history of rock music crit to thread.

"who would truly prefer white guys making light of black music and culture to actual hip-hop?"

people who don't listen to hip-hop.

scott seward, Monday, 6 December 2010 22:13 (thirteen years ago) link

i liked the salem album a bunch, but i can't think of any list i would put it on. maybe my "records i like that other people find offensive or horrifying or dreadful" list. or my "poseur doofuses that i have loved" list.

scott seward, Monday, 6 December 2010 22:16 (thirteen years ago) link

wld rather read scott's poseur doofus poll than all the other polls on this thread

So, what you're saying is, I should pretend to like hip hop stuff at random and lie about it so as not to appear racist to some lunatic on the internet?

"who would truly prefer white guys making light of black music and culture to actual hip-hop?"

This is pure tautology. Unless of course Mulatu Astatke, Ali Farka Toure, Toumani Diabate, Gil Scott Heron, Janelle Monae, Ty Bulmer and P.O.S. are all white guys.

Carl Jung Jeezy (Doran), Monday, 6 December 2010 22:28 (thirteen years ago) link

Or let me put it this way: if you think black history and culture is interchangeable with hip hop, then it's you who is racist.

Carl Jung Jeezy (Doran), Monday, 6 December 2010 22:30 (thirteen years ago) link

I am kind of disappointed that everyone ignored my blatant trolling, tbh

clearly I'm slipping

Yeezy reupholstered my pussy (DJP), Monday, 6 December 2010 22:34 (thirteen years ago) link

We should tell people who haven't been following ILM this year to just keep up with this thread. It's turning into a redux of every argument that people have had this year.

Matt DC, Monday, 6 December 2010 22:35 (thirteen years ago) link

I don't think we ever successfully jammed together the "Janelle Monae tries too hard, what a joke" argument with the "I like this 'Pretty Girl Bag' song" argument; I'd be game for running those together.

Yeezy reupholstered my pussy (DJP), Monday, 6 December 2010 22:37 (thirteen years ago) link

^^^ Best mashup since the Girl Talk album amirite?

Matt DC, Monday, 6 December 2010 22:40 (thirteen years ago) link

you're overanalyzing a bit here

So, what you're saying is, I should pretend to like hip hop stuff at random and lie about it so as not to appear racist to some lunatic on the internet?

i didnt say you should pretend to like more hip-hop -- only that salem at #2 was kinda lame (considering it draws a good deal from, to generalize, southern hip-hop from the last decade or so). anyway, i'm glad your tastes and those of your staff are fully and accurately represented. like i said, i think it's a great list, salem aside

This is pure tautology. Unless of course Mulatu Astatke, Ali Farka Toure, Toumani Diabate, Gil Scott Heron, Janelle Monae, Ty Bulmer and P.O.S. are all white guys.

thank you, i realize that there are additional black musicians on your list -- that wasn't my point

Or let me put it this way: if you think black history and culture is interchangeable with hip hop, then it's you who is racist.

never said black history and culture were interchangeable with hip-hop, that's funny though!

Since a bunch of this thread comes from other websites and periodicals, maybe you should give up on much of the internet

The Reverend, Tuesday, 7 December 2010 10:34 (thirteen years ago) link

i kind of feel all of these proper EOY lists are just a way to kill time until the ilx one, which i'm sure will have many smh moments but in the main tends to be way way better than anything else. who else placed both electrik red and the-dream in last year's top 5? with taylor swift winning the trax list?

lex lex lex lex lex on the track BOW (lex pretend), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 10:35 (thirteen years ago) link

Ha! I'd already forgotten that Taylor won the tracks list.

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 10:37 (thirteen years ago) link

xpost ^^^ Yeah I feel this way. Inadvertent archival ILM review capsules are the best also.

TBH I'm always surprised that people focus so much on the lists themselves when to my mind the review capsules are the more interesting bit. Although TBH that's really "potentially". In practice they're often depressingly inadequate, esp. for the stuff i like.

Tim F, Tuesday, 7 December 2010 10:39 (thirteen years ago) link

Looking for the results thread, I realized that musically started the noms process the second week of December (the 8th to be exact). Where's she at this year?

yeah i haven't seen her post, like, since that thread -- was wondering if you or i or both of us would have to take it over again

and ranked on position (Amazon.co.uk all got 10.5th place.

1 Arcade Fire - The Suburbs
2 Beach House - Teen Dream
3 LCD Soundsystem - This Is Happening
4 These New Puritans - Hidden
5 Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy

More interesting 751 slots has produced 323 albums. BUT if you take out everything that only has one vote (180 albums) you reduce the number only 142 albums filling those 571 slots.
