Okay, this I have to hear.

Sara R-C, Friday, 25 July 2008 20:19 (fifteen years ago) link

Also, if I ever got married again, I would totally want Ned to officiate.

Maybe John and Dan could sing a duet.

Sara R-C, Friday, 25 July 2008 20:19 (fifteen years ago) link

Okay now I'm formulating the most fun Vow Renewal ceremony ever in my mind.

Sara R-C, Friday, 25 July 2008 20:20 (fifteen years ago) link

Dan, you're going to tell us about why "Lady in Red" is so sad to you, right?

Sara R-C, Friday, 25 July 2008 20:22 (fifteen years ago) link

Unfortunately it's not a funny story (I apologize for that upfront and warn you so that you aren't expecting me to unleash teh funniez halfway through):

In eighth grade, I had a huge huge huge huge crush on this girl in my class named L1z Chr1st3ns0n. One thing in particular was this sparkly red sweater she liked to wear a lot that looked completely awesome on her; whenever I saw her in it, I would mentally play the song "Lady In Red" and imagine us dancing/making out.

I had had some really awful experiences getting shot down by girls (THANKS R0BIN) so I was hesitant to ask her out, but one Friday I said to myself "screw it, I'm going to ask her if she wants to go out with me on Monday; enough of this nonsense".

She was killed in a stupid car-racing accident that Saturday, oddly enough just down the road from where my parents' house is.

This is why "The Lady In Red" signifies lost opportunity and unrealized teenage love to me.

HI DERE, Friday, 25 July 2008 20:25 (fifteen years ago) link

Damn.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 25 July 2008 20:27 (fifteen years ago) link

This is also why I get unreasonably upset when people make fun of that song.

HI DERE, Friday, 25 July 2008 20:27 (fifteen years ago) link

The flip side, of course, is the possibility that if I had asked her out and she'd said yes, I might have been in that car, too. Or she may not have been. Or maybe she would have totally been all "uh, NO" the way R0bin was.

Circumstance is a funny thing sometimes.

HI DERE, Friday, 25 July 2008 20:30 (fifteen years ago) link

Dan, :(

that's all I've got. but it's sincere.

Without wanting to seem trite and dismissive of the :(s this thread has ruled while I have been out drunking. (Found somewhere in London that does Sierra Nevada on tap)

and Ned, pls to marry me.

Upt0eleven, Friday, 25 July 2008 20:32 (fifteen years ago) link

Oh, that's so sad, Dan!

I knew her, a little bit. L1z was T4mmy R0send4hl's best friend; I was close friends with T4mmy's older sister, T1na in junior high. So... I knew L1z to talk to. (This is going to sound completely bizarre, I suppose, but whenever I've visited the cemetery she's buried in, I usually walk past her grave and give her some good thoughts.)

Sara R-C, Friday, 25 July 2008 20:32 (fifteen years ago) link

:(

tehresa, Friday, 25 July 2008 20:33 (fifteen years ago) link

Whoa, Ned just got a random proposal. This afternoon this thread is really having highs and lows.

Sara R-C, Friday, 25 July 2008 20:34 (fifteen years ago) link

Dan, did you really ask R0bin C. out? I HAD NO IDEA.

Sara R-C, Friday, 25 July 2008 20:34 (fifteen years ago) link

To bring us back to lulz, I should try to remember the horrific heartsick love song I wrote after she said no. It definitely contained the line "R000000bin/Why can't you see/How much you mean to me?" sung in a pre-"More Than Words" style.

HI DERE, Friday, 25 July 2008 20:38 (fifteen years ago) link

me at 13 = one incredibly embarrassing little dude

HI DERE, Friday, 25 July 2008 20:39 (fifteen years ago) link

Upt0eleven, Friday, 25 July 2008 20:42 (fifteen years ago) link

There's a reason I haven't been putting photos of me at 13 up in my latest Flickr flood.

(But as for everything else...go crazy.)

Sara R-C, Friday, 25 July 2008 20:44 (fifteen years ago) link

Thank God home computing was still at the IBM PC level or else I might have multitracked that embarrassment into something tangible.

I also remember wanting to dedicate "Broken Wings" by Mr. Mister to R0bin over the middle school radio station, but screwing up and dedicating "Kyrie" to her by accident. ugh

Sara R-C, Friday, 25 July 2008 20:48 (fifteen years ago) link

Ned Raggett, Friday, 25 July 2008 20:48 (fifteen years ago) link

Rubyredd, Friday, 25 July 2008 21:37 (fifteen years ago) link

Aw. :-) A good sign.

(And I have posted more old photos on that Flickr link so you all owe it to yourself to investigate.)

Ned Raggett, Friday, 25 July 2008 21:39 (fifteen years ago) link

Ned, did you post the link? I haven't looked at your flickr page in FOREVER.

Good luck meeting the future MIL, RR - if she has presents for you already, she sounds awesome!

Sara R-C, Friday, 25 July 2008 21:57 (fifteen years ago) link

I DID, thank you. But clearly I was too subtle:

You really have to basically stick things in front of my face these days to get me to see them, Ned.

So thank you!

You really have to basically stick things in front of my face these days to get me to see them, Ned.

You realize Dan is going to take this, run with this, and never let it go.
