Does Chris from Menswe@r still play guitar for Mr Quaye? -dud-

I remember a review claiming that his second album was better than Spiritualized -- but then again, this was talking about the most recent Spz album, so this could well be valid. I actually still need to listen to Mr. Quaye's stuff in full, I have both his albums lurking around somewhere.

Amusingly dud -- his attempts to pass himself off as Tricky's cousin or uncle or something.

First album - Classic
Second album - Dud

Dud all around. Shockingly little potential shown, then not even lived up to.

dud. and by all accounts everyone at his label wanted the 2nd lp to flop cos he was a complet and utter cock who would berate his tour manager in front of a room full of people because he'd been brought to the venue while his backing band were still soundchecking.

guy called gerald's "finley's rainbow": undeniable classic.

Finley Quaye's "Spiritualized" was ok, ironically enough. I always secretly hoped Jason Spaceman would respond in kind...

"The great new hope of British reggae" & his first single is....a rockified (sorry) Bob Marley cover. Like Oasis covering the Beatles - pointless, dull, demeaning

Finley's Rainbow. Classic.
Finley. Dud.

Timo Maas & Finley Quaye "Caravan"- Under-rated and possibly unheard by many collaboration. His 2nd album flopped mainly, I think, because he didn't do much in the way of promotion for it- only a handful of live shows.

Lacklustre and swimming in the shallow end of try-hardery, Quaye's problem is that he isn't actually very good at anything; a shockingly simple oversight on behalf of both him and his record company, that sprang to light sharply when the rose-tinted nostalgia that inexplicably surrounded his first record wore off and the press discovered he smelt funny. Dud.

see my above post. the reason for so little promotion was that he was so brutally rude to everyone he worked with that almost everyone at his label decided that they were doing absolutely no work on his second album.

I thik it's called karma?

i'm bringing this back for two reasons

1) i want to know whether if it was ever really proved that Finley was/wasnt Tricky's Uncle (the claim was based on the fact that Tricky's mother's name was Quaye, as in Maxine Quaye but whether that was her maiden name or her name from re-marrying i'm not sure - Tricky's real name is Adrian Hoares I believe? confusing!)

2) I'm listening to 'Maverick A Strike' for the first time in about 3 years and I have to say most of it is still fucking brilliant, especially 'Supreme I Preme', 'Its Great When We're Together', 'The Way Of The Explosive' and all the other lesser know supposed 'filler' tracks...didnt much of the Timo Maas track tho but will persist

tricky's real name is adrian Thaws, isn't it?
i also heard about the finley/maxine quaye relationship, and i gave it credit until i read this thread.
there's some brilliant songs on the first album i remember enjoying very much.

well it is/was plausible that he and Thaws (thanks joan) are related somehow so i dont see why not...it was never proven otherwise was it? i can imagine Tricky denying it because of possible issues with his parents but thats pure speculation...and here come the lawyers right on cue :)

stevem (blueski), Friday, 13 December 2002 17:52 (11 years ago) Permalink

I think I remember him claiming to be Tricky's half-brother. I haven't heard a word about Finley Quaye for 3-4 years or so, maybe my memory is a bit foggy.

Reviving.

Listened to Maverick A Strike on Sunday morning (after having stolen it from Emma's CD dungeon of stuff she bought ages ago and doesn't care for anymore) and really enjoyed all of it, near enough. I also found the NME review of Vanguard - Steve Sutherland giving it 9 and claiming it was the future of music, or something, cos it had nonsense lyrics and reggae rhythms and folk melodies, or something.

But certainly, several of the tracks on maverick I found really really good, the production sharp and clear and the rhythms nice and fat and head-nodding. Is Finley an "insufferable cunt"? Is he talented or did he fluke a decent album?

Reggae star Finley Quaye has pleaded not guilty to assaulting a woman in an allegedly racially aggravated attack in Edinburgh.

Quaye denies repeatedly spitting on Jobely Flores' face and striking her on the head to her injury in Leith Walk on 8 October 2011.

Mr Quaye was not at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Wednesday. His lawyer entered his not guilty plea.

A trial date was set for 24 August 2012.

Quaye, who now lives in London, was born in Edinburgh in March 1974 and won a MOBO for best reggae act in 1997.

He also won a Brit Award for Best Male Solo Artist the following year after securing two top 20 hits from his debut album Maverick A Strike.

His mum Sharon McGowan died when he was aged 10 and his father Cab Kaye was a jazz musician.

Quaye has worked with other musicians such as Iggy Pop, Primal Scream and West Indian musical legend Lee Scratch Perry.

http://loft965.com/2014/09/14/finley-quaye-homeless-8-years/

Finley Quaye, who rose to fame because of a series of reggae-tinted britpop hits in the 90s’ has taken to his Facebook page to inform the world that he is having a hard time being homeless. Quaye has been homeless for 8 years and has suffered tremendously as a result. Here’s what he had to say:

Ok people I am in my 8th consecutive year of being homeless I have lost 2/5 of my body muscle mass in the last few years I am now at my all time weakest. I am literally skin and bone now, bones protruding . Any music loving Finley Quaye fans in London let me know if you can help I am willing to rent obviously, cant buy but I can rent. This isnt a new thing I have been homeless between the ages of 16 and 40, so many times. I have 22 teeth left at 40 years of age and unable to sing or smile and have been unable to smile for the past 10 years and unable to afford treatment. Have been drug and alcohol free for 90% of the past 10 years, in recovery since 2000. I am actually disintegrating, the last few years have been the worse and things have gotten harder, there are far less resources, prices have gotten higher and people have gotten meaner and less sympathetic, so it’s really tough.. often made to walk up to 25 miles a day every day. I went through hell in Berlin starving all the time lost so much weight there too, homeless, starved and nearly froze to death in Wales in 2006/7, people would observe but do nothing, I beseech you not to ignore me now. Please email me at finleyquayemu✧✧✧@gm✧✧✧.c✧✧ if interested or if you know anybody interested in helping.
