Interview at the Quietus. Love this bit:

While rumours of the band splitting can easily be put to rest, some other tags can't be shifted so easily. Danger Days is possibly one of the boldest and most exuberant sheer rock records of 2010, but that won't be enough, you fear, to stop them from being dismissed as emo by the close-minded. Is that frustrating for the band? Because you could argue that using 'emo' as a catch-all term to describe your previous output is a bit of a misnomer anyway, so is…

"Thank you!" says Mikey excitedly, interjecting halfway through the question. "That's awesome…"

Gerard, meanwhile, pauses at length, before revealing: "I guess what bothered me about it, and made me so mad, was that it was lazy. It was such an easy way to take this band that's really special and unique, and give it a tag. Especially to tag it with shit that I abhor. That would infuriate me. So you're saying that what we do - the work we put into this, the 3am nights, the things we sacrificed - is this the same as this fucking record? This fucking band? You're out of your mind if you think these things are remotely close to each other."

"It made it easy to pick out which people are actually journalists and which people just go straight to your Wikipedia page," says Frank.

Back to Mikey: "Some of them will almost have this weird glow in their eyes when they say the word," he says, before impersonating an eager hack. "'I just said it'… it's like they're laying a mine in front of you."

"I don't think Eddie Vedder ever appreciated the word grunge," ponders Gerard, "but I don't think it bothers him anymore because he's still making music. Now granted they've been a band for 20 something years and we've almost been a band for 10, so I'm starting to understand - maybe - how he feels. Like, 'Oh, that crap is gone'. He's not dealing with people saying 'So, you sound like Candlebox, right?'"

All the band break out into laughter, as Gerard adds in disbelief. "Imagine him thinking about that? Fucking Candlebox."

Decent dudes, imo.

S.I.N.G. is generic

this * 10K. it isn't memorable, either. but (a) i'm not a fan of this band and, tbf, (b) the song is better than i expected. there's something distinctively "major-label" about the production/sheen, i think, but i can't put my finger on it (and maybe i'm hearing what i want to hear).

i am really happy about this album.

overrated ilx posters i have suggest-banned (c sharp major), Monday, 22 November 2010 19:18 (thirteen years ago) link

it's not perfect but it's pretty consistent. the ballads are kind of meh but scattered enough that you kind of just ignore them and wait for the next big glammy destroya to strike.

devendra banfart (jk), Monday, 22 November 2010 19:36 (thirteen years ago) link

Picking this up after work tonight, can't wait.

i am a terrible sucker for everything they do and would pretty much have been satisfied with 'ridiculous album concept, big pop-rock choruses, mandatory song about vampires' and-- it is that! but bigger!

c sharp major, Monday, 22 November 2010 20:47 (thirteen years ago) link

and more ridiculous!

and slightly less about vampires.

c sharp major, Monday, 22 November 2010 20:50 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah "Vampire Money" isn't really about vampires, it's making fun of the bands on the Twilight soundtracks. love this album!

some dude, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 15:51 (thirteen years ago) link

mcr only takes big blue dong money i guess (for their dylan cover in that hollywood abortion of watchmen)

devendra banfart (jk), Tuesday, 23 November 2010 17:07 (thirteen years ago) link

well yeah it's a silly beef to have, but i enjoyed gerard's justification in an interview about how he's basically a snob about how vampires are portrayed and thinks they should be gross and scary and not young and sexy

some dude, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 17:24 (thirteen years ago) link

only a few songs in but I may have a new favorite album of 2010

yeah "Vampire Money" isn't really about vampires

but see they have a vampire reference on every album, and, you know, i respect that in a band.

Finally listened the whole thing on the drive to Michigan last night, this is pretty goddamned great. I love this band.

two weeks pass...

I successfully introduced this to my kids as a possible substitute so we don't have to listen to Green Day on the way to kindergarten every day. Now it's, "Can we hear the Na-Na-Na song?" (Just hoping I don't get a note home about him yelling "fuck like a Kennedy!" on the playground.)

listened to "vampire money" three times in a row this morning, cranking the volume a little louder each time. my ears are still ringing. great album.

re vampire ..

my fave part is the bass drone at the end (don't get me wrong, the song is a total belter)

the whole album is so crisp and sharp (which for once i really think works .. ), and then at the very end they drop this almighty bass drone at the end as if to say, "yeah, we know .. "

f*ckin' love this album ..

post bottle of red wine, this can never be loud enough.

am always kinda surprised by the sustained love on this thread since a) i felt a little alone in my enthusiasm for the record at the time, iirc i was one of only a handful of people to vote for it in Pazz & Jop and the only ilxor and b) i haven't really gone back and listened to it as much as other people since then

You weren't the only ilxor, I'm pretty sure I voted for it too. I still get a kick out of it.

Yeah, no reason you would. Just checked, I voted it #7, between Marnie Stern and Killing Joke. Seems about right.

Tim F, Saturday, 5 October 2013 04:43 (ten years ago) link

i am glad you are here with me on this

there is something so natural and easy to the movement of the tune, that radio sweetness

also i will forever love the whole concept's art: http://varnishstudio.com/work/danger-days

the tracklist to the hits comp underlines for me that though they had a solid run of singles, they weren't really a singles band, except for in the Black Parade era, which is funny because that's when they made their most obvious Big Statement Album attempt.
