I Love (Real) Football

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 20 September 2010 00:28 (thirteen years ago) link

My biggest fear would be that ILF would ghettoise football talk a bit and there would be reduced participation leading to every thread turning into stale banter between the same four or five people.

― Matt DC, Sunday, September 19, 2010 6:31 PM (1 hour ago)

no this is a good thing - by ghettoizing the topic you draw the real heads in and provide a disincentive for people who don't know what they're talking about - this leads to better discussion and way better/funnier threads

it would obviously have to be called i love soccer, that's a given

I would love there to be an "I Love Football" board so I can banish all football threads to the same limbo that Cricket, NFL, basketball, bicycles, videogames and other people's children languish in. I think this would be a brilliant move.

The only slight caveat I have is that the problem is, even though unfollowed boards are bannished from Site New Answers, they still turn up on Blog View. This isn't really a problem with NFL and baseball threads as they don't tend to be active at the time I'm at work and reading blog view, but if there are suddenly 500 football threads in Blog View, that would be irritating.

However, I think it would be a minor request to make site Blog View mirror the Site New Answers filter? That would make everything just perfect. Obviously, if that's a massive programming hassle, then never mind. But it would be nice.

^ maybe that will do it.

ledge, Monday, 20 September 2010 09:36 (thirteen years ago) link

I still have no idea why anyone would want to use Blog View.

Matt DC, Monday, 20 September 2010 09:46 (thirteen years ago) link

It means that you can keep an eye on threads you're not actively following without having to click on them and get that annoying little hollow bullet you can't reset. Also it gives you an idea if threads whose title is confusing or misleading are actually about something you want to read, or if a previously boring thread has mutated into something interesting.

Mostly, it just enables you to look at a whole series of recently updated threads and see what's going on, without clicking every single thread and reading them.

Hence, it's really good for work, when you want a quick hit of "what's going on in ILX" in a short enough capsule to do before the next chunk of work.

Karen D. Tregaskin, Monday, 20 September 2010 09:51 (thirteen years ago) link

i don't care about where football is on ilx, but a real-world equivalent of a sub-board for it would be MUCH APPRECIATED

just do more football threads on ile in you want

the difference w/ ilg for instance is that there are loads of threads for games in development that might occasionally or sporadically get new posts, whereas football threads are either for a season or just random

FUCK NO. ILE already has more than enough football threads. It's just about tolerable when it's one rolling thread but if there were half a dozen in new answers, it would be really annoying and intrusive. Like when New Answers gets swamped by 16 different THE ILX TOURNAMENT OF CHEESE or whatever threads all at once.

Karen D. Tregaskin, Monday, 20 September 2010 11:59 (thirteen years ago) link

well it's one or the other tbh, more on ILE or a dedicated board.
