Surprised by my dislike for this EP - really liked Meanderthal, but this seems pointless and drab.

there's this piercing sound in "Out Again" and pretty much every time I heard it today I had to take off my headphones because I thought some alarm was going off
― markers, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 23:54 (2 years ago) Permalink
oohhhhh shhittttt it's 7:54 PM, clearly my alarm must be going off!
Didn't find this today, will have to try again later this week. Damn me and my physical media demanding ways.

This thing is great, love it from front-to-back. Could do without seeing the Foo Fighters pop up in nearly every Torche discussion though. Sure, there was a time when that kinda fit, but I don't hear anything on this one that sounds even remotely like them. Not calling anyone in this thread out solely, I've also seen this in quite a few reviews of this.

i really like the long jam at the end of "out again." am i wrong, or is this as blissed out and joyful as torche has ever been?
― mte, Thursday, 23 September 2010 18:46 (2 years ago) Permalink
well see i think it does sound a lot like the foo fighters and i've never even really read anything about these guys it just struck me that way.
― my balls and my nerds (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 23 September 2010 19:24 (2 years ago) Permalink
also the foo fighters are a pretty good band at the end of the day

― markers, Thursday, 23 September 2010 19:31 (2 years ago) Permalink
i like torche, a lot, but they sucked live last night. like, a whole set of thudding muddy sludge instead of the pop stuff. homeboy has never been great at the straight up thud and anyway this is new orleans and we have more muddy sludge than we know what to do with.
(kylesa were boring/pleasant as usual)
― adam, Thursday, 23 September 2010 21:00 (2 years ago) Permalink
i know people are big on floor or cavity or whatever but the best floor song is "downed star" which is basically a downtuned hum song.
new ep is really good though, wish they'd played some of that stuff.
― adam, Thursday, 23 September 2010 21:05 (2 years ago) Permalink
Floor rule (as did Cavity)
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 23 September 2010 21:06 (2 years ago) Permalink
Man, Torche ruled live when I saw them open for Boris. Very fun set.
I kinda like the Foo Fighters too, at least many of their singles, but I look for completely different things from each band. I won't hate on anyone for hearing a similarity, but "sounds like a sludgier Foo Fighters" has become sort of a lazy shorthand for Torche at this point.

i like that torche song markers posted. it doesn't seem especially "metal," tho. more like just heavy rock.
― Daniel, Esq., Friday, 8 October 2010 02:38 (2 years ago) Permalink
listen to meanderthal right now
― call all destroyer, Friday, 8 October 2010 02:41 (2 years ago) Permalink
yeah? what little i recall about the meanderthal samples suggested that it was more "metal" than the new one. i'll check it out now.
― Daniel, Esq., Friday, 8 October 2010 02:43 (2 years ago) Permalink
the new one has more straightup melodic stuff but meanderthal has the better songs overall. i guess just listen to both. but the song markers posted is VERY reminiscent of "across the shields" which is one of the best two meanderthal songs.

Harmonicraft has become my go-to headphone record while working out at the gym. My gym is on the 2nd floor of a building across the street from a beach and has floor-to-ceiling windows that look out at the ocean.
This evening while on the cardio machine, with the sun setting and my heart rate way up, just as the chorus of "Kicking" dropped i saw a Humpback Whale breach and splash down in to the shimmering water. It was awesome.
