But you realize they're dated as well.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 13 February 2003 14:12 (twenty-one years ago) link

but we laughed at the crapness of this tincan new age music when it came out

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 13 February 2003 14:13 (twenty-one years ago) link

the Faithless track is one of the best things they've ever done for me

'Porcelain' was fine before it cropped up on sixty billion adverts/tv shows

i also like the New Order track on it....(would duck but doesnt give a fying fuck anymore)

that said, you've got a point about it being dated, but i dont blame the music for that - its symptomatic of the 'instant expiry' nature of pop culture today now that everything's been done and redone and remixed and re-released and revived again blah blah blah oh who cares

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 13 February 2003 14:14 (twenty-one years ago) link

But you realize they're dated as well.

The spirit lives on.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Thursday, 13 February 2003 14:17 (twenty-one years ago) link

And thus two threads are tied together with a bow and knot. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 13 February 2003 14:17 (twenty-one years ago) link

reason i love 'Woozy' so much: heard it about 3 and a half years ago, was depressed a bit, the girl's muffled voice at the start has a nice sense of poignancy when accompanied by those typical Rollo/Bliss strings, Maxi Jazz vocals a lot more warped and creepy - gives the track a real dark and sleazy feel (as the lyrics concur), there's a lot of transitions in the track, more than you get with any straight out Faithless style club/dance track - it seems quite out of step in that respect but it does still possess those anthemic Faithles trademarks which remind you of 'Salva Mea' and 'Insomnia' and if you loved those tracks at the time they came out (as i did) then its like a nice nostalgic tribute effect...

or maybe its just coffee table tedium hm...

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 13 February 2003 14:22 (twenty-one years ago) link

I've always liked this soundtrack. I don't see the point in denouncing stuff you liked in the past just because it sounds "dated"; that's possibly the most fickle and shallow way of listening to music that I can imagine.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 13 February 2003 14:28 (twenty-one years ago) link

the Perry has spoken

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 13 February 2003 14:30 (twenty-one years ago) link

yeah but piscesboy never says that he liked it then either.

i always imagine this type of music to be played at like Alpha recruitment centres

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 13 February 2003 14:32 (twenty-one years ago) link

Dismissing something as "dated" carries the heavy implication that at one point it was what everyone craved, but now everyone has wised up and moved on to what's hot now. Fickle fickle fickle.

(Honestly, I just like typing the word "fickle". It's so cute-looking!)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 13 February 2003 14:46 (twenty-one years ago) link

But Dan that is by some distance the most exciting and efficient way of consuming pop music!

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 13 February 2003 14:49 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yes, but does liking what's going on now mean that you have start disliking what was going on then? I don't think so (obviously, otherwise I wouldn't still be bringing up Sly Fox and Baltimora when people talk about the 80s).

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 13 February 2003 14:51 (twenty-one years ago) link

(The movie did suck gigantic space donkey, though.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 13 February 2003 14:52 (twenty-one years ago) link

No but I think the idea of "dated" doesn't preclude the idea of "also sometime in the future I will like it more" - I think the ebb and flow of liking things is nothing to be ashamed of.

"Dated" is kind of a value-neutral word for me though.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 13 February 2003 14:53 (twenty-one years ago) link

bringing up Sly Fox and Baltimora when people talk about the 80s

are they your clever slang terms for vomit and phlegm?

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 13 February 2003 14:53 (twenty-one years ago) link

I think it's a semantic thing; every time I've heard someone use the word "dated", it's been in reference to something that they were just GAGA over five minutes ago. It's ardently worshipping the idea of hot new music without actually listening to and enjoying it and it drives me crazy.

Sly Fox did the fantastic "Let's Go All The Way" and Baltimora did the equally fantastic "Tarzan Boy". Both are "dated" in the sense that there's almost no conceivable way that they could come from any year besides 1986, but I thought they were fantastic when they came out and I expect that I will continue to think so until I die.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 13 February 2003 15:03 (twenty-one years ago) link

For me all "dated" means is - this record says more to me about the time it came out of than the time I'm listening to it in. That feeling of being transported back can be incredibly powerful and magical, of course, or it can be annoying and embarrassing. It can also fade with time and be replaced by a more time-neutral feeling about the record.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 13 February 2003 15:06 (twenty-one years ago) link

I think most people find it to be a much more negative word Tom, otherwise the entire premise of this thread doesn't make sense.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 13 February 2003 15:10 (twenty-one years ago) link

Oh yeah I know how it's used - I was just outlining why I think it is a useful word even though it's treated so lazily by people.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 13 February 2003 15:13 (twenty-one years ago) link

I am not prepared to interface with your meta! Wait until I've done some work and eaten lunch, THEN we'll be talking.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 13 February 2003 15:14 (twenty-one years ago) link

Hey! That All Saints songs is great!

Carey (Carey), Thursday, 13 February 2003 15:40 (twenty-one years ago) link

off topic, there's an ad for Malaysia Airline on here where they have just got some producer and singer to record a terrible clone of 'Pure Shores' because this is cheaper than using the real 'Pure SHores' - i wish there was a law against this cos i just find it really annoying - also happened with Deee-Lite's 'Groove Is In The Heart' on a car ad last year

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 13 February 2003 18:18 (twenty-one years ago) link

I tend to use "dated" when I feel something was relevent at its release but I've missed the boat so to speak, like Massive Attack or something, I'm sure people who were there really like them but to me they just feel redundant. It's not really a logical thing.

I don't think the soundtrack is dated, I just think there's a few crap songs on it, I think the "this is music for execs" thing is a pathetically easy mould to put an album with "pure shores" which was from a film called "the beach" which had a cool oceanic video in it. I mean use other idle slurs cos that one is so hackneyed.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 13 February 2003 18:24 (twenty-one years ago) link

I thought dated meant that you can tell when it came out just by listening to it.

Cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 13 February 2003 18:29 (twenty-one years ago) link

"dated" heavily implies "irrelevant" and "useless".

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 13 February 2003 18:42 (twenty-one years ago) link

does no one else like the film?
there's a few cringe inducing bits, but overall i really like it...

robin (robin), Thursday, 13 February 2003 18:50 (twenty-one years ago) link

"dated" means we went out once, NOTHING MORE I SWEAR!

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 13 February 2003 18:50 (twenty-one years ago) link

I liked the book quite a bit, I didn't see the film. What Chemical Brothers song is on the soundtrack?

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 13 February 2003 18:51 (twenty-one years ago) link

It was okay right up to the point where Leo started charging around like a videogame character. I then was too busy wishing I could slap the director to enjoy the rest of the movie.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 13 February 2003 18:56 (twenty-one years ago) link

also the Underworld track on it '8 Ball' is fantastic, but then i would say that...

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 13 February 2003 20:50 (twenty-one years ago) link

the videogame sequence was probably a mistake because it takes things out of context and makes something of a mockery out of what suspense and mood was being built up to that point by Leo going all schizo and the drug barons killing the new arrivals - but conceptually i think a sequence like that could work really well in another instance e.g. a film with an overall surreal feel

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 13 February 2003 20:52 (twenty-one years ago) link

Exactly! It was so out-of-place with the rest of the movie that I lost the desire to take the rest of the film seriously after that.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 13 February 2003 20:54 (twenty-one years ago) link

Dan if we collectively made "manufactured" safe for ILM we can do the same with "dated"!

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 13 February 2003 22:51 (twenty-one years ago) link

Haha touche!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 13 February 2003 23:22 (twenty-one years ago) link
