in cricket, fast-bowlers derive almost all their power from their lower body, and batsmen generate powerful strokeplay by shifting their whole bodyweight into a shot

Do you get (m)any pint-sized NFL players? That sport seems more about the ability to memorise loads and loads of contingencies, be down for a scrap, be fit as hell and be fucking built.

There are positions where being short can be a real advantage, but those guys tend to be built really thick too - a running back is better off being on the short side than being too tall (imo), but you want him to have a thick butt and thighs. Defensive backs tend to be short and slighter of build, but that's because speed and fluidity of movement are prized - length/height are great if you can get it, but not at the expense of movement skills and footwork.

can I just say again: footwork. footwork footwork footwork. the bedrock upon which cricket and boxing are founded (arguably more so than soccer, which is more about general movement, territorial whereabouts of the whole player, at least until you get to the top level, where a bit of nifty footwork comes in very handy)
defensive backs are the ones who have to intercept incoming runners who r jinking this way n that, and running backs are running with the ppl bursting forward to try and leap for the ball, right?
― pro EVOO sucker (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 24 November 2010 01:55 (thirteen years ago) link
running backs are the 5'10, 220lb dudes who carry the ball
defensive backs are the nimble dudes who intercept passes/runners
― calpolaris (nakhchivan), Wednesday, 24 November 2010 01:57 (thirteen years ago) link
balance in football is crucially under-rated, an i thing that 'touch' gotta come under footwork too, so imma disagree with you riht there you carzy bastid. it's not called 'footbox' is it?
― Goths in Home & Away in my lifetime (darraghmac), Wednesday, 24 November 2010 01:57 (thirteen years ago) link
fucking cable
Defensive backs (defense) mostly defend forward passes, running backs (offense) are given the ball and then run forward with it with the intention of scoring.
― Megatherium americanum (Princess TamTam), Wednesday, 24 November 2010 01:58 (thirteen years ago) link
ah so running backs are explosive, hard to knock over etc
think i got the def back in one tho

― caek, Wednesday, 24 November 2010 01:59 (thirteen years ago) link
'touch' is foot to ball interface, for me 'footwork' is specifically foot-body-ground interface

btw I am a firm believer in all sports being good, worthy and exciting, with one (1) exception, but I am not going to say what it is - other than that, I find it petty and excruciating that ppl display their ignorance by slagging off an entire sport which probably relates a lot to sports they like but with a funky twist

Harrison's statement began with him quoting Benjamin Mays: 'The tragedy of life doesn't lie in not reaching your goal. The tragedy lies in having no goal to reach. It isn't a calamity to die with dreams unfilled, but it is a calamity not to dream. It isn’t a disgrace not to reach the stars, but it is a disgrace to have no stars to reach for.'
He added: 'I give David credit as I never expected him to hurt me as he did, but anyone could see it was a premature stoppage and I should have been allowed to carry on and ride out the rough patch, even if that meant I would have got KOd.
