i've never really dug that deep into the multivolume "Get Back Session" bootlegs. Don't knwo if I want to. I've got a bunch of Beatles bootlegs, and while they're all interesting for sure, I don't know if they have anything that's super-essential. Maybe the White Album acoustic things. Thos Sgt. Pepper multitracks are REALLY interesting, but it's not the kind of thing I'm going to listen to a ton.

RE: The Multitracks. Only after hearing them did I understand all the "Ringo can't really sing, we had to help him out" talk in the Anthology. Isolated it's a really weak vocal part, which I did not expect from how good the finished track sounds.

I hate that glyn johns get back mix; I'm probably alone in thinking that Spector really did the definitive and best work on that material (yes even the orchestras and choirs).

favorite bootlegs are, dully, the strawberry fields demos/early takes and the kinfaun demos.

Besides the already cited White Album demos and Strawberry Fields boots, I really like the re-worked River Rhine series. Cleaned up (or defiled, your opinion may very) and culled from the exhaustive "Get Back Sessions", it makes it seem that they were having fun.

I loaded down that 19-minute 'Think for Youself' tape. The real treat is the trot through 'I Want You' that came with it. Good bass obviously, but Ringo's drumming is pretty damn fine - I'm looking forward to hearing him on those remasters, should they ever happen

Interesting idea: that some people have remixed tracks where the multitracks have been released.

Haven't played it yet, will have to see...

Being a huge Beatles nerd I am foaming at the mouth just thinking about it. It's pretty cool, an early version of White Album "Revolution 1" that goes into a long freak-out section which was later lopped off and then overdubbed to comprise "Revolution 9". Here it's just the same groove, a 2-chord groove with John pulling out all the stops sounding batshit insane, some silly backing vocals fading in and out, and a synth drone (tape-loop of trumpets from the end of Strawberry Fields?). Apple is LOSING OUT.

I hope it makes the rounds and gets blogged about and Apple takes notice and says "Oh shit, wait, we have TONS of weird Beatles stuff you guys had no idea about" and then decides to ACTUALLY RELEASE SOME NEW BEATLES MUSIC.

they played the most frustratingly short fragment of this version on that 30th anniversary radio special (i.e. the track I was referring to upthread as 'Revolution / Revolution #9') and I've always been astounded the full length version wasn't available, thank you so much for posting this, it is everything I love the most about the Beatles

and this is actually yet another different mix than the one from that radio special, much more finished sounding -- so there's at least one other rough mix of this earlier version out there

(the mix from the radio special had the horn section from the album version -- this one seems to have been mixed before those horns were tracked)

This is how I always felt about "What's The New Mary Jane," which is maybe not as substantial...but I feel like it would have worked just fine on the White Album for exactly these reasons.

That weird droning sound that at first I thought was a synth and then I thought was trumpets is, according to the Lewisohn book "Complete Recording Sessions", a tape loop of all four Beatles singing. Weird!

But two tape loops made for dropping into the recording of 'Revolution 1' never actually made it and remain on the original tape, unused. One was of all four Beatles singing, at length, "Aaaaaaaaah", very high register. The second was made from a rather manic guitar phrase, played high up on the fretboard. A rough mono remix of take 20 was made and was taken away on a plastic spool by John Lennon at the end of the session. (Lewisohn, 136)

I've never cared much for the different versions of revolution 1 or 9 but the bigozine one is brilliant !
I love how it starts from the normal song and slowly, goes into the final transe (the "mama papa" at the end are wonderful).

Its in the NME, apparently, who are suggesting it is fake, which is funny cos there is a shitty casette of Yoko Ono talking over this very version while they are mixing it in the control room. No way on earth this is fake.

yeah i've heard the Yoko thing -- it was always irritating that she was blabbering on over the jam. And I'm not a Yoko hater or anything. Just wanted to hear the Beatles playing .... and now we can! :D

Wow. Sounds pretty much like I imagined it, but to hear the "Revolution 9" sound effects in a song context is jarring.

"Revolution 9" literally traumatized me as a child. It feels important to listen to, therefore, while hearing "Carnival of Light" or the 25-minute "Helter Skelter" with John on vocals would be "somewhat interesting" at best.

I'd love for Apple to put this out as a legit release. :)

still think that "Revolution take 20" outtake is one of the better Beatles unreleased kinda things I've ever heard. has it been confirmed as the genuine article? some people (can't quite remember who) were naysaying when it emerged.

I think now my favorite is the first take of "Good Night" with John Lennon singing instead of Ringo.

My personal holy grail is still that hour long reel(s?) of studio chat and oddities that Lewisohn said was compiled during the white album sessions and taken home by Paul...I think you hear bits of it on the anthology dvd in the white album part. would have made a great extra on the white album remaster (rargh!)

so, I've just listened to the songs on your link and in fact, it's not the version of revolution I was talking about.
The one I had was the one where it's starts roughly like rev1 and by the end it turns into a kind of trans with sound collages like on rev9 with some extra beatles singing parts going "mama papa"... it was around 10min long.

I recently got a 2 dvd set called "Get Back" that's pretty awesome. Someone took the time to sync audio that's been circulating for years with matching footage of the guys in the studio recording Abbey Road/Let It Be stuff, hanging out in the control room, jamming in a raucous Velvets-y stylee with Yoko on vocals, etc. Great viewing.

that's definitely this one then, and it *is* marked take 20. I thought that this take was the basis for 'Revolution 9' and was faded in and out with the other stuff, but I might have got that wrong - it doesn't seem to have the rawer 'Awll-rright's on this take. It definitely uses the same feedback loop in the second half.

Went back to read in Lewisohn about the White Album outtakes iago g.'s mentioned above. I guess it goes by the name "Beatles Chat" but he doesn't explain much about it other than describing a few items included.

I did come across mention of a 6-track original version of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" (completely different performance from the final version) featuring backwards guitar and organ and a more subdued Harrison lead vocal. Would love to hear that!

Sorry, Adam, I should have been more specific about its contents--it is first mentioned on page 12 of Lewisohn's The Beatles Recording Sessions, and described as "three tapes of out-takes and studio chatter [...] compiled at the Beatles' request" and then there are a few mentions throughout the book of the kinds of things on there. For instance, ML states that John runs through the original expletive-laden Sexy Sadie when it was still called Maharishi

Hasn't been bootlegged, just I've kind of reached the point where my collection of studio outtakes is nearing saturation point and I'm also reading "Recording Sessions" for the first time ever so whenever I come across something that sounds nice I make a note of it and hope it eventually leaks. It's fun to dream, and besides, we recently got that 11-minute long "Revolution" so anything is possible now...

"Good Night" hasn't leaked but damn, that would be a wonderful listen! Also supposedly one of those really long "Helter Skelter" jams features Lennon on lead vocals...

There was an extended version of the pre-dubbed 'I am the Walrus' on a 'Miscellaneous Tracks' bootleg posted a few months ago (good cover photo - in the hollyhocks at St Pancras Old Church) which is well well seeking out.

The bass and drums is great, especially in the last 45 seconds or so.

Kinfauns demos are amazing, they sound like they're all having fun. maybe for the last time, as it all seemed to go downhill soon as they got into the actual studio.
