one" isn't that lairy. i think it's just a lot tighter as a song. my favourite 2010 lady chann thing is prob her "hold yuh" vocal though, "feel calm".

her next single "treble to your bass" is kind of toddla t-style banging - there'll be a marcus nasty remix too...

lex lex lex lex lex on the track BOW (lex pretend), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 16:30 (thirteen years ago) link

It might be that I'm not interested in tight songs from her, particularly, I just want her to ferociously let rip. That Gyptian track showcases a soft side I didn't know she could pull off though, good stuff. Looking forward to the single you mention as well.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 7 December 2010 16:34 (thirteen years ago) link

the crazy high ranking overall for The National is sheer over-compensation for their previosu 2 albums' placings it's like the Lord Of The Rings films at the Oscars.

piscesx, Tuesday, 7 December 2010 16:36 (thirteen years ago) link

Not all they're cracked up to be, fwiw:

27. Peter Wolf - Midnight Souvenirs
23. Elizabeth Cook - Welder
16. Kid Rock - Born Free
12. John Mellencamp - No Better Than This
09. Eminem - Recovery

That said, don't see how the RS list is worse than any other ones on this thread.

xhuxk, Tuesday, 7 December 2010 16:37 (thirteen years ago) link

it's on youtube already.

between them, lady chann and cooly g are responsible for like 50% of my twitter timeline consisting of "kmt"

xps

that eminem album is the worst (& i kinda-like everything through album #4 or so)

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 16:39 (thirteen years ago) link

maybe im just excited by seeing rick ross on a list, as he isn't part of the BERKD 'rap' crit hierarchy

purblind snowcock splattered (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 16:40 (thirteen years ago) link

idk i think that's score one for "rap" crit hierarchy - rick ross deserves to be on no list

take big boi away and it could be DREK

the BAWSE was the best thing on the only supposedly perfect record of the century.

purblind snowcock splattered (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 16:42 (thirteen years ago) link

if by the BAWSE you mean MINAJ

lex lex lex lex lex on the track BOW (lex pretend), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 16:42 (thirteen years ago) link

ok second best.

purblind snowcock splattered (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 16:42 (thirteen years ago) link

But people's dainty sensitivities can cope with Kid Rock destroying all of black culture and history by being placed above Big Boi?

And Black Keys are a bad choice for a rock magazine to make, though not as bad as Elton John, John Mellencamp, The Roots, Maximum Balloon etc etc.

Carl Jung Jeezy (Doran), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 16:49 (thirteen years ago) link

actually The Roots p otm for a rock magazine to make? it has fucking joanna newsom, the dirty projectors and a band of 'real' instruments on it.

purblind snowcock splattered (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 16:51 (thirteen years ago) link

also being butthurt is not going to make people read yr site.

purblind snowcock splattered (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 16:52 (thirteen years ago) link

And Black Keys are a bad choice for a rock magazine to make

this makes NO sense, they are just about a perfect choice for the "rolling stone demographic" as much as, say, liars/swans are solid choices for the "quietus demographic" -- feeling like you are just out to disagree w/ me ;_;

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 16:53 (thirteen years ago) link

Kid Rock destroying all of black culture

kid rock's not a "rapper" anymore, he's gone "country," didn't ya know?

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 16:53 (thirteen years ago) link

Re: The Roots. I meant more that it's a terrible fucking record as is Black Keys - especially if it's being chosen because of a demographic. The same percentage of our readers hate Salem as people here do. What's the point of chosing a list by second guessing what your readers like?

I'm just traumatized because of the number of tranquilizers I took at ATP. My butt will be back to normal tomorrow.

Carl Jung Jeezy (Doran), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 17:02 (thirteen years ago) link

Sorry, but that Roots record is by no means "terrible".

All the indie-baiting songs that got the record buzz are pretty terrible, but the rest of the record is really good.

one pretty obvious guy in the obvious (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 17:04 (thirteen years ago) link

Roots is the nuts. Ok maybe the second worst Roots records but its like picking yr favourite child when all ten of them are AWESOME (plus the tipping point child.)

purblind snowcock splattered (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 17:05 (thirteen years ago) link

drugs are bad, mmmkay?

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 17:12 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, I agree with you today.

Does everyone like The Roots then? You really do learn something new every day.

Carl Jung Jeezy (Doran), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 17:16 (thirteen years ago) link

me != everyone.

purblind snowcock splattered (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 17:17 (thirteen years ago) link

they are next up on my 'band i should stop forgetting exist' list

modrić in paradise (blueski), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 17:17 (thirteen years ago) link

but yeah they are the most consistent musicians of the past twenty years and people who don't like them or ?uestlove* are savages.

*in part responsible for two of the best two records of the past decade, voodoo and new amerykah

purblind snowcock splattered (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 17:18 (thirteen years ago) link

Not to drag out another hoary old trope, but I often wonder how many people that hate the Roots really just hate the cult surrounding them. I mean, hate on some of the cring-worthy lyrics all you want, but these guys are astonishing musicians when they want to be.

one pretty obvious guy in the obvious (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 17:21 (thirteen years ago) link

From what I can see 2010 has had no more unjustly overlooked record so far than Nina Nastasia's sublime 'Outlaster', which hasn't appeared anywhere at all yet.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 7 December 2010 17:23 (thirteen years ago) link

Bit too smooth, wholesome and sophisticated for me... although I do still have about three albums by them and I agree with you about New Amerykah.

(In fact I don't think it's terrible at all but it didn't really stand out for me.)

Carl Jung Jeezy (Doran), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 17:23 (thirteen years ago) link

Sorry XP.

Carl Jung Jeezy (Doran), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 17:23 (thirteen years ago) link

album i like not appearing itt: Delorean

modrić in paradise (blueski), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 17:25 (thirteen years ago) link

What's wrong with a rap band being sophisticated? /outright trolling

Also listen to Do You Want More???!?!? or Game Theory or Rising Down and you won't be thinking "smooth" or "wholesome".

purblind snowcock splattered (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 17:25 (thirteen years ago) link

From what I can see 2010 has had no more unjustly overlooked record so far than Nina Nastasia's sublime 'Outlaster', which hasn't appeared anywhere at all yet.

yeah surprised at this - though having said that, while i fucking love the album, it's more "bobbing around the lower reaches of my top 20" than a show-in for any ballot i put together

lex lex lex lex lex on the track BOW (lex pretend), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 17:27 (thirteen years ago) link

smooth wholesome & sophisticated (esp sophisticated) are the best things abt the roots ... weaknesses are pretty much black thought's lyrical stylings imo

lotta diamonds ... but prolly more display names (deej), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 17:27 (thirteen years ago) link
