i gotta admire the "shitted on em" song with massive farty synths -- if you're gonna do it, just go all the way -- altho it still pales in comparison to the gorilla zoe song

I'm sure the "ruh, ruh, I'm a dungeon dragon" bit isn't meant to remind me of 'Walk The Dinosaur' by Was (Not Was), but it does.
― Matt DC, Wednesday, 17 November 2010 09:38 (thirteen years ago) link
this is another one spoiled by the modern malaise of endless moaning abt heavy burdens and haters and all the other pressures of a career YOU HAVENT EVEN HAD YET FFS, but on the plus side the sentimental softrock 80s vibe of the album is so consistent (dipsettish even) that fwiw it does kinda hold together and keep you involved - to the degree you're interested in being at least. okay for a guest-rapper's debut.

think she basically needs some alter-ego dressup/extinction level event type concept bullshit to play off next album.

agreed with rtc that she sort of needs to a concept to roll with for the whole album
only half way thru my first listen right now so no concrete thoughts yet
"did it on 'em" is crazy though

yeah this is ok - considering what i feared i'm pretty satisfied. also, i suspect that the various bonus tracks will go much harder, just from the titles.

If Nicki had emerged eight years ago, even four or five years ago, she'd have been amazing. As it is they've given her a debut album 3/4 full of complete slush. Destroy underwritten "stirring" rnb choruses in 2010.

― blogosfeer of a black planet (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 20 November 2010 20:17 (thirteen years ago) link
Thought this was gonna be more liker her mixtapes. most of it's:
DJ Sammy synth trance intro Brief Nicki verse about haters / she's the best"big" 2010 stirring/Rhianna/rock chorus with strings. Repeat
Drake verse is about the best thing here. Eminem is an angry dick. Disappointing.
― paulhw, Saturday, 20 November 2010 21:39 (thirteen years ago) link
yeah this is a total slog to get through. her career arc kinda reminds me of jadakiss, sick guest verses but meh albums.

though i'm not really disappointed as such with pink friday - i think maybe cuz my expectations dipped and fluctuated so much ahead of it, i'd definitely abandoned any hope of my dream minaj album that showcased everything i love about her happening, so i think i'm more relieved than anything that it's half-decent. what with the bonus trax there's definitely an acceptable album in here if you prune the more pointless songs, which is more than can be said for eg kanye west (and if we're talking about what an "interesting" "character" he is despite his album's flaws, how much more can that be said of nicki).

LOL at the NYT suggestion that we should consider Ke$ha a rapper now because she's no longer singing. Like she was singing before!
― Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 25 November 2010 14:20 (thirteen years ago) link
Good album. Nice balance between Nicki's pop side and her rapper side. (Like I'm an expert on that! OK, I like the balance between the two. If it had been all one or all the other, it could have been a bit of a chore to listen to the whole record in one go.) Superb use of samples too. I think I got more joy from the first listen to this than from any other 2010 pop album I've heard so far.
No bonus tracks on the copy I bought :(

didn't suggest that it made me LIKE the album more than i do - i think it's still largely disappointing given the level of raw talent and potential nicki has, although there are four-ish tracks i like ok on this, and adding in massive attack and one or two of the bonus tracks it makes for a decent EP.
