^^ jam city's "arpjam" on that mix is fucking insanely good, really hope that gets a release this year

Kingdom slapping the vocals from Ciara's "Ride" on top of "Every Time" was one of many highlights when I saw him a few nights ago.

big jeans (lou), Tuesday, 2 November 2010 00:05 (thirteen years ago) link

oh SHIT i'd've lost my shit at that

lex lex lex lex lex on the track BOW (lex pretend), Tuesday, 2 November 2010 00:09 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, he kind of had my jaw on the floor the whole time. :) Sorry to veer off-topic, but I have really treasured Kingdom's tracks, mixes and remixes this year. His monthly event here has been the source of many euphoric nights. Can't remember the last time I was inspired to go out so much.

big jeans (lou), Tuesday, 2 November 2010 00:43 (thirteen years ago) link

i get the fbook invites to those and EVERY TIME wish i could go. and i've never managed to catch kingdom over here either - once this year i got to interview him but on the night had a deadline crisis; the time after that i was in spain; and he's coming over in a couple of weeks, when i...will be in miami

AARGH

Oh good, the EP is on Spotify. INSTANT LOVE for "Wut" and "Showstoppa", WOW!

mike t-diva, Tuesday, 2 November 2010 10:36 (thirteen years ago) link

mike (and indeed everyone) should check out kingdom's stuff (esp "mind reader", "that mystic" and "fogs") - not exactly similar but approaching cut-up r&b vox/heavy bass from a different angle

lex lex lex lex lex on the track BOW (lex pretend), Tuesday, 2 November 2010 10:41 (thirteen years ago) link

actually i'll just bump his thread - Kingdom ft. Shyvonne - Mind Reader

lex lex lex lex lex on the track BOW (lex pretend), Tuesday, 2 November 2010 10:42 (thirteen years ago) link

I know "Mind Reader" quite well - Lex, you tipped me to it a few months back. Great track. Will try the other two.

mike t-diva, Tuesday, 2 November 2010 12:42 (thirteen years ago) link

single of the fucking year finally gets a release

single of the year? hm. i just heard it, and it is good. i can see where the processed vocals can be irritating/nervewracking after a while. tagged it to download later on emusic.

xpost whole Night Slugs catalogue is available on Spotify and that's so fucking sweet, just type label:"night slugs" in searchbox

this is very great except I want to say wut wut in the butt :(

dayo, Tuesday, 2 November 2010 14:14 (thirteen years ago) link

Wonder what popular internet phrase Girl Unit will use for his next single?

Number None, Tuesday, 2 November 2010 14:17 (thirteen years ago) link

LOL

Matt DC, Tuesday, 2 November 2010 14:23 (thirteen years ago) link

Deserved that

Number None, Tuesday, 2 November 2010 14:28 (thirteen years ago) link

dayo- I don't think that impulse is nearly as strong here as it is with, say, Trey Songz' "Bottoms Up" (Bottoms up, bottoms up/ stick it in your butt). :)

big jeans (lou), Tuesday, 2 November 2010 14:33 (thirteen years ago) link

^^ jam city's "arpjam" on that mix is fucking insanely good, really hope that gets a release this year

Don't know whether it will be released on its own but at least it will be officially available on the first Night Slugs comp.

willem, Monday, 8 November 2010 21:55 (thirteen years ago) link

i know lex loves them (not least as hes mates with them all) but can there just be a rolling nightslugs thread so there arent new ones started for these guys all the time?

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Wednesday, 10 November 2010 10:51 (thirteen years ago) link

This is pretty much the only Night Slugs thread isn't it? Mind Reader wasn't even on Night Slugs.

Don't think there's really much doubt that Lex sincerely loves all this stuff, he's not just street teaming his friends for the sake of it.

haha noooooooo that's all i'm gonna hear now

that + the james blake cover of feist = repeat bedtime listening atm

this is pretty dope

dayo, Monday, 15 November 2010 08:04 (thirteen years ago) link

even tho the use of literal firework sounds at the beginning & end of the track is both obvious and i believe carried over right from the drake song, it works really well w/ the deadboy remix -- its sort of like you're looking up in the sky and witnessing this really pretty thing -- it gives me the the same sort of feeling of intense romance in my chest that i get when i see the fireworks scene in 'adventureland'

thomas smangalter (J0rdan S.), Monday, 15 November 2010 08:04 (thirteen years ago) link

ok this crowd video of 'wut' is amazing, somehow it's even huger w/ fuzzy blown-out sound and shakycam, i want to be dancing right now.

not sure why i made the justice snark comment above, i don't know why i have inbuilt negativity towards this when actually anytime i open ableton i try and make music like this. think i have some contrarian feelings towards this just cos i live in london, but i like wut. agree with whoever said they wait for a rapper to come in, i feel a lot like this about lots of this kind of music.

agree about the comments about "what to do" with this music too...i've been in clubs where people "bounce" and it's extremely macho/tedious watching people posture...i guess if i went out to clubs where they play rap music it might be like that too but i dunno, maybe more fun.

I see what this is (Local Garda), Monday, 15 November 2010 14:00 (thirteen years ago) link

It's the R&B cut-ups that really make this IMO... it doesn't really feel very functional but that's fine.

Matt DC, Monday, 15 November 2010 14:08 (thirteen years ago) link

His remix of Lights On by Katy B is kind of horrible.

Matt DC, Friday, 19 November 2010 14:29 (thirteen years ago) link

Love Wut and Showstoppa but kind of think both sound like they're missing something. Wut gets boring at its length.

among the topics of discussion: which rapper girl unit would most like to hear over the top of these trax

lex lex lex lex lex on the track BOW (lex pretend), Wednesday, 24 November 2010 22:33 (thirteen years ago) link

Wow, the last four tracks on the Night Slugs label comp are really fantastic, especially Jacques Greene's 'Baby I Don't Know What You Want'. This sort of colourful space-funk sound works *so* much better for me than the more full-on thick-grey-line bass stuff that comes before it. I'm including 'Wut' in the former category obviously.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 1 December 2010 17:29 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah the optimum one really surprised me, given what his ep was like. you should hear the velour ep if you haven't, it's all technicolour off-kilter funk like that - you can tell why dâm-funk's a kindred spirit.

this is my favourite on the compilation though, soooo good - posted it in the dance partisans thread already but never sure how many people actually look in there

Really impressed by the few other Jacques Greene tracks I've heard, too. (<3<3<3 "Tell Me"!!)

His LuckyMe 12" was supposed to come out Monday but I'm not seeing anywhere to buy it yet.

big jeans (lou), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 17:43 (thirteen years ago) link

funny that the Greene track mis/re-interprets Ashanti's "Baby I don't know why..." from 'Foolish'

think i like the Kingdom, Egyptrixx (maybe filler-y to some but i like the relative oddness) and Velour tracks most (aside from 'Wut') but it's all good and will get bought.
