And FYI I don't mind this "girl cooties" you were talking about. I like "Do You Mind."

Durrr, everyone likes "Do You Mind", it's so ubiquitously adored that it doesn't really say anything about what you do or don't enjoy.

What's the tune about 22mins in with the squishy bell noise in the background?

The first half of 22 mins is a refix of "Gabryelle" which I assume you'd recognise. Then it becomes Funkystepz's marvelous "Fuller" which is what I think you're talking about.

Also after about 35mins there's one with big tribal drums and buzzing noises that's just huge.

35 minutes is Emvee's "Windrush Riddim" which I just adore. But I think you're talking about the track after that (from about 36 min) which is indeed massive but which I don't know.

Actually I think those numbers are a bit off, I'll have another listen.

Matt DC, Monday, 4 October 2010 09:43 (thirteen years ago) link

the awesome one at 35 mins is mercurial myrmidon's 'hey bongo', from the new ep they were kind enough to put out for free:

http://thestayspun.com/2010/08/27/mercurial-myrmidon-the-warm-up-ep/

also contains 'pataptoon' which marcus listeners will be familiar with. (trust that website to stream the other two duff tracks instead eh?)

i hope people noticed rankin inexplicably saying "chimpanzee" in the background just before the drop on 'windrush' btw.

Good on Ill Blu for coming up with a slightly new drum pattern for themselves, I hadn't noticed that about this tune in the mix.

what funky shows are essential if I'm already listening to marcus/petchy/funkystepz on the regular? I'm trying to keep redundancy to a minimum so if everyone else is just playing the same stuff I'm not really that interested.

Soul Jazz continue their travels through contemporary UK underground dance music ("Box Of Dub", "Steppers Delight", "Future Bass") with "Riddim Box" a new compilation of the most unique, left-field and innovative UK funky releases of the recent past mixing together grime, house, dubstep, dancehall and R&B to stunning effect. "Riddim Box" brings together some of the most innovative artists and creative UK producers with this stellar selection of twisted left-field tracks from celebrated names such as Shystie, Kode9, Crazy Cousins alongside exclusive cuts from LV, Grievous Angel and more.

With its roots in the UK Garage scene and emerging out of the union of dubstep and house, UK funky draws a line from the original sounds of jungle and drum and bass and dancehall through to the newer UK dance music variants such as grime, dubstep and 2-step.

wash your hands after visiting but the dj naughty guest mix here is good stuff once it gets going.

mad one's brill 'nanny pest' is worth the entry fee alone - like a cross between 'house girls' and murdz86's 'dem rasta ways dere', but even better.

This is what I felt like on paper too but actually when you listen to it the Supa D mix is a pretty great anthems selection for anyone who doesn't have awesome radio sets in their pocket.

MA1's set of course confirms what I always suspected, which is that he basically resents the past two years of funky's development. The inclusion of "Seasons" is a somewhat hamfisted denial.

Finally listed to that late September Ill Blu set. So good! Immensely satisfying percussive rave frenzy.

Also I listened to it.

Tim F, Tuesday, 12 October 2010 04:10 (thirteen years ago) link

dunno if it's really related to this topic, but 'chazm/footsteppin'' by julio bashmore is great, but it might be just my soft spot for these kind of eerie (chazm) or nostalgic (footsteppin') tracks. the rythm on the first one draws a (sort of) straight line to funky, tho.

'nanny prest' is massive. tim or rtc, could you point me a set where i can find 'tribal dream day' or 'gotta have it' ? (dunno if i ever heard them, tbh*)

*there is also a track by devine called 'night train', right?

rusty_allen, Tuesday, 12 October 2010 11:14 (thirteen years ago) link

hi ross, dunno about the other ones but a brief bit of 'tribal daydream' is on the marcus & majestic soundcloud mix from january... sadly it's not on there any more though.

filling in gaps of funky miscellany gone by is probably not the ting tbh w/ u.

lol @ the ill blu tune/remix that goes "you should know my twin towers will never fall easily"

though i suppose it could be a lord of the rings reference

ory, Thursday, 14 October 2010 20:59 (thirteen years ago) link

"Gotta Have It" was on a lot of Marcus sets at the very beginning of 09. Pretty sure it's on Jan 15 which is far and away the best set from that period IMO (from memory this set also has "Every Step", "You Got Me", "Turbulence", the what's going on/gypsy woman combo..).

I'll try to post it one of these days.

Have been on another Ill Blu tracks/remixes binge these past few days. It really does quite shock me that their rep isn't even bigger than it is (I mean, beyond the bounds of funky and then tedious types who only like/know the Hyperdub single) - they're so obv the pre-eminent production team in the world right now.

Though I guess I felt the same way about the wideboys in 2000. Same as it ever was.

What I like about Ill Blu remixes though is how they often have this kind of dialectical process of consolidation going on - adding new tricks and then reterritorialising them into the typical "Ill Blu" sound.

So, like, if you wanted to play someone the most representative Ill Blu production at this point it'd probably be the "Green Light" remix, which also happens to be one of their most extreme/maximalist - in this case the archetype is the extremity/maximalism.

where else?, and around the 90 min mark. (it is the "hi dere rhythmic danger" number). should add the track a couple beforehand is very dutty also.

LIONS DEN. SHUT UP.

Oh yes. This is ridic.

Do we know who it is?

should add the track a couple beforehand is very dutty also.

I'm assuming this is the one at 87 minutes.

Big show!

Tim F, Sunday, 24 October 2010 21:29 (thirteen years ago) link

god not to piss on its undoubtedly unfuckwitable chips or anything but i can scarcely believe that that 'lions den' will ever ever again sound as incredible as it did there - sharing the new awe w/ ranks & shants and rankin absolutely tearing it first go unheard. (shout out to hector the cannibal.)

dunno who its by yet, no. quite hard to place who it even might be by even! though i'm sure it'll be obvious in hindsight.

the other track - meant the one before actually. or rather this.

r|t|c, Sunday, 24 October 2010 23:48 (thirteen years ago) link

rankin was on top form the whole show really - who else would try out some new humble god-praising bars and then think out loud "hmm those might need a bit of lubrication". hero obv.

(i done another aspie tracklist for that show earlier btw - probably most unnecessary but can put up if anyone really wants. also if one of the "estonian massive" who seem to get a shout on every single ruddy rinse show i've listened to lately ask for it i will definitely oblige.)

r|t|c, Monday, 25 October 2010 00:02 (thirteen years ago) link

some terrific ill blu stuff on their own recent shows as well: a hilariously furious overdriven grime hoover one (which would be fun enough already if it didnt also have a drop into complete and utter MAYHEM) and then that massive breakbeaty "get freaky with you" track with the swooping vox and pounding everything.

both can be most easily heard during their little funkystepzy own-brand segment starting round about the 50min mark here:

http://relay.exequo.org/rinsefm/podcast/IllBlu121010.mp3

r|t|c, Monday, 25 October 2010 00:14 (thirteen years ago) link

also selah's 'i want you out my house' produced by & featuring donaeo early on in that set is class and ought to be v popular i should reckon

r|t|c, Monday, 25 October 2010 00:16 (thirteen years ago) link

That Ill Blu set, and especially the section from 50mins onwards, is an absolute belter. They really seem, consciously or otherwise, to be moving into the space that big-room electrohouse found itself in mid-2004 - huge, ravey, overdriven bombastic tracks that eat you alive.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 26 October 2010 09:35 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah that ill blu set is more than a little bit excellent

I haven't listened to the 12 October set yet but if this is what I think it is and also was on the 21 September set then yes it's AMAZING.

Yes, it's this line (the space between "Meltdown" and the Roll Deep remixes, basically) that I find most interesting in their work.

rankin was on top form the whole show really - who else would try out some new humble god-praising bars and then think out loud "hmm those might need a bit of lubrication". hero obv.

Adding Shantie to the show has had the unexpected effect of making me appreciate Rankin' more again, especially as he's added a few new bars recently. I like that there's (what deej might describe as) a fully-fledged persona that coalesces out of his swing between being an amoral sex machine and feeling guilt about it.

i done another aspie tracklist for that show earlier btw - probably most unnecessary but can put up if anyone really wants.

Please do, if it helps me ID one or two tracks it's appreciated.

Tim F, Tuesday, 26 October 2010 22:40 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah a tracklist would be grand

ogmor, Wednesday, 27 October 2010 02:26 (thirteen years ago) link

How long does that Ill Blu own-brand section last, incidentally? I have it going from 50mins through to about 1hr06 but then you get the Green Light instrumental and Time To Get Nasty a bit later.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 27 October 2010 08:55 (thirteen years ago) link

Apparently (so sez dissensus) Funkystepz will be releasing "Fuller" b/w "Hurricane Riddim" on Hyperdub. Unbeatable combo IMO.

I don't think there's a specific section as such: Ill Blu regularly play their own to other stuff in about a 2:1 mix and this set seems to be the same, there are Ill Blu tracks after "Time To Get Nasty" on there as well.

Great set...
