Helmet!! Word. One of the best guitar sounds ever mother fuckers! I really enjoy Meantime, Betty, and Aftertaste all pretty good. I think Meantime and Sepultura's Choas AD had a huge influence on later '90's metal too. That doesn't mean that they aren't great fucking albums either mother fuckers! Fuck!

all i ever heard about the guy was how he was a phd but most of the music seemed pretty brainless.

keith (keithmcl), Sunday, 31 August 2003 22:19 (twenty years ago) link

I loved Helmet back in the day. Hamilton came up with some cool riffs. I was pretty solidly moving away from metallic type sounds in my listening around this time, but I still really liked these guys. I thought the first album on AmRep was pretty cool, but Meantime totally blew it away. I hadn't listened to it in years but someone played it at a bar a couple of months ago, and it still sounded great.

I think their particular approach flamed out pretty quickly, though. Betty just seemed like going through the motions, and I never heard anything after that. I wish they could have found a way to liven or broaden their sound somewhat. For all the lip service Page Hamilton paid to guys like Ornette Coleman, or how into "jazz" he always claimed to be, you sure couldn't hear it in the music.

There are definite affinities between the music of Helmet and some of the nu-metallers. What little I've heard of the Deftones struck me as kind of a Helmet redux. I actually just auditioned Betty a few weeks ago, because I've been going through a cd purge (it didn't make the cut); I listened with the nu-metal guys in mind, as I've heard the idea of a linkage advanced before. But who can say how much of that is a direct borrowing/whatever? Most of the formal elements in Helmet's music had long been present in the metal vocabulary. The churning, repetitive chord-based riffs of AC/DC; the fussy time signatures and jerky rhythms of something like King Crimson's Red. Sometimes their occasional use of space even recalled Pink Flag-era Wire.

I once saw 'em in like 1991 opening up for the Melvins in a little shithole performance space that was only around for a couple years. It was a great show. Helmet's sound completely filled the room; it was like swimming in sound waves. LOUD AS FUCK.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Sunday, 31 August 2003 22:33 (twenty years ago) link

Search "Sinatra" off Strap it On & most of Meantime. Betty seemed to me like a move away from the simple and v. effective formula of the first two (i.e. songs based around bludgeoning, repetitive intensity), and I liked it less. Never heard Aftertaste.

I can see a link to nu-metal in that Helmet was one of the first bands to get significant airplay blending many of nu-metal's signature elements, though they lacked nu-metal's hip-hop stylings and angsty lyrics.

Jeremy (Jeremy), Sunday, 31 August 2003 23:14 (twenty years ago) link

_strap it on_ is still a classic. i was introduced to it by a friend who put it up to the top volume on his crappy little 2 speaker car stereo. the 2-inch speakers were pushin' hard. must be listened to loudest.

_meantime_ really, really bores me.

I was imagining a thread like this the other day. I owned Betty several years ago, and had to re-buy it because it never left me. Milktoast is so classic when it goes into overdrive. The only song on Aftertaste that left much impression on me was Crisis King, so yeah, search that.

The one good thing I can say about Helmet is that they brought Caspar Brotzmann Massaker on tour with 'em, and I got to see that show at the Stone Pony in Asbury Park NJ on my birthday.

Never liked their music much, though the song "In The Meantime" was okay.

unperson, Monday, 1 September 2003 20:54 (twenty years ago) link

[...] Sepultura's Chaos AD had a huge influence on later '90's metal too

That's the other way round, surely? Chaos AD was perceived as their sellout/bandwagonjumping album because they moved to the US and adopted the sound/songwriting that was popular in the US at the time (Biohazard/Pantera et al). A typical "me too" album, so to say...

Hmm. "Meantime" is one of absolute favorite discs, and "Betty" had some great songs, but "Aftertaste" was deeply troubling. This makes me nervous. Terrible title, and the lineup of ex-Bush, White Zombie, Anthrax people makes me suspicious.

Softly Weeping at the Oki Dog (Ben Boyer), Thursday, 29 July 2004 15:37 (nineteen years ago) link

I liked Helmet until I saw them and got a combat boot in the eye from a crowdsurfer. Not that I hold the band responsible, but it tainted my opinion nonetheless.

When the show was over, I slipped on a patch of ice outside and landed right on my ass.

I hope this record sucks and sells peanuts.

Listening now to Monochrome. I'm still mad about the events that transpired the one time I saw them live, but that's my own baggage—not Hamilton's.

Anyway yeah, listening to Monochrome. Not having heard anything since Betty, I'm sort of thrown by how shredded his voice sounds now.

Oh wait, the title track sounds like King's X. WTF?!

I'm not sure I want to finish this.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Saturday, 17 June 2006 05:09 (seventeen years ago) link

Helmet pretty much only has two songs, the fast one and the slow one, but both sound pretty good. I think Meantime is one of the best sounding guitar albums of that time, the guitars and drums are huge. Criminy it was recorded by Albini and Wharton Tiers then mixed by Andy Wallace, those three guys (and Butch Vig) are pretty much the rock production sound of the early 90s.

Helmet just didn't seem to be able to come up with enough good tunes after that one. Betty would about make a good EP.

I would have liked to seen them live back then, but never got around to seeing them play.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Saturday, 17 June 2006 05:31 (seventeen years ago) link

he kind of kills his bid for cred with this: Last year, he produced Distort Yourself, the debut by former Bush frontman Gavin Rossdale's new band, Institute.

dude, that's free money. i don't blame him for taking that gig. or the hardcore dudes who joined the bush dude's idiot band. even albini takes idiot money.

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 17 June 2006 13:37 (seventeen years ago) link

It's amazing that in this day and age people still equate "sellout" with someone taking a side gig to pay the bills.

Page Hamilton has one thing to prove: "can he make another good record?"

Because that hasn't happened since Meantime.

He does have a right to be a grumpy old man. Garbage like Candlebox stole his gimmick and trademark riffs and hit platinum with them. And becuase they did, they got dated quick.

Uncle Tom (Uncle Tom), Saturday, 17 June 2006 19:00 (seventeen years ago) link

Prong did not do the odd time sigs or make their living playing in Drop-D tunings. Other than the fact that both bands came out of NYC and put out records on major labels, there wasn't much in common.

Candlebox's breakout hit had a hook that ripped off "In The Meantime."

dude, PUDDLE OF MUDD. More like Puddle of Dudd, amirite?

Ok anyways Helmet rules and Page is OTM here:
"I hear so many bands that, to me, I can't distinguish between them," he said, talking about the current scene. "It's sort of like, 'Insert four guys with tattoos here.' And it's pseudo-hardcore or pseudo-punk rock or emo. It just seems like you get your 'Rock Star 101' manual and fill in the blanks. This music just doesn't interest me at this point in my life."

Marmot 4-Tay (marmotwolof), Sunday, 18 June 2006 09:50 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah there seems to be basically about 3 (maybe 4) basic templates for most of the nu-"hardcore" and/or "punk" kiddie bands:

1. Bands who are influenced by Converge/Botch/Coalesce/Dilinger Escape Plan, but with simpler riffs and a tendency to break up the dissonance with cheesy stabs at melody. Alternating screaming and obnoxious sing-songy vocals. Sound like a cornier Deftones.

2. The more metallic-sounding bands with ripped-off In Flames/At the Gates riffage, also alternating screaming and obnoxious sing-songy vocals.

3. Bands rooted in "hardcore" but unabashedly pop-punk influenced as well. High-pitched, nasal vocals.

Of course none of these categories are exclusive or anything.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Sunday, 18 June 2006 10:28 (seventeen years ago) link

there are times when i really need a loud, heavy riff-charged assault a la 'meantime'. aside from these times, i don't feel the urge to listen to it all that often.

Bill Magill, Thursday, 23 August 2007 16:41 (sixteen years ago) link

'betty' really does dip after the first four tracks (which are awesome). way too many tepid, 'nice-enough' snoozers deflating the energy of the thing.

Charlie Howard, Friday, 31 August 2007 17:12 (sixteen years ago) link

Love exactly two Helmet songs: Impressionable and the 1st version of Born Annoying. Ha ha part is that both come from a demo that AmRep released against the band's wishes. Oh yeah, and they did a swell cover of Killing Joke's Primitive. Other than that, don't give a shit.
