Terminal Boredoms (nakhchivan), Tuesday, 2 November 2010 00:02 (thirteen years ago) link

a google image search, originally, but it seems to come from this movie:

have you thought about making a 100-gif magnum opus where each gif is its own individual animation, but when placed in a specific order on a 10 x 10 grid so that they form a mega-gif?

Philip Nunez, Tuesday, 2 November 2010 00:21 (thirteen years ago) link

I have! Not 100 (10x10) gifs, exactly, but I've wanted to do a really big one with dozens of different pieces that fit together. The problem has just been hosting. Tumblr can't handle animated images wider than 500 pixels, let alone a megasaur gif combo. And my old barrylutz space wouldn't accommodate it well, either. And of course on ILX it wouldn't work (I think on some stylesheets it might look ok but I'm not sure, and in any case most people wouldn't be using the correct stylesheet and it would look different on everyone's monitors, etc)

Z S, Tuesday, 2 November 2010 00:34 (thirteen years ago) link

hm.. how's about the next 9 requests you get, try to configure it so that you can put them into a 3x3 brady-bunch style one?
you could do it as a table like:

<table>
<tr><td>1.gif</td><td>2.gif</td><td>3.gif</td></tr>
<tr><td>4.gif</td><td>5.gif</td><td>6.gif</td></tr>
<tr><td>7.gif</td><td>8.gif</td><td>9.gif</td></tr>
</table>

with the img src etc...
i guess that would mean each gif would have to have the same proportions and same number of frames.
haha sorry this would probably be much more work than fun.

Philip Nunez, Tuesday, 2 November 2010 00:42 (thirteen years ago) link

the proportions would be easy to do...the same number of frames would be a little difficult, maybe, but not impossible. But I think that even if animated gifs have the same number of frames (and timing of frames...you can set each frame to last as long as you want), that they'd still be out of sync with each other. I tried once to have a set of gifs that were coordinated with each other (I think I had something falling down through one frame and into the top of another), and found that the gifs start looping once they're done loading, instead of starting at the same exact moment, if that makes any sense.

Anyway, all of timing stuff is just a detail, but the main problem is where to put it. I could put it here on ILX, but I think the total width of all the images (say, three wide like you suggest) has to be less than a certain amount of pixels, or else it'll drop down the image to the next row? Like, for example, take this picture (350x420):

http://i52.tinypic.com/adjb5j.jpg

Here's 6 in a row, but I'm guessing it'll drop down into a new row on the 3rd or 4th image:

Z S, Tuesday, 2 November 2010 00:57 (thirteen years ago) link

I see two rows of three, but I think (I'm not sure?) that on a different computer with a bigger screen, you might see 4 on the top row and 2 on the bottom, and on a computer with a smaller screen, you might see three rows of two.

Z S, Tuesday, 2 November 2010 00:59 (thirteen years ago) link

is it possible to just make one big gif that is cut up into sections where each one is doing its own independent thing

markers, Tuesday, 2 November 2010 00:59 (thirteen years ago) link

sure, I think. actually, I'll try it miniature form in a second, to test it out.

Z S, Tuesday, 2 November 2010 01:12 (thirteen years ago) link

whoops, I forgot that 30 minutes earlier I wrote that the images start looping when they're individually done loading, instead of waiting for all of the images to load and start simultaneously. my memory is approximately 4.5 seconds long

I'm thinking about doing a bunch of these tbh. Yesterday I picked up The City by Frans Masereel, which is a series of 100 woodcuts illustrating city life in Weimar Germany from 1925 (also available for free here: http://www.nebulous-cargo.com/masereel/woodcuts/city1.html).

the gif tesselation upthread actually works well despite being (or because?) out-of-sync

Adrian Roosevelt "Adie" Mike (nakhchivan), Saturday, 6 November 2010 18:09 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah, I probably will! I have a few other commitments to take care of first (ILX Compilation 4 cover and a mini-comic that'll hopefully be printed and published by Justine+Jordan's Chance Press in a month or two. but then I'm thinking it would be neat to do ALL 100 of them and just put them on a new website.

Z S, Saturday, 6 November 2010 18:11 (thirteen years ago) link

whoops, xpost

Z S, Saturday, 6 November 2010 18:11 (thirteen years ago) link

whoa, that's weird, the tessellation actually goes in and out of sync! I watched it for a minute and on one cycle everything was perfectly lined up...and then it went back out of sync. That's strange because the timing for each of the tiles is exactly the same - same amount of frames, same timing (.1 second) for each frame. huh.

Z S, Saturday, 6 November 2010 18:14 (thirteen years ago) link

doesn't it depend on the filesize (hence loadting times) of the individual gifs?

Adrian Roosevelt "Adie" Mike (nakhchivan), Saturday, 6 November 2010 18:21 (thirteen years ago) link

though of course that isn't consistent, so each f5 gives a different pattern!

Adrian Roosevelt "Adie" Mike (nakhchivan), Saturday, 6 November 2010 18:23 (thirteen years ago) link

They start looping once they're done loading, yep, which explains why they're not in sync at the beginning. But what's weird is that they're looping at different speeds! Like, if the upper-left tile starts half a second earlier than the upper-right tile, it should continue to be half a second ahead no matter how long you look at it (since the two tiles have the same amount of frames and I set the speed at the same rate for all 9 images)...but after a while, the upper-left tile will start to only be .3 seconds faster, than .2, .1, then identical, then .1 slower, .2 slower, etc.

I have probably just written the most boring post ever posted on the internet. *champion*

Z S, Saturday, 6 November 2010 18:26 (thirteen years ago) link

the sync doesn't change once they're all loaded afaict....synched perfectly now actually (thanks to coolsloth)

Adrian Roosevelt "Adie" Mike (nakhchivan), Saturday, 6 November 2010 18:31 (thirteen years ago) link

it seemed to me there that it got in sync then fell out of it. You're the Steve Reich of gifs. Woaaaaah now it's on a crazy cycle moving across them. Well that's me sorted for my Saturday night entertainment.

forksclovetofu, Friday, 12 November 2010 16:38 (thirteen years ago) link

uh, i don't mean to jinx myself but I think the cat picture may be blowing up on tumblr, to a mild degree? I just posted it a while back and now a bunch of teenagers are reblogging it back and forth. I know this shouldn't be exciting but my iphone is buzzing with every reblog and it's getting more and more frequent. WEIRD

T-Rex's erotic imagination (Z S), Friday, 12 November 2010 17:49 (thirteen years ago) link

ok, not "blowing up" but 60 or so reblogs, which is way more than the 0-2 that I usually get!
