i find the film strangely comforting to watch when i am feeling distressed about stuff. something about michael's constant barking, the jazzy soundtrack, the long pauses and stilted dialogue...

Yeah, even the MST3K version of this is very tranquilizing to me.

Meanwhile, John McCain’s best friend for life, wee Sen. Lindsey Graham, is joining in, playing, as ever, the Torgo to McCain’s Master. He is joining in the filibuster threats and making sure that everyone knows that he blames Barack Obama for the attack in Benghazi.

ghost rider ftw

Announcing a brand new compilation that's looking for submissions... Manos: The Remix of Fate! Recently, Benjamin Solovey found a pristine work-print of the infamous bad film and has restored it for upcoming release on Blu-Ray and DVD. He also put up the soundtrack for free (pay what you wish) download on Bandcamp and the Free Music Archive under a BY-NC-SA license, which includes music cues and dialogue.

Happy Puppy Records would like to celebrate this release by asking the Creative Commons music community to download the soundtrack and remix it! Any genre, any style... just no explicit adult material please. By submitting, you agree to license your track under the same BY-NC-SA license. If you include outside samples in your remix, please ensure they are of a similar sharable license.

Send your remix via dropbox, wetransfer, soundcloud or email if it's less than 25 mbs. 320 Mp3s or FLACs only. Deadline for entries is October 1, 2013 so we can have it ready for Halloween, which will please the Master!

Seriously can't wait. It's both an absurd and wonderful thing that this has come about. I wish they'd found the original audio tracks as such (music separate from voiceovers/Foley) but let's face it, hearing it that muffled way is part of the whole damn charm.

Just letting you all know that Manos is screening at MOMA this weekend.

its time has come

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 4 November 2017 09:35 (six years ago) link

well, i gotta say... never seen it on the big screen! huh. is this the restoration that one guy was doing from a rare top-drawer print?

Doctor Casino, Sunday, 5 November 2017 01:57 (six years ago) link

MoMA is showing a DCP, so I assume so!

It's funny, it's part of this series:

https://www.moma.org/calendar/film/3890?locale=en

and I'm sure Club 57 showed mostly 16mm prints, while here it's almost all 35mm or digital. I saw The 10th Victim today.

On the 18th you can see Manos and Blade Runner 2049 at MoMA! Largest budget gap of all time.

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 5 November 2017 02:05 (six years ago) link

Hmmmmm looking at my calendar for the 16th, I just might have to skip it for All About Eve at Village East or Once Upon A Time In The West at FF, both already on my calendar. And a barroom screening of Whale Rider at Videology to wash it down.... an embarrassment of riches!

Doctor Casino, Sunday, 5 November 2017 02:18 (six years ago) link

Manos is on the 18th, not the 16th. (also tomorrow)

I consider it scandalous that FF is showing Once Upon A Time In The West digitally... it p much needs to be seen on a big screen every time, but in 35. You might be OK with a Bluray if those days are gone. :(

something about this just seems like cultural revisionism, a multi-level (insular) repurposing of "low culture" as "high culture". why is manos important? because it was shown at an underground new york city club by three people sometime in the early 1980s, and those three people went on to become Famous Artists! come on, nothing against keith haring, but who's watching this movie on the grounds that keith haring may once have seen it?

bob lefse (rushomancy), Sunday, 5 November 2017 02:58 (six years ago) link

It seems kind of pointless to watch this film without Joel & The 'Bots.

i guess i'm kinda curious how it plays without them. it's a sick and ugly movie that they make watchable in a different way than a lot of their usual dross, because it's so dead and empty. feels like it might be kind of an interesting viewing experience in a darkened theater, idk.

thanks for the correction, morbz. i need new glasses!

Doctor Casino, Sunday, 5 November 2017 05:04 (six years ago) link

I’ve got the Blu-ray restoration — per a question above, it is restored from the original negative, but it was a Super-8 or something similarly basic to start with — and without Joel etc it’s a definitely bizarre watch. The lacunae and utter lack of sense in terms of how to edit for pace become weirdly compelling.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 5 November 2017 05:33 (six years ago) link

added to the MoMA equation is that a *large* minority of every film audience there is octogenarians who have no idea what they're about to see.

oscar voters, then?

bob lefse (rushomancy), Sunday, 5 November 2017 11:45 (six years ago) link

probably a few... the stories i have...

rushomancy, I could've gone to Club 57 (didn't), but a friend (who is still here 35 years later) fondly remembers seeing Frankenstein Meets the Space Monster there. So some people knew it partly for the movies they showed, it seems.

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 5 November 2017 14:17 (six years ago) link

you heard it hear first folks, "manos" has oscar momentum!

Doctor Casino, Sunday, 5 November 2017 14:43 (six years ago) link

how many drive-ins did it play in the '60s?

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 5 November 2017 15:19 (six years ago) link

Scattered ones in Texas by all accounts.

Finally saw this tonight. John Stossel was an inspired choice for the antagonist.
