Thought this would be a Whiney thread but, hey, this makes sense too!

Maybe if we're lucky we'll get a nice single or two outta this album. Not crossing my fingers, though.

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Tuesday, 28 September 2010 22:06 (thirteen years ago) link

this is from ontd! who i believe may have stolen it from nme? no idea what really goes on there

anyway

‘Sing’
Starting off synthy, slinky and just a little bit funky, ‘Sing’ then erupts into another call to euphoric call to mass doing-stuff-together as waves of filthy bass cascade around Gerard as he sings, “You’ve got to be what tomorrow needs” as he dodges elephant-stomp drums. This is the likely second single.

‘Planetary (Go!)’
More straight-ahead rock underpinned by a slight Giorgio Moroder thing going on in the background, giving way to scattershot machine-gunny guitars as the album hits its masculine stride.

‘The Only Hope For Me Is You’
The original version we heard of this was a big emotive ballad in the vein of ‘I Don’t Love You’. Here it’s synthed up and theatrical, almost turning into a 4/4 house tune at one point before morphing into sabre-toothed gonzoid, robotic thrash. Amazing.

‘Jet-Star And The Kobra Kid / Traffic Report’
Dr Death Deft is back with a traffic report, and an instruction to “die with your mask on if you have to.”

‘Party Poison’
Live versions of this are all over the internet in its original incarnation as ‘Death Before Disco’. The new version is less Hives-y and more bloodcurdling. “This ain’t a party / get off the dancefloor / you wanna get down / I wanna gang war.”

‘Save Yourself, I’ll Hold Them Back’
A massive FM rock love-letter to fans, (♥) taking off from the message left at the end of ‘Famous Last Words’ last time round. Lyrically this is familiar territory to what MCR have always done, imploring, “This ain’t a room full of suicides,” giving way to the band’s renewed sense of determination: “We can live forever if you’ve got the time.”

‘The Scarecrow Blues’
This is the best song. A ludicrously gay lighters-aloft Starship style ANTHEM. Except nothing being that simple, it’s buried beneath swathes of thick, filthy crude oil and feedback such that you can barely even hear the vocal. BRAVE.

‘Anytime You Want’
A great big pop song with an irresistible Hall and Oates sheen and very possibly the most memorable chorus on an album not exactly short of them.

‘Destroyah’
Huge tribal goth guitar groove, repeated over and over again like a heavy metal Stone Roses doing something from The Rocky Horror Show, culminating in Gerard screeching the title over and over and over and over again. Insanely heavy, and therefore brilliant.

‘The Kids From Yesterday’
Can’t remember much about this one was cos was still picking self up off the floor after ‘Destroyah’. It’s a bit slow and windswept.

‘Goodnite Dr Death’
And our compere signs off, followed by something so hilarious and brilliant it would be considered a spoiler if we were to reveal it to you now.

‘Vampire Money’
Classic bastard Stooges garage rock, by way of the Tazmanian Devil from Looney Toons. My Chem goof up, freak out, screech off into the sunset. RESULT.

Sent via BlackBerry from T-Mobile (dayo), Wednesday, 29 September 2010 11:58 (thirteen years ago) link

wow, i really like it. i always liked them better when they just made everything seem fun as hell (like teenagers) instead of ridiculously melodramatic*. hopefully the album is in the same vein.

*not that their melodrama is bad, but in long doses (i.e. album form) i can't stomach too much of it.

a hoy hoy, Wednesday, 29 September 2010 12:08 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah "Teenagers" was the one burst of fast mean fun on the last album that felt like the band I fell in love with on Three Cheers, "Na Na Na" is making me really excited about the prospect that they got their mojo back.

"Teenagers" sounded too much like the Sex Pistols' "Friggin in the Rigging" for me.

this is a good thing.
having never paid any attention to the band before, i have to admit the song is great for 5 plays.
just concerned that by the time the album hits it will have become annoying.

'na na na' is super lame imo but i like the 2nd one

though i did think it was gonna be a cover of berri 'sunshine after the rain' when the first verse started :/

shit "na na na" is WONDERFUL. if they actually sounded like that, i'd buy their records and wear a patch on my jacket. hives + didjits = ! then i listen to "the only hope for me is you" and i'm reminded... brief fan reviews of a few of the songs up there are kinda encouraging though. "Classic bastard Stooges garage rock, by way of the Tazmanian Devil from Looney Toons." okay!

what does this mean exactly? I mean, "Na Na Na" is their song and it sounds like lots of their other songs, especially on Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge, that's what they actually sound like.

some dude, Wednesday, 13 October 2010 17:47 (thirteen years ago) link

^ was kidding, half. only know them through the black parade which does not, for the most part, sound like that. TBP, iirc, sounds like mopey/romantic emo drool, like "the only hope for me is you" (a song that quickly stomped my "na na na" buzz).

miss danilelle steven and her clitoral stimulator (contenderizer), Wednesday, 13 October 2010 20:54 (thirteen years ago) link

miss danilelle steven and her clitoral stimulator (contenderizer), Wednesday, 13 October 2010 20:56 (thirteen years ago) link

The Black Parade was pretty much their "let's pretend we're a completely different band" move, "Na Na Na" is much closer to their 'core sound'

Interview at the Quietus. Love this bit:

While rumours of the band splitting can easily be put to rest, some other tags can't be shifted so easily. Danger Days is possibly one of the boldest and most exuberant sheer rock records of 2010, but that won't be enough, you fear, to stop them from being dismissed as emo by the close-minded. Is that frustrating for the band? Because you could argue that using 'emo' as a catch-all term to describe your previous output is a bit of a misnomer anyway, so is…

"Thank you!" says Mikey excitedly, interjecting halfway through the question. "That's awesome…"

Gerard, meanwhile, pauses at length, before revealing: "I guess what bothered me about it, and made me so mad, was that it was lazy. It was such an easy way to take this band that's really special and unique, and give it a tag. Especially to tag it with shit that I abhor. That would infuriate me. So you're saying that what we do - the work we put into this, the 3am nights, the things we sacrificed - is this the same as this fucking record? This fucking band? You're out of your mind if you think these things are remotely close to each other."

"It made it easy to pick out which people are actually journalists and which people just go straight to your Wikipedia page," says Frank.

Back to Mikey: "Some of them will almost have this weird glow in their eyes when they say the word," he says, before impersonating an eager hack. "'I just said it'… it's like they're laying a mine in front of you."

"I don't think Eddie Vedder ever appreciated the word grunge," ponders Gerard, "but I don't think it bothers him anymore because he's still making music. Now granted they've been a band for 20 something years and we've almost been a band for 10, so I'm starting to understand - maybe - how he feels. Like, 'Oh, that crap is gone'. He's not dealing with people saying 'So, you sound like Candlebox, right?'"

All the band break out into laughter, as Gerard adds in disbelief. "Imagine him thinking about that? Fucking Candlebox."

S.I.N.G. is generic

this * 10K. it isn't memorable, either. but (a) i'm not a fan of this band and, tbf, (b) the song is better than i expected. there's something distinctively "major-label" about the production/sheen, i think, but i can't put my finger on it (and maybe i'm hearing what i want to hear).

my fave part is the bass drone at the end (don't get me wrong, the song is a total belter)

the whole album is so crisp and sharp (which for once i really think works .. ), and then at the very end they drop this almighty bass drone at the end as if to say, "yeah, we know .. "

f*ckin' love this album ..

OK on sober listen "The Light Behind Your Eyes" is just too broad/soppy for me. Just a step too far into saccharine. On the other hand "Gun" remains ludicrously catchy, though I imagine they'd be in heaps of trouble had it been a single rather than a c-side.
