I just have this strong feeling that the light-up cross is going to be hung from the pinnacle of garages as the "nativity star" in neon creche scenes for the holidays. I wouldn't put ANYTHING past those people.

One Community Service Mummy, hold the Straightedge Merman (Laurel), Friday, 21 November 2008 18:51 (4 years ago) Permalink

I'm just trying to imagine the mindset of someone who sees a 5+ft light-up cross and thinks "IT'S PERFECT" but I am probably discounting the part where the person is earnestly browsing this site intending to make a purchase.

Black Seinfeld (HI DERE), Friday, 21 November 2008 18:53 (4 years ago) Permalink

they're taking it back.

Kerm, Friday, 21 November 2008 18:54 (4 years ago) Permalink

For instance: I'm kind of shocked there isn't one in this photo:

One Community Service Mummy, hold the Straightedge Merman (Laurel), Friday, 21 November 2008 18:55 (4 years ago) Permalink

the cross came later.

Kerm, Friday, 21 November 2008 18:57 (4 years ago) Permalink

Then there's the institutional level example -- this is about five blocks away from me (sorry about the small photo size):

J0hn, are you aware that
a) in America, there are vast numbers of people who like to put large collections of small lights with a Christmas holiday theme all over their lawns and houses
and
b) in the contemporary United States, there are vast numbers of people who have very little knowledge of history, and that the knowledge of religious fundamentalists in the interior West about the pre-civil rights era South might be more diminished than most?

what are these people saying - i'm going to burn my own house down? these might be dumb questions, but they're no dumber than the notion that a cross wrapped in holiday lights rather than with the lights fused to the cross is a vague, subtextual, public advertisement of the owner's enjoyment in appropriating racist symbols. or are you suggesting that someone would buy this for intimidation purposes. what are the mixed-race neighborhoods you imagine being the target market here?

gabbneb, Friday, 21 November 2008 19:03 (4 years ago) Permalink

Gabbneb, the idea of you schooling J0hn on these points is the best laugh I've had all day.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 21 November 2008 19:05 (4 years ago) Permalink

that's kind of the point here, Ned

gabbneb, Friday, 21 November 2008 19:06 (4 years ago) Permalink

sorry I'm not an itinerant OC/midwestern/Southerner, it's such a personal failing

gabbneb, Friday, 21 November 2008 19:07 (4 years ago) Permalink

Now I am SUPER doubting my take on this, because gabbneb is making sense to me. I wish it were coming from someone else, I really do, but...stopped clocks, once, etc.

oh nvr mind, I get it, at first it parsed like "mulattos be buyin' racist crosses!"

Black Seinfeld (HI DERE), Friday, 21 November 2008 19:15 (4 years ago) Permalink

I gotta agree with ethan here that KKK was not the first thing that sprang to mind when I saw this.

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 21 November 2008 19:16 (4 years ago) Permalink

I dunno what the people who buy them will be thinking, but the first thing that struck me was the KKK angle, and I was pretty gobsmacked.

emil.y, Friday, 21 November 2008 19:16 (4 years ago) Permalink

whether or not it is burning cross like enough is debatable... I don't give a shit what the intent behind it was

bnw, Friday, 21 November 2008 19:16 (4 years ago) Permalink

"pre-Civil Rights era South." Like nobody burns crosses for racial intimidation any more.

fwiw I agree as well, which is why my comments have been less "how could you find this racist?" and more "I didn't find it racist, now let's laugh at the rest of the stupid shit on this site"

Black Seinfeld (HI DERE), Friday, 21 November 2008 19:19 (4 years ago) Permalink

I think that lit lawn cross is along the same lines of accidental racism as "i.Beat Blaxx"

gabbneb to anybody who finds lit crosses on lawns a little wtf after a minute's reflection: "it's cool, they didn't mean anything by it"

gosh you're right gabs, a lit cross on a lawn in no way recalls crosses burning on lawns, it's just a bottle opener after all

but not without this retake:

"Without this cool wax platter Tallahassee I picked up for 8 dollars American at a beat basement goes by the name of 'The Cake Shop,' I never would have seen so deep into the dark, deranged heart of proletarian America."
