ive been banned since you got in the tumblr game, but have been watching from the sidelines.

you seem really concerned with how many people are reblogging you!!! and i mean, you go to the hard work of making creative, original shit so yeah you'd like to know its getting out there, but you should just enjoy making them IMO. there is no explanation for what will catch on and what won't. except for nudity. people like/reblog nudity pretty reliably.

How many followers do you have? cause that's way more key to getting more re-blogs and likes and shit than trying to re-create the creepy-cat magic.

here's how i got the ball rolling on three frames tho (now at 14,500 followers):

after like a month of posting, i started using tumblr's search function. when i had a week of posts from Harold and Maude, I searched for stuff that was tagged with "Harold and Maude" "Bud Cort" etc. I found people who had recently posted H+M stuff and started following them. Then i found H+M posts with dozens or even hundreds of likes and reblogs on them and followed every single person who liked/reblogged harold and maude stuff. then i liked (couldn't reblog due to my tumblr's strict format) all their recent posts as they showed up in my feed.

is this a waste of time? yes and no. a lot of those people never noticed "3frames likes this" or "3frames started following you" once-- i can tell you that i stopped paying attention to new followers after i got to like 500. if some dude "likes" a dozen posts in a row, however, he'll get my attention. but eventually it got the ball rolling.

and yes, i was stuck with a few hundred morons clogging up my feed with tired memes, but after a few months i was able to start whittling it down.

i do enjoy making them of course, but i do enjoy it when they get out a little bit further. it's kinda pathetic but i think i just got really pumped when i had the one that got all the reblogs, like a couple thousand. I mean, after posting on barrylutz.com for over a year and getting an average of about 5-6 hits (2-3 usually from me checking to see if someone commented or something), it was really gratifying and a bit motivator to make more.

I've been doing a very smallscale version of what you did - i followed the people that were like the "tipping point" enablers on the creepy cat gif (like they would reblog it and immediately 10-20 other people would reblog it from them). but i didn't follow that up with a bunch of likes on their stuff afterward. and most of them didn't follow me back. i will give that a shot, it's a good idea. plus i like the idea of doing "weeks" targeted at certain subjects. i might prepare a small set of gifs on a few different themes and then go all out in the outreach campaign.

fuckyeahtrippyimages seems to be key, too. they reblogged something of mine earlier today and immediately 30-40 people reblogged it from them

yeah, go and follow those people, like their posts, etc. you can just unfollow them later if it doesn't yeild anything or if their posts are unbearable.

after you reached a certain point of followers, were you able to stop the obsessive likes/reblogs of other people and they just kinda naturally built up after that?

i really only did it for like a week or two, tbh. but this was a year and a half ago, aka still wild west days in tumblr history.
