This is a coming of age song for me. Reminds me of the summertime and turning 13...good times, good song...ah nostalgia.

I kind of misremembered this song for a few years as being a really garden variety sleepy ballad with no ridiculous spoken verses, and then heard it again recently and was like oh yeah, now I remember why this song is a legendary piece of shit.

In 2006, Shawn put out a new single, entitled "Beautiful Wreck", from the album 9th Ward Pickin Parlor. The single enjoyed modest success, and was featured in the popular Cities 97 Cities Sampler, Volume 18.

The "Nashville with a tan", I believe, is the writer stating how he sees people in Nashville and California (where the song is set, Fairfax and Hollywood are both in California) are both the kind of people with a plan. California is known for alot of tan "surfer dudes". Therefore, this place in California is like Nashville, except they are all tan.

My dad really liked this and my mom made fun of him for it, she did great voice-cracking impressions of the "eveRYYYYthing."

Closer to Mr. Mullins's time, "Screenwriter's Blues" and "Drinking in LA" are both pretty good, certainly better than "Lullaby."
